View Full Version : Now that Shaq and Yao are gone.............

Now that Shaq is in the East and Yao will miss the 2010 season, who's the best center in the West? Who's going to be in the allstar game?

Discuss.

Al Jefferson or Pau.

If Duncan is a Center, it's Duncan.

Otherwise, it's Jefferson, with Gasol a close second.

Bynum could certainly be this year, especially if he stays healthy and if LO does not re-sign.

Dime says Bynum.

With the departure of Shaq to the East and Yao possibly injured for all of next season... the starting center position is Bynum’s for the taking.

I'll lol when Bynum gets voted as the starting Center for the all star game while averaging like 11 points and 7 rebounds. You know Big Al will probably deserve it but he won't get the votes cause his team will suck and nobody will ever see him.

Bynum can be better than Al imo. He has the length and athleticism to be an elite defender. His defense >>>> Jefferrson's.

Jeff has a superior low post game, but Bynum is no slouch.

Idk why you're automatically assuming Yao won't get voted in just cause he won't play the entire season.........the people who voted for Yi Jian Lian over Chris Bosh last year have something to say about that.

I agree but if we're just talking 2010 all star game and all star games in general stats mean a lot and Bynum is the fifth option on the Lakers if Lamar comes back. He won't get anywhere close to enough PT and touches to put up all star numbers. Big Al is the best player on his team and can shoot whenever he wants, he'll look a lot better on paper. Oh yeah, and Bynum has glass knees so who knows how long he'll be around until he goes down again.

DPG21920
07-21-2009, 11:44 PM
Well that is why I said if LO does not re-sign. But, if he plays like he did before he went down, he was putting up crazy stats with LO, Kobe and Pau on the team.

Why is everyone assuming Amare is gonna be at center? He played PF all of last season and the rumblings are Robin "I putt from the rough" Lopez will be starting at center.

Amare should play SF. Taylor Griffin should lock down the PF position.

07-22-2009, 12:32 AM
If Duncan cant get in as C because hes a PF, why would Pau make it as a C when he also plays PF?

Jefferson is clearly the best C left, but i dont think he will be voted in. probably Bynum or some one non deserving from a big market.

The difference between Jefferson's offensive game and Bynum's offensive game, is just as big a difference as you make out their Defense is.

Bynum has a nice hook shoot, but you cant really compare that with Jefferson's full repetoire.

Besides, Al isnt worthless defensively, he blocks and contests plenty of shots. In fact he was at 1.7 BPG to Bynum's 1.8 BPG. And hes also a better rebounder, on offense and defense, and probably most importantly he fouls at a much lower rate than Bynum.

Bynum is a better defender, but were not comparing 2003 Ben Wallace to Drew Gooden here.

He still needs to work on his defense obviously,

That is a sorry collection of Centers. No way Bynum deserves mention. He flat out sucks offensively. I'd have to give the nod to Jefferson. After that it's a tossup in total suckage.

Duncan and Stoudamire are PF's.

1. Al Jefferson
2. Andrew Bynum
3. Andris Biedrins
4. Chris Kaman
5. Marcus Camby

The West definitely looks thin with Shaq gone and Yao being out. Jefferson is a terrific player and he should be a top candidate for the ASG. However, playing for the Wolves makes it easy to overlook him.

Bynum has to stay healthy and get back to his old form, then he should be the top candidate.

If Jefferson and Bynum stay healthy they should be in as Starter and backup.

Kaman, Camby and Biedrins have a slight chance and if either Jefferson or Bynum get injured one of them will be there. But it's hard to tell which one.

Jefferson? Al Jefferson? Isn't he a bona fide PF?

+1 to the Pau/Duncan as center comments. I thought Bynum was the C on the Lakers and *insert random scrub* was the center of the Spurs...

IMHO, Mehmet Okur is probably the best pure center in the West right now, unless someone else decides to have a career year.

Depends on your definition of a 'pure' center.

Okur strikes me more as a 7-foot PF, myself.

Jefferson is a Center-Forward, and was balloted as a Center last year, as that is generally what he has been playing with the Wolves.

Then again, he also finished behind Bynum, Okur, Oden, and Biedrins, despite a pretty solid year.

Mehmet Okur (Utah) 437,106
Greg Oden (Por) 359,318
Andris Biedrins (GS) 357,984
Al Jefferson (Minn) 310,643

I guess to me, a center is defined by his defensive position. Okur guards inside the paint, looking to block the shot and get the defensive rebound. Dirk never defends the paint, and is usually on the floor with someone who does. Despite Ben Wallace having no offensive game to speak of, he defended the paint, with someone who guarded the PF/C individually next to him. Shaq, despite his lack of defense, is taksed with 'clogging' the paint. Duncan seems to defend the paint, which is why I always considered him more of a C than a PF.

Since Yao was elected "All-Star for life" back in 2003, and he can't play in the game obviously. This leaves us with two choices: Okur or Bynum.

Al Jefferson doesn't exist, he can't even get more votes than Okur or Bynum last year.
