first problem I see with 7: you can't do searches for text in files anymore

This happened with the transition to Vista.
It was caused by Microsoft having a monopoly on the desktop search market. The Windows search bundled with XP was good enough that it constituted an unfair advantage to other search programs.
Go here, and let it run (index files) overnight. It actually is superior to the old windows search in many ways.

You could do it old school and use grep to search text files for words or phrases.
