In Today's "The BS Report" with Bill Simmons, he had Stein and Bucher on with him to debate offseason talks.
A few of the things have been talked about with Simmons offseason recap... such as that all the title teams got worse this summer, except the San Antonio Spurs... the 2004 All Stars (Mavs)... and different things from Antoine Walker, Hedo, Kidd, Gortat and other moves this summer...
But in the twenty something minute of podcast part 2 they talk about who will win the title this year (assuming odom is going to Miami)... Stein went first and said i think the San Antonio Spurs, Simmons said he feels he has to agree. And Bucher said since you two picked the Spurs, I'll go with the Celtics... but said it as if I don't want to go with the flow, but I'd pick the Spurs if you hadn't.

BS is a great writer. His draft diaries are spot on.
Would be a great bit if someone gave him a player personnel advisor role. Would be hilarious.

Completely agree, I love how he talks to the other guys like they are kids... I feel thats me when I talk to my Mav fans up here in Dallas. Love his articles and hearing him throw together different scenarios

Anybody mind posting the summer rankings next to the BS report on the ESPN's NBA page?

well, he thinks the Lakers messed up by letting Ariza go, so I understand why Lakerfan is bitter...you better hope he was wrong.
He also things getting Crazy ROn for 5 years guaranteed was stupid.
Other than that, he thinks if they get Odom, they are champions, so what do you care?

in 2 hours, they spoke 3 minuets about the spurs, and both times pretty much in passing.
Sometimes simmons is funny, sometimes he is an idiot, like his non understanding of the fact there there was no year zero, and the stupid "lebron can win any olympic event if he trained for 6 months", he is a lebron dick sucker just like the rest of espn. They build the guy up as a 6'9'' 285 pound beast that can lift elephants above his head. when in fact he is 240 and 6'7''

He's shitting on us getting Marion for Jerry Stackhouse's corpse???!!!?? WTF?
What's wrong with that? Nobody is popping open champagne. There's still work to do to overcome the Lakers. But we're a much better team.

I think hes referring to the fact that people (Rick Bucher) think Marion will be that 22-12-2 guy he was in the gimmick Suns system. Against the Spurs and Lakers, hes more likely to be the guy we saw on the Heat and Raptors. Solid, maybe 13-8, but not All-Star level like before.

I can't believe I listened to these idiots talk that long. Bucher is such an annoying fuck-half the time he just talks out of his ass-especially when he was talking about david lee and just talking out of his ass and simmons called him out and said you haven't seen the knicks play in 4 years...
Stein is alright and Simmons I like (though he has obvious biases). But yea don't listen to it, they all said the spurs to win next year if odom is moved to heat. And then talked about random teams (dallas/marion a lot, orlando), players (turk, david lee, villanueva). They definitely talked the most about the lakers and how they don't understand how they are not sticking with the players they had last year. Idiot bucher went on and on about letting ariza go for artest, and they all just didn't know why buss would throw down a little extra for odom.
I don't necessarily agree about the ariza/artest swap because that's really a wait and see situation-there's positives and negatives about both players. As for Odom I agree I think they go from a clear favorite with odom back to in a very tough competition for the ring next year. I think buss should throw a little more out there for odom for the advantage he gives for a 'chip. All i got out of it though was a reassurance that i hate bucher.

Yeah I am tempted to lay some money down on the Spurs right now. I wonder what the odds will change or if they will if Odom isn't resigned. I like our chances either way though

Bucher's analysis on David Lee was downright hilarious/pathetic.
I feel that there are people on message boards who would make much better employees at ESPN than who they have now

In part 1, did someone just say that the '05 spurs team was the worst spurs team?? what???

Fixed and true.
And, in terms of the NBA, Simmons always shits on the Lakers and Pistons no matter what.
Mainly because they have beaten his bandwagon Celtics on more than one occassion.
The Celtics are 9-2 against the Lakers in the playoffs. Why would he hate the Lakers for beating his Celtics on more than one occasion (see twice) when the Celtics have beaten the Lakers 9 times?
About the only thing the Lakers haven't been able to do is best the Celtics head-to-head. In 11 meetings against Boston in the Finals, L.A. has prevailed just twice -- both coming with Magic and Kareem's teams under Pat Riley in the 1980s.

Simmons was on record as saying that the Pacers were probably the best team in the NBA prior to the brawl.
He has a case in the fact that Parker still wasn't quite prime time (compared to 2007). However, the case falls apart when you consider Gino was at his absolute best and Duncan dominated the Wallaces (combined) in the Spurs 4 wins.
Edit: He's also on record as saying that the 2006 Spurs probably beat the Heat if they get past the Mavs.

the 2004-05 Pacers did have a lot of talent and they were ridiculously deep, but it still is quite a reach to think that this team might ever have had a chance to win the title. if the brawl doesn't happen, a dozen other incidents might happen till play offs. a totally out of control and megalomaniac Artest ("I should be the MVP"), a semi criminal head case like Tinsley, camp followers like Sjax and JO..... it takes more than a 39 years old Reggie Miller to control this locker room.
and about the 2005 Spurs: IMO they were by far the best Spurs championship team, no matter if Tony not yet was on top of his game. alongside the mentioned Tim and Manu at their best, they had Bruce, who was better than ever and without a doubt the best defender in the NBA and Horry had his last trade mark PO run. if Tony would have been as good as he is now, the Spurs don't need 7 games against the Pistons. (they were very good either in these days and, not to forget, the defending champs)

It's really a moot point.
If you listen to the podcast, Stein and Simmons pick the Spurs on the assumption Odom will not return to the Lakers.
Lots of things happen over the course of the season, trades are made, people get hurt. Picking a winner in July never made sense to me.
I'm excited about the season but I've seen enough basketball to realize that winning a title is a marathon, not a 50 meter dash.
I enjoyed the David Lee/Shawn Marion arguments between Buch and Simmons.
