And it said that, "On paper, even without Kobe Bryant, the Lakers are a top 5 team in the West."

Without Kobe they are probably an 8th seed at best.

Seeds 5-7 are in reach without Kobe, although only assuming Phil is still there.
They need to strengthen their bench though at the SG position. Without Kobe there's only Vujacic and although he might be borderline solid as a starter, he would do more harm to the franchise.
