It seems to happen every year at one of the majors. One old guy makes it to the top of the leaderboard after one round and sometimes he'll even take it to the weekend. But then he collapses either on Saturday or Sunday, and they don't factor in to the championship in the end. And eventually, their effort is forgotten as few people remember thier backstory of that major.
That will not be the case for Tom Watson.
