Jay Hieron, the former International Fight League welterweight champion has signed a multi-fight deal with Strikeforce. In his first fight, Hieron (17-4) is expected to step in for Joe Riggs to face Nick Diaz (20-7) at Strikeforce "Carano vs. Cyborg" in San Jose, Calif., on Aug. 15. The fight will likely be for the first ever Strikeforce welterweight title.

Nick Diaz was scheduled to take a pre-fight drug test tonight in order to get licensed and no showed. Caesar Gracie stated Wednesday that Diaz would appear for the test tonight in Sacramento. Neither Diaz nor Caesar showed up for the test and representatives for Diaz said Diaz was "busy training".
Because of the time required to get test results back, CSAC believes the test would have had to be taken tonight. Strikeforce was contacted and promised Diaz would appear for the test Monday. CSAC has agreed to this new date but has stated there is a good chance test results will not be back in time to license him for the show.

Nick Diaz Does Not Get License is Off Strikeforce Card; Jesse Taylor vs Jay Hieron Instead
Bill Douglas, Assistant Executive Officer of CSAC, on Saturday informed MMAWeekly.com that Diaz had not been licensed and the situation would be "a challenging process."
On Monday, Diaz's manager, Cesar Gracie, said his fighter had an informal agreement with former CSAC executive officer Armando Garcia that precluded random drug testing. Diaz, a resident of Stockton, Calif., currently holds a medical marijuana license under the state's Compassionate Use Act of 1996 and Medical Marijuana Program Act. Garcia departed the agency last November.
"They changed it without any notification," said Gracie. "No one had any time. The old guys were doing things based off of California law, and I knew California law didn't change. He's licensed... it's legal. They're own legal team came out with a ruling that said (compassionate use was allowed). Then all of a sudden they're saying we're doing drug tests, and cannabis is included, it's not just performance enhancers. To flush it out of his system, it takes 10 days, and we don't have that."

This is a tough one. He holds a legitimate medical card for it, he uses it naturally for ADHD (rather than medicating himself with pills)... but man. If you know you've got a fight coming up and they'll nail you for it, can't you lay off the stuff for two weeks? Have some self-control.

ehhh if Gina wins the few of us who actually follow women's will become massively disinterested because she's had cakewalk fights every step of the way.
If she loses, that's a huge reason to turn into her next fight, because she won't be the beautiful all dominant women's mma face she's been since day 1.

StrikeForce is in a mountain of trouble if Gina loses. She is a legit fighter but her uniqueness carries more weight than her skill. Die hards like me that want to see her fight for skill are rare. She had my attention on the first Showtime card where she had the fight of the night by a mile. Anyone remember that with the smoking dragon in the background?
She is a “camera girl” that crosses all genre’s and gives SF free publicity. Womens MMA is basically nonexistent aside from her. How many women can you or anyone else name outside her ‘book end’ weight classes???
There is simply far too many 5-2 type records in female MMA so there is little that is stable. SF has been trying to avoid dangerous fights for Gina so they wouldn’t lose their biggest free advertising golden ticket and I can’t blame them. They are in so much trouble if she loses and Scott Coker knows it. I want SF to be as successful as possible so for that reason alone I am rooting for Gina.

I totally understand where you are coming from. But I think Gina is so dropdead gorgeous, and popular, that even if she loses, the fans that follow WMMA for her are still going to watch. They'll want to see her regain her top spot. She will still be the face of the women's side of the sport, especially so in defeat. It adds for a great story IMO.
If she wins, then, exactly like you said, who else is there? I think she's won so handily that she needs a loss, that way there's DRAMA. Drama will bring in more viewers in the long term, help the sport out. If she wins, then the sport will stay as it is now, and as the spotlight inevitably drifts away from Gina, the sport will be completely nonexistent.

I'm a bit concerned that Cyborg's main focus is to destroy Gina's pretty face. I don't want that to happen, I want Gina to still be able to bite her bottom lip all seductively and shit when the camera zooms in on her at various MMA events.
That being said, I'll go ahead and put my 1-0 prediction record on the line and say Gina will use Cyborg's aggression against her, submitting her in the 3rd round. And Cyborg won't tap, she'll just stop looking angry and the ref will call it off.
So yea, if Gina gets mangled, maybe we should look into starting a facial reconstruction fund?

Pros Picks:
Erik Paulson: The fight between Gina and Cyborg will go to Gina because she is as strong as a guy. She has solid striking, and Cyborg won’t be able to bully her around like she’s used to with others. Plus, Gina is the poster girl for Strikeforce; she is the main event on a big card with great fights. She has to win.
Micah Miller: Carano -- by hotness.
Brodie Farber: I have absolutely no interest in watching women fight. I’ll be sure to tune into a different channel during that time.
Guy Mezger: Cyborg is technically a better MMA fighter and very strong, but I feel Gina is too large and strong and [has] superior striking for her. Gina can make up for not having the same ground game on sheer size and strength.
Scott Bieri: Big night for women and MMA, in general. It’s also nice to see women fighting under the unified five-minute rounds for this title bout. I think the majority of this contest is played out on the feet, with both girls having a muay Thai background. Cris Santos will come forward with her dangerous Chute Boxe style, which she has been mowing down opponents with, but it won’t work on Carano. Gina will use movement, precision striking and takedown defense to thwart Cyborg. Carano by TKO in the championship rounds.
Eddy Millis: I’m not gonna analyze this one too much. I’m worried if it gets to the ground Cyborg will have the advantage. However, with that being said, Carano is my friend, and I’m pulling for her to KO Cyborg, round one. Boot to the head.
Scott Lighty: I pick Gina to win for sure. She is an American Gladiator.
Rory Markham: It’s a toss up for me. Both are very talented. I have Gina a bit more in this one.
Pete Sell: Cyborg is a beast. I think her power could win her this fight. Carano looks more technical; she will have to out-slick Cyborg. Cyborg turns this into a brawl and wins by KO.
Jaime Fletcher: The first time I saw Gina fight was in K-1. I wasn’t familiar with her, but I thought to myself, “This chick fights like a dude.” People get it confused … like if you’re attractive, you can’t fight. Make no mistake, Carano is a fighter, has heart and has beaten everyone that has been put in front of her. On the other side, you have Cyborg, whose veins and muscle striations in her shoulders make you want to put on a long sleeve or hit some flies and take some Creatine. She has a lot of explosiveness, power muay Thai and an underrated ground game. I think the difference in this fight will be technique on the stand-up and gas tank. Santos has yet to be pushed or made uncomfortable and looked fatigued against smaller competition that offered little or no offense on the feet. Carano by TKO or submission in the second round.
Melvin Guillard: Cyborg by KO in the second.
Kevin Burns: I think this will be a great fight for the fans. I believe Cyborg will be a little more hungry, though, which will give her the edge overall.
John Hackleman: Gina [will win by] using her muay Thai skills and her natural speed, timing and power. I see Gina pulling out a victory.
Cung Le: I’m going with Gina by decision.
Dewey Cooper: This is a monumental fight for women’s MMA and all women’s sports abroad. Every lady athlete on the planet should tune in and celebrate the progress they have made in the sports world. Women’s boxing had the chance to have a fight as big with Laila Ali vs. Anne Wolfe, but it never materialized. This will be a great war between two of the best lady fighters in the world of MMA. I think Cyborg is very strong and will pose many problems for Gina early, but the striking skills of Carano should and will prevail late in the fight. I say fourth- or fifth-round KO win for Gina Carano. Her right hand is powerful and accurate and will find its mark.
Robert Drysdale: Gina by decision.
Randy Couture: I believe Gina Carano will take this fight over by the third round, using solid footwork and punching combinations to frustrate Cyborg and wear her down. I’m sure I’m a little biased, but she looks great and has had a very good camp. It should be a monumental fight for women’s MMA.
Ricardo Liborio: Carano by decision.
Jake Shields: I see it being a very close fight, with Gina being more technical and Cyborg being the stronger of the two, but I see conditioning being the deciding factor. With this being their first title fight and jumping from three- to five-minute rounds, it is gonna be a big change for both. But with Gina having a more experienced camp, I will pick her because they should be aware of this and have spent adequate time conditioning her.

“We took a lot of proactive measures to make sure didn’t happen. We were weighing the girls all week,” Coker told Cagewriter. “When Gina went to sleep last night she was right at weight (145). I was more concerned about Cyborg (she weighed in at 152 for her last Strikeforce fight). I talked to the Chute Boxe trainer and said ’she has to make weight.’ When they landed [in San Jose] she was 152. We just let her do her thing and didn’t interrupt, but we weighed them everyday.”
With this much on the line and the new relationship with Showtime, Coker said he had no choice:
“I don’t think we’ve ever been this diligent. This is a such high-profile event. This is a major fight for television, a major fight for us and a major fight for female fighting period.”

M-1 is just trying to get a piece of the MMA pie, and Fedor is their supposed ticket. Fedor has absolutely no idea what is going on with the contract talks. He's gonna spend the downside of his prime fighting nobodies and it's sad. Overeem is the only legit matchup that SF can throw his way...after that, he might as well rematch with Zulu.

Gina needs to decide what direction she wants to go in. Even after this loss, i still think she's genuinely more talented than Cris. When she had her mind set on fighting (Muay Thai) and not being a diva, she was an absolute beast. She's nowhere near the striker that she used to be, and that's very telling of where she is mentally and her lack of dedication.
If she wants a rematch she is going to have to prove it by coming back in proper form and with her mind right.

Gina has never been a beast. She's never fought anyone that was ever truly at her weight. She had to have her own special weight class, because she has a problem making weight. She isn't technically superior. Out of 10 fights, Cris "The Dude" would win 9 or probably 10. There is no "right form" or "right mind" unless she is fighting also-rans.

i have to agree. i fully believe gina can beat cyborg IF she actually trains 100% for her. gina was tiring out after the first half of the round was done. i thought it was pretty weak. if gina trained as hard as cyborg then i feel like she would win. also, why in the hell did gina give up the full mount she had? that was just stupid. she was getting some good shots and just gave it up. i dunno....i'd like to see a rematch if gina can actually get her conditioning to a semi-respectable level.

Not a bad fight although at times on both their parts it was a little sloppy. Gina is a good fighter but Cyborg is way too big and strong for her. Womens MMA is so new and thin, Gina will beat 90% of the class pretty easy but not Cyborg, she is too much..

I didn't say she had a special weight class as a kickboxer, but in MMA. Again, who did she fight with winning records, or those that were even freaking ranked? Show me these oppenents and their records. It's easy to look powerful and have technique against people who have none.

Great fight ends as first round horn sounds, Cyborg punches too much (http://sports.yahoo.com/mma/blog/cagewriter/post/Great-fight-ends-as-first-round-horn-sounds-Cyb?urn=mma,183104)
By Steve Cofield
What an atmosphere and what a one-round fight. Gina Carano and Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos slugged it out all over the cage for what seemed like the longest five-minute round in MMA history. Cyborg was slightly ahead in the round when she got the fight to the ground with less than 20 seconds left. Carano covered up and took 15 unanswered shots on her arms and to the face through her guard. When Carano wasn't moving or defending herself, referee Josh Rosenthal felt compelled to stop the fight. The crowd seemed to think he could've held off since there was just one second left in the round. Cyborg (8-1) wins the Strikeforce women's lightweight title at the 4:59 mark of the first.
Carano (7-1) was emotional in the cage as they announced the winner and handed the belt to Cyborg. It was the first loss of her career. She was more than competitive throughout, withstanding multiple flurries and attacks from Cyborg. She actually powered out of a kimura attempt with less than 45 seconds left in the round, and at times she looked like the crisper striker. But the volume coming from Cyborg was eventually too much to deal with. Cyborg delivered as a minus-170 favorite on Las Vegas betting boards.
The HP Pavilion rocked before and during the fight. There wasn't a three-second break in the action during the fight and much of the crowd was on its feet for the entire fight. It easily matched the atmosphere of any UFC or Strikeforce card featuring all male fighters.
Now the question is, can Strikeforce and women's fighting build the sport around someone who isn't a beauty queen? Whether that statement offends you or not, reality is there was a reason Carano was part of American Gladiators and did so many appearances on shows like Craig Ferguson and Jimmy Kimmel. That said, Carano is also far from finished. She proved even in a loss that she's a legitimate fighter. Maybe we see a rematch after both fighters get to test their skills against some of the other women as the sport grows.

Not only is Cyborg built like a man, she speaks no english at all. Gina was the goods, they needed her to win plain and simple..

That.
Now the question is, can Strikeforce and women's fighting build the sport around someone who isn't a beauty queen.
nope.
even in Japan where womens MMA is somewhat popular its still built on looks.

Not a bad fight, Cyborg was just too big.
Gina got rocked by that "thing". I don't ever want to see women's MMA again. That was a terrible experience.

I'm all for equality of the sexes. Even if Cyborg looks like a man she's technically a woman, Fedor vs Cyborg is the next logical step for Strikeforce if they want to compete with UFC's drawing power.
Gina needs a new camp, did she even know who she was fighting? I wasn't expecting that kind of a performance from her, maybe she would have recovered in the second round...but there wasn't a second round so it doesn't matter. >.<

I don't see why all of you are hating so much on it, it was an exciting fight.

she wasn't scared. her problem was that she wasn't in shape enough. gina is a really cute chick but her conditioning sucks for mma. i don't think she cares too much about staying in fighting condition if she gets gassed after 2 minutes.

I agree about her conditioning. But you could just look at her demeanor and facial expression coming into the cage and prior to the bell....she was nothing close to confident.

Gina's finally been pushed and defeated by the likes of someone she'd never faced before, so the way she rebounds from it will tell us more about her desire as an MMA fighter than anything we've viewed thus far.
It's one thing to excel in a sport because your natural gifts, it's quite another thing to put in the work to be the best when the talent pool isn't devoid of competition.

Old video but what I wanted to say thta women MMA is really not organised yet :)
Genius I am :)
And hopefully this fight will provide some actions that will help this sport grow.
Gina was losing this fight and seeing this fight once again I have no problems in stopping the fight by the ref. Although from the begining I wanted them to cool the pace to fight at least rounds .. :)
And man - how about having so much good positions and not taking adventage of it? Guys are on a diferent level, not ony because of a gender but really light years of experiance and ring behaviour.
All in all it was good to watch Mussasi and cyborg vs gina and then set myself to go to work.
Waiting for a news who they will come up with to fight Fedor ... :rolleyes

Cyborg vs Gina was entertaining for what it is but I really cant get into women's mma at all.
Moussasi is a beast, you could tell from the second he started walking to the ring that he was gonna dismantle Babalu. Kinda reminded me of watching Anderson before the Forrest fight. They had a "just another day at the office" swag to them.

By all accounts she was in great shape...I think she was drained because of the big punches she was eating.

With her high-profile victory over Gina Carano this past weekend, newly crowned Strikeforce 145-pound women's champion Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos will now experience scrutiny like never before.
However, that type of attention almost always leads to speculation the Brazilian striker may be using performance-enhancing drugs.
In his latest "Ask the Doc" column, MMAjunkie.com medical columnist Dr. Johnny Benjamin answers a reader's question about the topic while also cautioning why seemingly harmless speculation can have such a negative impact on the sport.

Hey Doc: It's out there so, why don't you address it? Do you think Cris "Cyborg" Santos is on steroids, growth hormone or other performance-enhancing drugs? – Anonymous
I know better, but I will give you my two cents on this subject.
I think that this question sheds light on three controversial issues in MMA: the prevalence of performance-enhancing-drug (PED) use, fighter bashing when your favorite fighter loses, and malicious or inappropriate comments directed toward female athletes.
I have absolutely no reason to believe or suspect Cris Santos of being anything other than a superb athlete, a fearless warrior, a champion and a great ambassador for MMA. She has been tested for performance-enhancing drugs in the U.S. many times, and to my knowledge, has never failed a screen.
It disappoints me when some vocal people in cyberspace hide behind a pseudonym and make malicious and baseless attacks against athletes that have never failed a screen for banned substances. These keyboard toxicologists think that they can merely look at an athlete and "know" that so-and-so is a "juicer." There is a term for that. It's called "delusions of grandeur," and medication may help.
Do I think that (for reasons that have nothing to do with Santos) it is time to start testing blood instead of urine? Absolutely.
Do I think that Santos should be ridiculed for putting in countless hours of hard work and being superbly fit? Absolutely NOT.
Fighter bashing is just weak. Your favorite fighter lost. Get over it. He or she shook hands with the victor and is not whining. But you are. How pathetic. One of the things that I love about MMA is that a good loss does not hurt a fighter.
Remember that this is MMA and not professional boxing. An MMA fighter with a 13-3 record can be a legitimate world champion or challenger – unlike boxing, where a fighter with a 13-3 record is generally viewed as garbage. For this reason, MMA fighters don't need to pad their records with tomato cans.
Many readers think that I am against women participating in combat sports. They couldn't be more wrong. I have no problem with it. I just think that currently many of the fights that I have seen are not that good. Again, it's just my opinion.
But by any reasonable standard, Santos is an excellent fighter, and Gina Carano is a good fighter. Gender has nothing to do with it.
I am appalled at the seemingly endless references to what a female athlete looks like and worse yet what sexual act some fool wants to perform on her or vice versa.
As someone who's been part of the legislative process recently, I know this and many other types of malicious commentary are the very ammunition that detractors of MMA use to wage their anti-legalization war. So, while some pitiful individuals are out there typing away spreading their filth and venom, other MMA fans should begin to realize why it is so hard to legalize MMA in some key states and countries.
And needlessly bashing a gifted and hard-working athlete such as Santos – with no proof of anything except her dominant fighting skills and a well-conditioned body – is a big reason why.

Tara's a good fighter and seems quite friendly in the interview, but I've talked to her before (not face-to-face - live fighter chat) and she seems to have a big disdain for female fans of mma. Apparently, since I don't fight or even train, I'm just some groupie looking to get laid :rolleyes
