The Timberwolves aren't going to do any better than Kurt Rambis. Unfortunately for Minnesota, Rambis can do a lot better than them.

So Kurt Rambis and the Minnesota Timberwolves continue to talk about Rambis becoming the team's next coach.

We understand this. But there are two things about the process we cannot comprehend.

1) Why haven't the Timberwolves already hired Rambis?

2) Why would Rambis allow himself to be hired by the Timberwolves?

The NBA is an intriguing league, and by intriguing we mean there are some decisions apparently being made with the assistance of Jim Beam.

How can Erik Spoelstra, John Kuester and Jay Triano be hired as NBA coaches before Kurt Rambis?

Hey, nothing against any of those guys. We're sure they put in their time, worked their tails raw and broke down video until their eyes bled.

But none of them comes close to matching Rambis in time spent around champions. Rambis has seven NBA title rings, including four as a player. As a point of comparison, just two NBA franchises have more titles.

A team such as the Timberwolves — total championships: zero — should be straining ligaments attempting to hire an employee like Rambis. This decision should be as easy as reading his glittering résumé.

Success as a player doesn't always lead to success elsewhere, a fact expertly demonstrated by the comically tragic career of Isiah Thomas. But given his past, Rambis is hardly a gamble.

Since retiring as a player, he has served in the league as an assistant coach, an assistant general manager and an interim coach, a 37-game stretch with the Lakers 10 years ago in which his team won 65 percent of the time.

Yet, Rambis remains a lieutenant as people such as Scott Skiles, Jim O'Brien and Eddie Jordan continue to receive multiple opportunities. Each of these three is on his third go-round with an NBA team, still trying to win something of note as an NBA coach.

Jordan was just hired by Philadelphia despite a 230-288 career record and one postseason series triumph in eight seasons. In a combined 16 years, Skiles' and O'Brien's teams have won four playoff series total.

Meanwhile, Rambis has been serving under Phil Jackson, a Hall of Famer known for taking teams to the Finals and then winning there. No one can be certain of this, but there's a decent chance Rambis has learned a couple of things from Jackson.

As a player, Rambis spent much of his career under Pat Riley, another guy who knows how to hold a trophy aloft. In terms of references, Jackson and Riley would be pretty good ones, don't you think?

Now, from the other side, would you leave this current version of the Lakers to join a team that, since 2005, has been coached by four different men, including Kevin McHale twice?

Rambis appears to be next in line to take over the Lakers from Jackson, who hardly is entrenched in that giant, cushiony throne of his. Jackson considered stepping down after this season and has talked about wanting to coach less next season.

Why would Rambis walk away from a team that should compete for championships for the foreseeable future to take a job with a franchise that has won only one division championship all time?

Sure, it's a head coaching position, and we know those are precious. But Rambis has been forced to wait this long, why not wait another year, knowing there's a good chance this will be farewell for Jackson?

Personally, we would rather remain patient and inherit a roster that includes Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum than leap now for one that features Brian Cardinal, Ryan Hollins and Chucky Atkins.

The Timberwolves players, an otherwise young group, might not be the most enlightened, either. They reportedly supported McHale remaining as their coach after going 20-43 under him this past season.

In their current condition, the Timberwolves aren't exactly all the buzz at home. For many of the citizens of Minnesota, the NBA seems to be just another winter activity that gets in the way of ice fishing.

Here's all you need to know to understand the team's status:

A recent poll on ESPN's Web site asked if Rambis should take the Timberwolves job if offered. More people from Virginia voted than from Minnesota.

The Timberwolves, at this moment, aren't even one-tenth as popular in their home state as Torii Hunter is, and he plays for the Angels.

So why again would Rambis want to walk into that environment, even if it is as the coach?

Here's our advice:

For the Timberwolves, you have to offer this job to Rambis, period.

For Rambis, you have to politely say no thanks, remain in Los Angeles, win another title as an assistant and then take over for Jackson.

Leaving a team on top to join one going mostly nowhere would be a regrettable move, indeed. Just ask Trevor Ariza.

Love Rambis as an assistant coach but I REALLY didn't want to see him take over after PJ, glad that won't be happening. Best of luck to Rambis, it's going to be quite a few cold, dark years up in Minnesota though.
