Simple question. Do you freeze your bread so it will last longer?

I buy two loaves from Costco. Freeze one.

I don't keep the loaf I'm using frozen. Microwave defrosted bread sucks ass.

heating bread in the microwave hasn't bothered me that much. But there is a difference. I can see why some would hate it.

I got so sick and tried of throwing away bread because it expired. Such a waste.

I honestly have no problem with bread that's been frozen and allowed to defrost at room temp. Like the OP said and for the Costco buyers like me, it beats throwing out half a loaf because you couldn't eat it before mold set in.

Does one really save that much on bread at Costco?

I'm not sure, because I have no idea what a loaf at the regular store costs, but I really like the quality.

I'm just a Costco man in general. Great company. I'll buy anything I can there.

Definatly. Otherwise it dries up real quick. I like to refrigerate as many things as I can...even chocolate.

Bread is so cheap, why would anyone waste the electricity freezing it and thawing? Then it loses all the moisture balance too. I even buy the more expensive breads at the Franz brands bakery outlet (http://usbakery.com/index.php?page=locations), 3 for $5.00. They are wrapped up well, and last for weeks until you unseal the package. These same breads are more than $3.00 a loaf at Walmart. Even more at Safeway, Fred Meyer, etc. I would never consider freezing good bread.

We get those smaller loaves of bread.
If anything is left over I feed it to the birds.
But Jake never shows up.

What's your definition of good? Would that include the pre-sliced 12 grain that I make PB&J on at 2 AM? Is your outlet bread sliced?

I wouldn't call that category of bread all that good, just necessary... and I'll freeze it like it were a dead cat. (no offense Havoc)

I would never freeze the good, fresh, bakery made italian loaves, hubcaps, etc that I get at my local hippie grocer.

Waste is waste. Some people think moldy bread is wasted money, other think freezing it is wasted money. I think moldy bread is wasted money. Your freezer is running anyway. On that note, frozen then thawed 3 for $5 Franz bread (Franz Outlet, SE across from Johnson Creek Market) tastes exactly the same to me as never frozen. Another thing, that irregular bread sometimes gets frozen by Franz before it reaches the outlets anyway.

Yes, it's sliced bread. It's double wrapped. They have cheap ones that are I think are 5 loaves for $4.00. The Cannon Beach I buy is 24 oz loaves, the Whole Wheat is 26 oz. I buy others, but have the two on hand right now:

i never freeze bread...what's the point..i mean jeeze it's just a buck or two a week. I never throw it away anyway it's usually gone before it expires anyway.

the problem are hamburger or hot dog buns... i just want one or 2 and I end up having to toss the others .

Nope. Never thought the effort equaled the return. Like people said, bread is cheap, and best when you first buy it anyways.

I do, however, try to find good uses for my old bread like stuffing, bread pudding, or making breadcrumbs for stuff like meatballs, so I try not to waste too much.

I will keep tortillas in the fridge and pull them out as I intend to eat them, but they seem to go stale quick otherwise.

Whatever doesn't get eaten goes to the birds.

+1 The bread still tastes fine and it lasts longer. I probably threw out several dozen loaves-worth until I started chucking it in the fridge.

That's what I was thinking, I was even more surprised to see the poll so close.I've seen it done before, and it's never the same after coming out of the fridge or freezer. Must be bread full of nasty crap if it can be done and be the same or better when it comes out.

I could see how someone might do that, however we shop weekly and nothing ever gets a chance go to bad. I could see how a loaf of bread might last a single person a few weeks and freezing it might be a good option.

I don't freeze it, I just put it in the fridge - lasts about a week longer then and once you take it out it takes little time to go back to room temp.

I buy from Costco & freeze bread only because we buy enough for 2 weeks (4 loaves). We shop every 2 weeks when I get paid. Sure, we'll stop by the store to get 1 or 2 items when we really want something, but shopping every 2 weeks keeps us on budget.
