View Full Version : Nash Reflects, Rips Gasol Trade

Having just signed a contract extension with the Suns, Steve Nash took just a few seconds to look back on the last few years.
"You know what? I enjoy life too much to look back a lot," Nash told the Arizona Republic of his five years with the Suns. "I have too much to look forward to each day, too much left to accomplish and work for. Yeah, it's a shame and it hurts, if I take a minute to stop and think about it. But I don't really have any regrets, and I look forward to continuing to improve and being part of a great environment and a great team."
As positive and forgiving as Nash sounded, he proved that he could be bitter too.
"No one gave us Pau Gasol for nothing," he added.
Nash was referring to a February 2008 trade between the Grizzlies and Lakers. Los Angeles acquired Gasol and a 2010 second round pick from Memphis for Kwame Brown, Javaris Crittenton, Aaron McKie, the rights to Marc Gasol and two future draft picks

Phoenix had their chance to trade Amare for KG and balked, and the rest is history. Boston won a championship, and Phoenix has since become a non-factor in the league. It's amazing how often GMs still think they can build teams around immature dunk machines who don't care about defense. It just doesn't work.

Team A traded an expiring contract + their 2008 and 2010 first round pick for Gasol.
Team B traded an expiring contract + their 2008 and 2010 first round pick for nothing.

When you just signed an extension with team B, don't whine about a trade team A made when it's clear team B had no interest making that trade.

If anybody knew he'd be let go for that, they would've been sending their wives and daughters over to make sure their team was the recipient.

Maybe certain teams would, but not a team that just traded a similar package for nothing.

The Grizzlies got more in return than the Bucks did for Jefferson. Trading away talent for cap space is a way of life in the NBA now. The Griz are actually in better shape now than they were two years ago, which isn't saying much, but it's still true.

Any team with Z-Bo isn't in good shape IMO, but if they don't make that stupid Z-Bo trade I agree they were in better shape.

Yeah, I don't get the Zach trade either, especially after getting three defensive minded guys in the draft in Carroll, Young, and Thabeet.

The lakers gave up Kwame Brown and Gasol, both are Starting Centers for their respective teams. What other team, if not the Lakers, gives up TWO starting centers for one power forward. Huge gamble by the Laker FO.

Players see that trade as totally lopsided and the GM who approved that trade obviously was trying to make the Lakers better.

I'm sorry but :lmao

You can't be serious, trading the biggest bust of all time and someone that wasn't even on our team at the time for the missing piece that is responsible largely for two finals appearances in two years and a ring, that move was the furthest thing from a gamble.

What a pathetic piece of shit you are. Ripping Nash for saying what everyone in the NBA believed. How dare Nash speak candidly about the Gasol trade. I'd guess you would rather have copout cliches from professional athletes. Your a typical arrogant Lakers fan who doesn't appreciate what Nash has brought to the NBA. He grew up on the westcoast of Canada and received no scholarship offers to a U.S. university. When Santa Clara finally gave him a scholarship he led them to NCAA tournament wins over Arizona and Maryland. They haven't been back since he left the school in 96. Sorry, but Nash busted his ass to get to where he is today.

While I don't completely agree, I do respect him for expressing his opinion on the trade, the Gasol trade disrupted the entire west.

they also gave up their franchise player who was paid accurately with his skillset.

You know, whats funny is that if the Gasol trade was never made - hell, if Pau Gasol never even existed - Nash STILL wouldnt have a championship. Someone else would have won the title but it wouldnt have been Phx.

I dont get why he's still talking about it. He's played with like a half dozen allstars in his career, multiple ones on the same team, and come away with nothing to show for it.

1) Nash fans will say that he had the right to stab Shaq in the back because Shaq couldn't guard two players at once when Nash was too lazy to guard anyone.

2) Nash fans, as well as Nash himself, like to ignore the fact Nash went to Kerr and told him to trade Marion for Shaq because he said he couldn't deal with Marion anymore (which I actually agree with him on, but that's beside the point).

Yeah, in hindsight. But at the time Gasol was a malingerer in Memphis, he'd stand out there and shoot 20 footers one after another. He was no ringer. Christ, they beat him to death in the Finals last year and he ran and cried to the refs. It was humiliating.

Somebody got to him in the offseason though and straightened him out. He was a different player this year. Gone (mostly) was the Sacramento Style Funk & Junk that he'd always played with in Memphis. He started looking eye, kept his mouth shut more and just soldiered.
