Mike D'Antoni's dream of having Steve Nash or Jason Kidd run his offense in New York ended abruptly this month when both point guards re-signed with their respective teams.
D'Antoni's bailout plan, however, is not all bad.
Free agent Andre Miller, who remains unsigned, met with Knicks president Donnie Walsh Monday at the team's training facility in Greenburgh. According to a Knicks source, the meeting came one day after Miller had a brief face-to-face meeting with D'Antoni in Las Vegas.
The Knicks can only offer Miller their mid-level exception, worth approximately $5.8 million, and the veteran point guard is looking for a contract that will pay him close to $8 million annually. The Knicks could come close to Miller's asking price if they were to work out a sign-and-trade with Philadelphia. That deal would likely have to include Chris Duhon.
Miller's agent, Andy Miller, did not return phone calls yesterday. The two were in Las Vegas last week for a meeting with officials from the Portland Trail Blazers, who have an advantage over the Knicks because they are under the salary cap and can sign Miller to more money without getting him via a trade. However, the Sixers would be open to a sign-and-trade if Portland were willing to move incumbent starting point guard Steve Blake.
Like the Knicks, the Blazers have come up empty thus far in the free agent market. Hedo Turkoglu reneged on a handshake deal and instead signed with Toronto. Portland then signed Paul Millsap to an offer sheet only to have it matched by the Utah Jazz.
The Knicks began the July recruiting period by meeting with Kidd but he elected to remain in Dallas because the club was willing to pay him $7 million more than the Knicks. And although the Knicks outbid Phoenix for Grant Hill, the veteran small forward decided to re-sign with the Suns.
Then Monday, Nash and the Suns agreed to a two-year, $22 million extension.
If the Knicks can't finalize a deal for Miller, their other option is Milwaukee restricted free agent Ramon Sessions. The Knicks had conversations with Sessions' representative yesterday but no formal offer was made.

Update: The possibility of Duhon heading to Philadelphia seems more likely after Andre Miller met with the Knicks Monday, according to the New York Daily News.
Recommendation: The Knicks didn’t make an offer to Miller, but the meeting between the two sides implies that the likelihood of a sign-and-trade involving Duhon is quite plausible.
