Free agent Lamar Odom (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3327/)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/players/3327/news) plans to return to the champion Los Angeles Lakers (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/lal/) with a four-year contract, according to a report on ESPN.
The deal reportedly would be worth as much as $33 million, including the Lakers' option on the fourth year of the deal.
Odom, 29, averaged 11.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 2.6 assists for Los Angeles last season. He had also been considering rejoining the Miami Heat (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/teams/mia/), for whom he played during the 2003-04 season before joining the Lakers.

Wait a minute.

Shelly Smith of ESPN was on the local radio out here and she said that Portland came into it late and offered a 5/40 million dollar deal. Is that even possible?????

Dang.

The only reason I don't like it is because the Lakers didn't need to get stronger than last season. They were already ahead of the pack as it was. With Odom and Artest...they arguably did.

Time to play the games, fellas. Bring it on.

LA's Offer
Year 1: $7,127,430
Year 2: $7,875,810
Year 3: $8,624,190
Year 4: $9,372,570 (team option)
Total: $33,000,000

Based on 10.5% raises. However, only $23,627,430 is guaranteed

Miami's Offer (full MLE)
Year 1: $5,854,000
Year 2: $6,322,320
Year 3: $6,790,640
Year 4: $7,258,960
Year 5: $7,727,280
Total: $33,953,200

Based on 8% raises. If Odom makes more than $953,200 in 2013-2014, the Lakers' deal is better. He'll be 34, and there's no telling what he'll have left in the tank then.

I'm kind of puzzled, though. The Lakers could conceivably cut him loose after three years, and he'll be 33 with limited market value by then. Combined with the taxes that will cost him ~$660K, and Miami's offer is bigger by ~$1.2M. A close decision, and I'm not surprised that he stayed in LA (they're a much better team), but it's much closer than I thought it would be.

Kudos to Kupchak, et al, because they saved quite a bit of money.

If the stories are true, Odom went from rejecting both 3 yrs/$30M and 4 yrs/$36M to turning down 3 yrs/$27M, and finally accepting what is basically 3 yrs/$24M. I don't see any way that the Lakers will actually pay that 4th year.

according to ESPN, odom gets guaranteed $27 million because the fourth year will have a buyout of $2 million. either way, he still got 3yrs/$27 million, which according to the same article was the lakers' original offer.

Great news. The Lakers are clearly the team to beat now, puts pressure off the Spurs as all the pressure is on the Lakers now to repeat with that stacked lineup. If healthy the Spurs can give them a huge fight in the playoffs.

Pressure has never been an obstacle for San Antonio. And the pressure was squarely on LA last year to win and they did. Pressure has nothing to do with where these two teams will end up at seasons conclusion next year, the best team will win and thats that.

Did you fall into a coma in April and woke up today staring at the news on TV?
So you think a healthy Manu and TD won't make a difference? Dice and RJ won't mean shit? rebounding nut called Blair wont' help? Have you looked at the Lakers bench lately? they are about as weak as your faith.. The Lakers looked "good" last year because they played a weak ass Jazz team, a Rockets team w/out 2 of their best players and a Denver team that was just happy to be there and folded. Then they played a Magic team who was also just happy to be there and folded..

You don't think our bigs of TD, Dice, Ratliff, and Ian compare to their bigs? A few pieces? you can only have so many players on a team, who would you suggest? Bonner is another reason we were weak last year, he's a Steve Kerr type of player in a big mans' body.. We are all hoping that Finley doesn't get many minutes next year anyway.. So you think the Lakers bench is stacked? We are gonna have a much better Spurs squad out there this year. I still don't know why you aren't giving us a chance next year.. I sure as hell hope you don't think the Mavs are better than us with your reasoning..

I'll echo all the basketball fans here; I'm happy. Let's beat the Lakers at full strength. Let's let the Lakers be media favorites all season long. Let's go into the playoffs as the underdog and beat the ever-loving crap out of absolutely everybody. I'm glad the Lakers signed Odom. Clearly, Odom was trying to artificially create leverage where it didn't exist. The logical response when you get called out on it, is to save face and move on; instead Odom tucked his tail between his legs and took a bad deal.

In the state of California:

If your income range is $1,000,001 and over, your tax rate on every dollar of income earned is 10.3%.

It's probably a safe bet to say the Lakers won't pick up that 4th year option....making this decision clearly a bad financial decision; which isn't to say he didn't already know this fact.

A Night of Ugh

Lamar Odom has resigned with the Lakers. This solidifies the Lakers as prohibitive favorites to win the title. But I’m not worried. The Spurs have a realistic shot at reclaiming the crown. They’ll have to fire on all cylinders and catch a couple breaks, though. Odom is a difficult match up for the Spurs.

But hear this: don’t sweat it. The Spurs are pretty damn smart at what they do; from where I sit, they’ve already got this covered. If the sick with talent Lakers prove one player too much for the Spurs, San Antonio can piece together a nice package of expiring contracts in January or February in return for an impact player on a salary dump. Matt Bonner, Mike Finley, and Roger Mason Jr. can put the Spurs within striking distance of 10-12 million dollar player. The contracts of Malik Hairston, Marcus Williams, Marcus Haislip and Theo Ratliff are all movable as well. In addition to their expirings, they could sweeten any potential deal with draft picks and/or the rights to Tiago Splitter. San Antonio has held a trump card back in the form of expiring contracts.

As we move into the season, remember that the Spurs have left themselves some wiggle room to gear up for the Lakers.

Elsewhere, Tony Parker’s recently injured ankle is enough of a concern to the Spurs that they’ve brought him back to San Antonio for tests. Parker and the French press are playing the injury off as minor, and painting a picture of an unnecessarily cautious Spurs front office. But can you blame the front office for erring on the side of caution? Last season ended before it began when Manu Ginobili injured his ankle during international play.

If Parker’s injury is even remotely serious, he needs to shut himself down. I don’t begrudge guys for playing for their countries. In fact, I love Parker’s leadership as it relates to his national team and aspirations with ASVEL. In a vacuum I not only want Parker to play for his national team, I’ll promise to cheer for him all along the way. Ultimately, such commitments are good for the player and good for basketball. But at some point his debt to country must be counter balanced against an obligation to his employer and, more importantly, teammates. Or, to his teammates and, more importantly, employer. It’s a fine line that divides one form of loyalty from another. I’d say more, but I’m all awash in ambivalence. And I’m more than a little anxious to hear about the test results.

If you’re like me, then your feelings about San Antonio players playing in international competition race around like the hormones of a pubescent teen. My guess is that Peter Holt would like to pay tax bills while watching Tony Parker make baskets rather than watching him make eyes at Eva from a seat behind the bench. But it’s difficult for me to fully appreciate the value that playing for one’s country has to internationals. American fans have a difficult time wrapping their mind around the fact that international players value gold medals more than gold trophies.

A thread over at SpursTalk touches on this. If you make your way over, notice the difference of opinion between American and French posters. The Americans approach this question from a best-for-the-team, protect-your-assets standpoint. The French posters see the Spurs’ (over?)zealous concern for Parker as potentially damaging to his relationship with the franchise. What if Parker is really okay and San Antonio’s doctors come to the same conclusions as the French doctors? If France struggles without Parker and fails to qualify for play in September, will Parker hold a grudge against San Antonio for sabotaging the aspirations of his national team?

It’s a complicated debate. It’s complicated by the fact that neither position is arguing something as simple as right and wrong.

This is why I hate the youth of Laker fans and switched. They want to trade these 2 guys and expect to get LeBron in return. They see no problem in getting Gasol for nothing and didnt earn the title. It was given. Now they will say "Lets trade our 2nd round pick for Durant"...and fully expect it to happen and if it doesnt, its because Durant and the Thunder are morons for not bowing to the Lakers.

In the interest of being fair, how is that not like RJ for the Spurs? He may not be Gasol-caliber, but he could potentially make as much difference on his team. All the Bucks still have from that trade is a veteran Kurt Thomas (plus cap space, same as Grizz). Marc Gasol is better for Memphis than KT is for the Bucks. But Gasol made the Lakers into a title contenders much like JR has for the Spurs.

The real difference? The Bucks originally got three name players, so it seems like the two trades don't compare. But if the Spurs end the season in a win, us fans will be celebrating in much the same way: "Thanks Bucks, we couldn't have done it without you."

If it was such a given... then why couldn't the Lakers win the year before? If its such a given, then why are there so many threads talking about the 6 teams that could win it all? How is trading away washed up players that get waived for an all star any more tollerable than trading a rookie with potential and draft picks for an all star? Ohh, if it's the Lakers on the other end.

Bump.

Here are the official contract numbers for Odom:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/truehoop/0-43-3/Lamar-Odom-s-Contract-Numbers.html

The official contract numbers on Lamar Odom are in.

Nothing drastically different from what we anticipated Thursday when the Lakers and Odom finally reached an agreement after a month of oft-testy negotiations, but still worth passing along in the name of specificity.

The overall worth of the contract based on numbers that were circulated throughout the league Monday is $32.8 million over four years, with the Lakers holding a team option in Year 4.

Odom will earn $7,500,000 this coming season, $8,200,000 in 2010-11,
$8,900,000 in 2011-12 and then $8,200,000 in the non-guaranteed fourth year if the Lakers pick up their team option.

So that's $24.6 million guaranteed over the first three years. If the Lakers decline their option, they must pay out a $2.4 million buyout before the fourth season to get Odom to $27 million guaranteed, matching the value of the original three-year offer that the Lakers pulled off the table in mid-July.

$8,200,000 in the non-guaranteed fourth year if the Lakers pick up their team option.... If the Lakers decline their option, they must pay out a $2.4 million buyout before the fourth season

As a side note, that's a pretty nice trade chip the Lakers will have after the 2011-12 season. Similar value to Bowen+Oberto, with significantly less guaranteed.
