How is this even a contest. One played second banana to the most dominant player at the time. The other lead a franchise to the best winning percentage of the 4 major league teams since he arrived.

One toiled in mediocrity once dominant big man left. The other hasn't missed the playoffs once, and has bowed out in the first round only once.

Finally, one nearly ripped a team apart, while the other has done everything (from taking less money on a contract to taking a backseat offensively in the Finals when another player have a HUGE matchup advantage) to keep the team together.

Kobe is not the athlete of the decade over Duncan; that's ridiculous.

Someone help me throw the poll, I keep deleting cookies and voting again, but I'm seeing 2 more votes for Kobe for every 1 vote I add.

Interesting question by ESPN --NBA athlete of the decade?

Not NBA player of the decade. Or NBA MVP of the decade.

Does the question suggest the answer (as is so often the case with polls)?

Nathan Explosion

I threw in the "Duncan has a higher winning percentage than Shaq and Kobe" argument. Don't think Kobe lovers will buy it. Stats can be misleading, but winning isn't one of them. Duncan wins games. He's so good, he got Gino and Parker in the top 15 of all time when they didn't belong.

So sad.

I would vote for Duncan over Kobe as of now in their careers. With that said, I also think Kobe will end up with the better resume when it is all said and done. Time will tell.

But to go to the extreme of cheating to raise the numbers in a poll. Wow... simply pathetic and ohhhh so insecure. :bang

Exactly. Championships are a measuring stick, but in the modern NBA, Finals MVPs have to be strongly considered. Anybody who seriously equates Bryant's contribution to the three Laker titles from 2000-2002 to the first three Spurs titles with Tim is absolutely off their rocker. there's no comparison whatsoever.

Look up the stats Shaquille put up in those three Finals. He averaged something like 34 and 16 over the course of all three. Bryant coattailed him.

Tim has never coattailed anybody.

Duncan was the leader on all three teams and he won back to back MVPs.

Kobe on the other hand was Shaq's Robin the early part of the decade.

Kobe was a Superstar in those Championship years too. You put Duncan instead of Kobe on that team and he would still be second fiddle to Shaq too. You guys give no credit to Kobe, he was a very important piece on that team. You can't say Lakers shaq would have still won championships if you replace kobe with another guard, Shaq-Kobe was a great geat Duo, one of the greatest if not the best.

By that logic, Shaq has 4 rings this decade and 3 Finals MVPs. So is Shaq the player of the decade?

Oh wait, but Tim has a higher winning percentage than both Shaq and Kobe. So he's the player of the decade.

Either way, Kobe loses.

The list is really Shaq and Duncan. Kobe doesn't enter the discussion because Shaq was the best player on the Lakers teams (has the Finals MVPs to prove it) when they 3-peated and Duncan has won more than both Kobe and Shaq.

First off, Shaq was the dominant force. He has the hardware to prove it (3 Finals MVPs).

How many HOFers did the Celtics teams that defeated Wilt have?

Right now you're showing your ignorance in regards to NBA Wilt played in.

Nathan Explosion
08-07-2009, 01:47 AM
How many of them would be in the hall of fame if they played in today's game? Or didn't play together?

Conjecture. Fact is, Wilt played against them, and they're in. You all forget Wilts was an absolutely amazing athlete to boot. He was a collegiate high jump champion, and became the best volleyball player in the world after he retired, WHEN HE WAS IN HIS 40's.

People try to diminish Wilt's accomplishments by saying he never won, completely forgetting how loaded those Celtics teams were. I've heard a counter saying that Wilt played with HOFers as well, but those Celtics teams produced something like 8 or 9 HOFers. Absolutely ridiculous.

Nathan Explosion
08-07-2009, 01:48 AM
Bob Cousy could basically be today's Steve Nash. A very flashy guard who could run the fast break like no one else. Bill Sharman was a great outside shooter and could pull off a small guard game.

KC and Sam Jones were two players that could play in todays game as well. Havlicek could play in today's era easily.

Don't forget Russell. Russell had the bball IQ to hang with anyone in addition to the physical tools.

Nathan Explosion
08-07-2009, 01:49 AM
But the question is... would they be in the hall of fame?

No, the question is, Are they in the Hall of Fame. The short answer, yes. To ask anything else is pure conjecture.

Nathan Explosion
08-07-2009, 01:59 AM
I don't think anyone doubt's Russell would be a player in today's game. I was just throwing out some names that people would not think of.

Some people doubt Wilt could play in today's game, so I can never assume anyone would think Russell could play. I mean seriously, if you can score 100 points in an NBA game, you can ball a little. And if you have more rings than fingers, you can ball a little too. Yet you have people saying that the competition was inferior and therefore, the accomplishments don't translate as well.

I'm young (27) but I'm not stupid. Unfortunately, you can't say the same for a lot of NBA fans these days. People who think that today's game is the best have no sense of history, even recent history. For every Dwight Howard and Amare you have Hakeem and DRob (athletically speaking for all the following players). For every Kobe you have Jordan. For every Lebron there's Shawn Kemp and Karl Malone.

And I only went back 15-20 years. I didn't even mention the 70s and 80s players, guys like Bird, Magic, Dr. J, Gervin, Moses Malone, and of course, Kareem, to name a few to say the least.

Nathan Explosion
08-07-2009, 02:01 AM
I'm fairly certain I could have been a factor during that time period. lol That's 100% honest too. I've seen the footage. These marginal players would get destroyed by today's NBA. Shaq would have obliterated Russell.

I think you're completely missing the point. Russell was a smart player. He admits that Wilt had the physical tools to destroy him, but Russell was much smarter and used it to his advantage to the tune of 11 rings.

Just because Shaq is new doesn't mean he's the best. Remember what Phila and myself said about Russell as an athlete.

Don't forget the rule changes. As great as Jordan was, can you even imagine how dominant he'd be today with the hand checking rules?

Once he figured it all out and got past the Pistons, he was unstoppable (ask Patrick Ewing and about 3 other Knicks). Throw in the rule changes and he could be 2-3 times better than he was, as amazing as that sounds.

Nathan Explosion

What people don't understand is that back then it was hard to be a player. The pay was low the conditions were bad and that's not even talking about game play. The old Boston garden used to be filled with smoke during games! The players wore old converse all stars, not nikes. The game was much more physical and defensive oriented. There was little flash in the game because it was fundamentals. The players of the 60s had all around games. They could pass shoot score defend and rebound. The game wasn't soft like it is today. If a player got slapped on the way up half the time it wouldn't be called. Today you can't touch the player with the ball, back then if a block attempt hit your forearm then too bad. It kept the game at a fast pase and made players tougher. Shaq back in the 60s would be pretty beastly, but people don't understand that Wilt was actually stronger than Shaq.

I think the question should be, with all the differences in rules, which players could play back then and handle the physicality?

Shaq and Duncan immediately spring to mind (Shaq for his strength and Duncan for his fundamentals). However, there are a lot of perimeter players who don't like the contact and cry whenever they're touched or fouled hard.

Gino, Parker are unafraid of hard contact. Dwayne Wade is the same way.

Anyone else? It's late and I'm getting tired so any omission isn't on purpose.

I just love these guys talking about how players like Wilt couldn't play in todays game. Especially the morons who are not even old enough to have seen them play. Sports will always evolve and the players will always get better, bigger, stronger etc. The point is, at the time they played, they excelled. If you took Wilt out of a time machine and put him in today's NBA, he would make the current crop of centers look like fools. Take him out of the time machine and in addition give him the advantages players have today with nutrition, training, facilities etc and the gap would be even wider.

Phila_C brought up how Wilt played pickup games after he retired. He played many of those in Pauley Pavillion at UCLA. On one occasion, as Magic reiterated, they were playing and Magic called a cheap foul on Chamberlin. Wilt says, you will not score another basket. Magic, as hard as he tried, and one of the greatest in his prime, was blocked on every shot attempt thereafter. Not some.... EVERY.

All you who diminish the hall of famers who come from earlier eras and created the environment where players today have benefited have no clue.

I suppose in 40 years you will be saying Duncan could never play in todays NBA and diminish all his accomplishments. Oh maybe after 40 years you might actually have taken a step out of your fishbowl and realized what an ignorant fool you used to be.

cobbler
08-07-2009, 02:44 AM
gotta love this one too..

"When challenged, Wilt could do almost anything he wanted. In 1961 a new star named Walt Bellamy came into the league. Bellamy was 6-foot-10, and was scoring 30 points a game. First time they played against each other, they met at half court. Bellamy said, 'Hello, Mr. Chamberlain. I'm Walter Bellamy.' Chamberlain reached for Bellamy's hand and said, 'Hello, Walter. You won't get a shot off in the first half.' Wilt then blocked Bellamy's first nine shots. At the start of the second half Wilt said to Bellamy, 'Okay, Walter. Now you can play.'"

Duncan has NEVER missed the Playoffs, and had never been knocked out in the 1st round up until this past Season. Kobe, has also lost 2 Finals this Decade (04' and 08') in embarrasing fashion. Duncan is undefeated in the Finals (4-0) and also has 3 Finals MVP's to Kobe's 1. Shall I keep going? :flag:

1999 is not considered part of the last decade.

Start at 0:26.

That's Wilt (36 yo) bitching Kareem (25 yo), swatting the shit out of his "unblockable" Sky Hook twice, once while it's at its apex. You fools who think that kind of athleticism and timing wouldn't translate to the modern game need to rethink your silly little opinions.

Kobe is not the athlete of the decade over Duncan; that's ridiculous.

Someone help me throw the poll, I keep deleting cookies and voting again, but I'm seeing 2 more votes for Kobe for every 1 vote I add.

As someone said ealier this poll, this is an issue of popularity and is just about the volume of people in LA vs SA. LA county has 9.8 million, Bexar County has 1.6 mil. If Kobe is not ahead at least 3:1 or 4:1 then he statically is a loser.

In the end the real scientific poll done by Forbes shows Kobe is the least liked player in the NBA. He may be a great player, but the NBA will be better off once his arrogant ass is off the court.

Duncan: '00-'10 --- 3 Reg.Season MVP's, 3 Finals appearances 3 Trophies 2 FINALS MVP trophies.

Kobe (the BRAT): '00-'10 --- 1 Reg Season MVP, 5 Finals appearances 3 trophies piggy-backing Shaq; 1 on his own, 1 Finals MVP.,

Because Timmy means more to his team, and is the consumate professional and everything Kobe isn't, (and I'm already counting this years trophy here and now for Timmy and the Spurs) Player of the Decade by a landslide goes to Tim Duncan. Stats and accolades mean everything when you're giving an award like this. Gratefully, Kobe ends up on the short end of the 'stick'..... I wonder how many young white girls (especially in CO) can say the same about Kobe the Adulterer!!!

For someone who "...could care less..." (I never understood that particular phrase, shouldn't it be 'couldn't care less'?) you sure rag on people a lot. Not to mention you're more likely to 'knock yourself out' banging your head into a brick wall so much over something you supposedly don't care about. If you didn't care, you wouldn't post in this thread 6 times.

The question is who is the athlete of the decade. There is no denying that Kobe is more physically more "athletic" than Duncan, but in every other aspect of what it means to be a professional athlete, Duncan is far superior to Bryant. No question about it.
