That's a new one.
Prahps to the Broncos for playing great defense for the middle half of the game. It seemed between Manning's 3rd and 4th TD drives, he didn't complete a single pass. I'm sure he completed two or three in that span, but it really did feel like he was getting completely shut down and that's something you rarely see a team do to Manning.
What did the Broncos in was the way they tried to play offense. They were doing the whole ball control, move the chains, keep Manning on the bench thing, which is a good strategy in any situation that doesn't involve you being down 21-0. It took them a very long time to put 16 points on the scoreboard, versus the Colts only needing probably 20 minutes to get 3 TDs. The defense is finally getting some respect, and it's just sad that it took a half-bad game from Peyton Manning to make some realize this Colts defense is the best they've ever had. Prahps to Brandon Marshall for grabbing 21 passes in this game. That's insane to do even if you're matched up with small DBs. I also thought it was a classy move to give his two touchdown footballs to Bronco fans in the stands.
Moving on, in today's press conference, Coach Caldwell alluded to the Colts resting only injured guys for the Jacksonville game Thursday. He said something to the effect of "We'll approach this game the same way we have the first thirteen, the only thing that will affect someone's playing time is whether they are injured." I think that's the way to go in this situation. You want to be healthy and have momentum in the playoffs, and wholesale resting players because of injury potential destroys momentum in my opinion. Also, it's unfair to screw Manning out of a fair MVP race if he wants to win it. So prahps to the Colts for at least playing to win the next game.
That Broncos game was also the first time in the Manning era the Colts have won a game he threw three or more interceptions. This defense is tied for 2nd in points allowed and has given up zero TD and one FG following a turnover by the offense. That last stat is fucking incredible.
If I had to guess who's going to sit out against the Glitter Cats on Thursday I'd say Bullitt, Diem, Johnson and Mathis for sure and possibly Addai, Clark, Lacey and Powers depending on how serious their injuries on Sunday were. Clark and Addai both came back in after being hurt, so if I had to guess I'd say they'll play. The thing with Lacey and Powers is the Colts are pretty thin at DB right now anyway so they may get scratched just on the off chance that they could further aggravate the injuries they sustained yesterday and the team could potentially enter the post season without enough DBs to play a dime defense.

I like that Caldwell is going for undefeated. There is risk of injury in EVERY game, with our recent post game history, we need to balance that shit out with the benefit of making sure our players are getting game-speed reps so they hit the playoffs in stride. With their first round bye and home field locked up, the Colts don't have a "meaningful" game for another month. So it is crucial to keep the starters sharp for a post season run.
The one thing that bothers me is the Colts aren't saying shit about the status of Donald Brown, Anthony Gonzalez or Adam Vinatieri. If healthy, all three could be huge weapons come playoff time, but if any of them aren't going to be good to go in January they need to be IRed now. The Colts pulled this shit with Marvin Harrison in 2007 and as great a player as he was, he had a costly, uncharacteristic fumble against the Chargers that was wholly related to that being his first in-game experience since coming back from his knee injury.
I don't want that happening again. If Gonzalez can't come back and get 20-25 catches from Manning, not Painter, then he needs to accept the fact that this is a lost season. Same for Brown. Dude needs to come back and get 20-30 carries or ride IR till next year. Having those guys healthy would make the Colts even more dangerous than they are, but if they're not going to be able to play, then the Colts can pick up two DBs for the playoffs to stack up the secondary a little bit. Keiwan Ratliff, who started quite a few games for the Colts last year during their big 9-0 run, is available and probably my first choice, although the Colts have other roster spots they can get rid of to pick him up if they really want him.

I'm sure you know this, but the final decision on playing comes with Friday practices. If they practice on Friday, they're playing Sunday.

For a short week like this, the league still requires three published injury reports so in lieu of a real injury report on Mondays, teams submit a list of who would and would not have practiced had the team actually practiced today. So this week the final practice day and day to look at as far as who will or won't play would be the Wednesday practice.

Hear that echo? This is Side B of General NFL Fan Opinion on the Possibility of a Perfect Season.
Put yourself in the players' shoes. Winning the Super Bowl is the highest point you can get to in the NFL.... apart from winning the Super Bowl undefeated.
Likely out for the game against the Sparkle Kittens or Glitter Cats, whatever you want to call them:
Freeney, Mathis, Bethea, Powers and Charlie Johnson
But reports have been that Freeney and Bethea have been held out of practice for rest, not because of injury. So they may play. I'd expect the Colts will deploy at least Freeney and possibly Mathis as well only on 3rd down and sit them all other downs.
Donald Brown and Anthony Gonzalez are out again. My patience is wearing thin with both of these dudes, but in 2006 Dallas Clark came back to play a game against the Dolphins the last week of the year and he ended up being money in the playoffs. I'm willing to give them until Week 17, but again, Gonzalez at least needs to be catching balls from Manning and not Painter. By Week 17 I don't think Caldwell is going to give Manning serious minutes, so if Gonzalez doesn't play in the Jets game following this one, he needs to be IRed.

Why wouldn't they just put Gonzalez on IR at this point? It's almost a lost cause for the season and Garcon/Collie have exceeded expectations. It's not like they need him at this point.

Colts will probably go with Stover in the playoffs if Adam isn't healthy by their first game.
I'm starting to get pissed about Gonzalez. Dude has had 3 months to get healthy. If he doesn't play next week then he needs to go on IR. I don't want him getting his first PT of the year in a playoff game.

Good to know that the healthy starters are going to play this week. If they win this game I can't see Caldwell benching them with an opportunity to go 16-0.
Anyway, J.T. is right. If gonzo comes back this week the Colts have two weeks to see if he will be able to contribute at all during the playoffs. The good thing is if he is ready to come back he is going to have a ful month of practice to get ready for the post season as well.

Peyton is what every coach wants behind center, and Drew is what every coach wants to lead. You can easily swap the names and each statement remains true. The NFL delivers.

Colts finally put Anthony Gonzalez on IR

When the Colts parted ways with receiver Marvin Harrison, Anthony Gonzalez moved into the starting lineup.
Gonzalez suffered a knee injury in Week One, and he has been unable to play ever since.
But the Colts carried him on the 53-man roster, in the hopes that he'd be able to return.
Now, with two weeks left in the regular season and the playoffs coming thereafter, the Colts have announced that Gonzalez has been moved to injured reserve.
"Anthony has been diligent in the rehabilitation of his knee, but it has not progressed to the point that it allows him to return to the field this season," team president Bill Polian said. "We look forward to his healthy return next season."
Gonzalez joined the team in 2007 as a first-round draft pick from Ohio State. In his first two seasons, he caught a total of 94 passes for 1,240 yards and seven touchdowns.
Vinatieri will kick against the Jets on Sunday.
Matt Stover staying on the team for the playoffs.
Team will probably choose who will make kicks based on the distance (my guess is they'll use Stover for anything closer than 40, Vinatieri anything longer than 40).

I'm just infinitely grateful their first loss didn't happen in the postseason. Or the Super Bowl. I'm sure this is just like 1/1,000th the feeling Patriots fans had in '07.

Irsay finally spoke yesterday, and said he agreed as well...but I bet he doesn't. I mean, when will they get this chance again?
Like I said before, IF they get to the SB and win, that'll be nice. But there will ALWAYS be that "what if" factor in the back of their minds.
Oh, and since that crappy call, I've had a bad feeling about the playoffs. The momentum will be gone, as will the Colts. Just saying.
Benching healthy starters in a home game is a pretty big sin against the Colts fan base if you ask me. I was cool with it when I heard that Addai was hurt in the game, but he practiced this week, so obviously his "injury" was nothing an ice bath and a day off didn't take care of. Colts fans deserved better. They should have tried to get a big lead and then done that.
On the other hand I feel pretty good about the playoffs. Losing the way they did hasn't been a slight against the Colts team but rather the staff, specifically Polian. For the first time ever, we're going into the playoffs and I don't worry about the defense's ability to keep us in the game. Actually, I feel pretty good going into the playoff with all of our key defensive players being healthy and rested. Peyton's been in "eff you" mode all year. I really think he's still mad about not having a possession in OT against the Chargers. I think he'll have a pretty good postseason, which should mean a good postseason for the Colts offense as a whole.

Benching healthy starters in a home game is a pretty big sin against the Colts fan base if you ask me. I was cool with it when I heard that Addai was hurt in the game, but he practiced this week, so obviously his "injury" was nothing an ice bath and a day off didn't take care of. Colts fans deserved better. They should have tried to get a big lead and then done that.
On the other hand I feel pretty good about the playoffs. Losing the way they did hasn't been a slight against the Colts team but rather the staff, specifically Polian. For the first time ever, we're going into the playoffs and I don't worry about the defense's ability to keep us in the game. Actually, I feel pretty good going into the playoff with all of our key defensive players being healthy and rested. Great win for the Colts tonight. Couple things to point out:
Colts held the Ravens under 100 yards rushing. Det boy Ray Rice came to play though. Colts D had a great nose for the ball tonight and seemed to not make a single mistake after Freeney went offsides on their first drive.
Best play of the game was what ended up being a two yard pass to Addai. Ball was tipped and Suggs had a great angle on it but Addai went Randy Moss and jumped up to get it. Clutch play by Addai.
Pierre Garcon dropped some major loads in this game. That fumble he hit on Reed was beastly, but his closing speed catching up to him was beastlier. Marvin Harrison was a great Colt but had that been him he would have started bitching at the ref for a flag. Garcon didn't quit.
Kinda pissed that the Colts just sat on the 17 point lead but it was probably the right thing to do. Flacco wasn't beating them and they knew it.
Bonus points to Raheem Brock and Clint Session for tag teaming Ray Rice and Bethea and Powers for signing the check with an interception each.

The Ravens and Jets are pretty much the same team, except the Jets play the pass a little better because of Revis. Obviously they're both run-first offenses with explosive backs to do the job. Basically, they do a lot of the same things on offense and their defenses have similar strengths. I think the Colts can put the brakes on Shonn Greene. They have some familiarity with Jones because of Super Bowl XLI but that was one game and he played on a different team so it's not necessarily the same. Plus Flacco is easily an upgrade over Sanchez so I think it'll come down to about the same game plan. I'd just like it that if Indy is able to get out to a two score lead like they did against the Ravens that they don't go into the Dungyball shell and just try to run the clock out. Typical Colts formula is that if they know your offense isn't finishing drives, Peyton tries to go for one of those eight and a half minute field goal drives to deliver the double dickpunch special.
Before the playoffs even started my father and I talked about this game as a potential no-win scenario for the Colts because if they lose, people will say they could have blocked the Jets from the playoffs and avoided this. Although by beating the Jets in Week 16, they likely allow Houston or Pittsburgh into the tournament and I'd rather face the Jets than either of those two in a playoff match. And if the Colts win, everyone will say they should've just beaten the Jets in Week 16 and gone for undefeated. Either way bailing on an undefeated season is going to be a sour topic in Indy regardless of this season ending in a Super Bowl victory, so I figure I'll just leave that topic where it belongs, in the past.
Going into the playoffs I thought the Jets were the worst team and I was wrong. They're the second worst team; the Bengals were the worst. But the Colts can't sleep on this team. If they're sharp on offense I really see no way they lose this game. Revis should limit Wayne from putting up a monster game, but I don't think he shuts him down. In Week 16 the first three looks at Wayne were incompletes, the next four Wayne was 3-4 for 33 yards. I think he was starting to figure shit out before he was benched.
Indy fans are going to bring it hardcore. Sanchez is going to get eaten alive by that dome. I expect to see a lot of punts by the Jets, but their commitment to the run will likely result in one big play, probably a long TD run in the red zone.
35-10 Colts. Close game early, turnovers and Peyton Manning kill the Jets in the second half. Bonus points if Wayne grabs two TDs covered by Revis.

Should really be 6-1, second loss was the first Jaguars game in '08 that was blown by the defense and Manning put up his second-worst game against a Williams defense since the first game he ever played against one. To be perfectly honest, I was quite surprised because I wasn't seeing them as the real deal or as the best team in the league all season...But good teams find ways to win, and that's what the Colts did each and every game.
And win or lose, I was here rooting them on.
Last night, they lost to a far better team - a team that was playing TEAM ball all season long.
But to think that Peyton is a lesser QB because of last night is preposterous. I don't think there's a QB out there who could've made that team what it was. All the credit and blame shouldn't be placed on him, but dang, look what he did with Garcon and Collie all season. Which other QB could've done that? Could Tom Brady? Honestly? I'd love to know if he would've put in the time and effort with them that Manning did.

He is an amazing quarterback, and he still has plenty of time in his career.
I'm proud of him, and I'm proud of the Colts.

It was a great season. However I am dissapointed in the effort last night. AND we got outcoached. Could hardly get pressure on Brees in the 2nd half. But we'll be back contending next year and a few years after that. Which is alot better than 30 other teams will fare in the next few seasons. It'll come together again next season. Hopefully we'll have a healthy D playing then. Pull some of the weight.
