wireless connection help - XP

got a new router, a d-link 655. I love it so far. Connected two wired machines, then setup two Vista laptops for wireless. However, I can't get an XP laptop to connect.

I'm a router noob, but this router seems pretty easy to set up. I made a main ssid for my wired desktop and my vista laptop. I also set up a guest ssid for anyone else.

I select the wireless network on the xp laptop, but I don't know what to put anywhere else.
When I setup the Guest account on the router, it asked for a passphrase. I made one. On my wife's vista laptop, the connection asked for the passphrase, and we entered it and it connected immediately.

I don't like vista, but for wireless connections, it's a hell of a lot easier.

I need assistance getting XP wireless going.

OK OK, c'mon, I know someone here knows about this.

Our vista laptops connect to our new d-link router perfectly. Also, tonight I just got our ubuntu desktop wirelessly connected to the new home network also. Piece of cake.

dont' know why the hell the xp laptop won't connect.

XP is fucking hell for wireless... but you should be able to spot a wireless connection wizard or some such thing that should let you connect to the network.

it sees our network, but it won't connect. It keeps saying "windows could not find a certificate blah blah..." whatever that means.

and when it is trying to connect, it shows "Validating identity" or something like that...

with our old Netgear router (WEP) it connected fine (it asked for the 26 digit code, then connected automatically after that).

this new d-link I have set as WPA. and I can't get the xp laptop to connect to it.

the sony vaio laptop has something called wireless setup wizard, but it doesn't load. says can't find xml file or something like that. this computer is not mine, it is my stepdaughters machine. So the connection needs to be setup thru windows control panel or whatever.

Is installing Vista on the XP laptop out of the question?

If it aint I would just switch out the XP for Vista.

is there some way to "hard code" an ID or IP into the xp machine, then go into the router admin and tell it the machines identity? Like I said at first, I'm a networking noob...

I don't think XP came with WPA support out of the box. There might be more patches, but you could start there.
I highly recommend you keep WPA. WEP is not secure.

You can also try using the control panel from your wireless card instead of the Windows wireless controls. Some of these vendor controls have more features, like WPA2 support and what not. You might want to check the wireless vendor site for updated drivers and control panel.

she might already have wpa capability installed...

under the wireless connection setup in XP, for Encryption, it does list WPA as a choice. I'm at work now, the machine is not in front of me, but I think I remember that there are two boxes under that for a password, but they are grayed out, so I can't enter anything in them.

It also lists AES and TKIP for choices. My router is set as "AES and TKIP". so I'm not sure to pick AES on XP or TKIP. I tried both though, and no go.

Note: I didn't mention before, but a few days ago I changed the new router to WEP just to see if the xp laptop would connect. It did not connect. That is strange because it did connect to the old netgear router, which was WEP.
