It's still not time to usher someone drafted in 05 into the top 5 range in this league, while ignoring some diplomatic veterans like Dirk, Tim, KG... If you only measure a play by his stats then I'll argue Kevin Durant is also a top 5, or at least top 10 player even though his team sucks. With a top 5 player on your team, you should never lose a game by a big margin as wide as 121-63.

Paul is young and will potentially become a better player than KG in prime, or Tim in prime, so it's reasonable Paul is a better option for the long run. But the veterans like Duncan, Dirk and KG are undoubtedly superior to Paul in terms of the effects made on court. Paul just has a bigger worth, which is mixed with his youth.

Players' ages are always counted when they are evaluated, and Paul is much younger than Dirk. It's true that Paul is more valuable for a team because he can serve his team many more years than Dirk does, but it doesn't mean Paul is better than Dirk in terms of the game only. The management of a team is a different thing than the games, when you're running a team then Paul is absolutely more valuable but you know whom you should choose if you only need to win a game rather than lose it by 121-63.

How does he make David West better? How has Peja Stojakovic never really regained his form from the Sacramento days if he's such a point guard prodigy? The only person I see him making better is Chandler. And an alley oop thrown anywhere near the rim isn't a hard pass to throw... at all.

06 finals and 07 first round were both muthafukin rigged. The video files of those games are still available for us to check, so you can easily find the proof to convince yourself that the Mavs were the best team in that season and deserving of the championship. However, I don't think a 121-63 came from the only affact of biased officiating work, even if that game was slightly manipulated.

Okay, let's first dispel this misconception that all Paul does is get steals, courtesy of basketball-reference.com.

Defensive Rating
19. Chris Paul (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html)-NOH103.1

That's second among point guards.

Defensive Win Shares
8. Chris Paul (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html)-NOH4.7

Second among point guard again.

On top of that, he gets by far the most steals, and the Blazers scored 40 points on the Hornets in one quarter when Paul was down.

West didn't get any playing time before he came along, so that's a terrible example. West was also named the top player in college basketball by a few publications, so it isn't like he came up out of thin air.

College =/= NBA

Although West is no scrub. I do find it interesting that you're actually defending him, because most of the people here call him overrated.

So why not? Paul's IMMEASURABLE impact should make it 300x easier, shouldn't it?

It DOES make it 300x easier, but in the end, only Peja Stojakovic can put the ball through the hoop when he's shooting, not anybody else. If Peja airballs a wide open 3-pointer, that's his fault not Paul's.

Bench players aren't supposed to be all-stars.

They also aren't supposed to be so incompotent that they blow a lead or dig the Hornets into a whole EVERY FUCKING TIME PAUL GOES OUT. You should probably watch a Hornets game some time.

I don't question him being a good-to-great player, but you can't even compare Paul to James.

I'm not trying to say that Paul is better, but comparisons to LeBron are extremely valid.

Win Shares
1.LeBron James (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/j/jamesle01.html)-CLE19.6
2.Chris Paul (http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/p/paulch01.html)-NOH17.5

That's pretty Goddamn impressive, if you ask me.

49 wins is nothing, especially considering Paul probably has more talent at his disposal.

Who? David West?

Peja Stojakovic - 13.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 0.378 3p%, in 61 games.
Tyson Chandler - 8.8 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.2 bpg, in 45 games.

Those two missed a combined total of 58 games, with players like Hilton Armstrong and Sean fucking Marks starting for the Hornets. Chris Paul made them look almost passable.

I would like to see this talent that you speak of. If you think horrible fucking bench players who can't create their own shot worth a damn, are sufficient teammates, then that's you.

I think Paul would be the favorite candidate if BR asked the question like "who is the choice of a team on rebuilding mode?" Where as, Paul is definitely NOT the guy to choose for a win-now team like Mavs, Lakers... unless the whole bunch of superior players are all unavailable, and it's quite an easy job to list 7-8 guys superior over-all to Chris Paul in this league.

:lolRight.. It's a hypothetical for rodriguez who says paul can't be the part of a win-now team. 80% of NBA players, if they had their choice, would pick Paul to be their PG. The other 20% would be lying to protect their own PG.

Yeah I really don't understand how people don't see that Paul is a game changer when he's on the court. He improves his team as much as anyone in the NBA. I guess it's because assists, controlling tempo, and lightning fast drives for the LAYUP or dumping it off for the assist aren't as flashy as a lebron or Kobe dunk.

He is a lot better to watch when he plays the mavs... when he plays the jazz he's not that great!

Sad, but very true. And it's not just b/c of Dwill, the Jazz's D just knows how to minimalize Paul's impact.

there were a lot of games where he got in foul trouble and yea i noticed they always had 1 guy right behind deron in the lane so either paul had to shoot over d-will or beat 2 or 3 guys to the hole.. tough task for a guy that small with no help on the wings..if those guys would make thier shots that kind of D wouldnt work.

The Hornets plan is to never make it as far as the Finals, lose in the first or second round of the playoffs if you're lucky enough to get there, along with salary dumping good players.

Rasual Butler? The Hornets did just fine without him.

Assuming this year, and no future year? It am teetering between Wade and Howard. Howard always gives you a chance by himself as a bigg, and Wade can carry a team. Kobe on a new team would probably just implode and LeBron is the choice for the long run, as Wade is probably frail and Howard may never develop an offensive game.

Dwight Howard shouldn't be in the top 5 IMO

Neither should CP3.

He's top 5 lol. The only way your argument is even plausible to a person with an average IQ is if you tried to make the case Chris Paul is the 6th best player in the league. Dropping him below 5 is hard to argue.

It's quite easy to argue:

Bron
Kobe
Wade
Duncan

Take your pick of Howard or Dirk to round out the top 5. Maybe CP3 vaults into the top 5 this year, but based off the season that just concluded, it's very easy to make a case for top 10 status for him. Hell, that still makes him a franchise player. But top 5? He'll get there, but not yet.

No, he is not. The dude's put up stats never before seen by a point guard

CP3's career high in assists: 12 per game
Oscar Robertson's career high in assists: 12
Magic Johnson's career high in assists: 13
Isiah Thomas's career high in assists: 14
John Stockton's career high in assists: 15

CP3's career high in points: 23 per game
Oscar Robertson's career high in points: 31
Magic Johnson's career high in points: 24
Isiah Thomas's career high in points: 23

What were you saying again?

Statistically, CP3 is definitely top 5.

But you know, I like to look at the intangibles, especially in the playoffs recently.

2-0 lead, blows it v Spurs. how? Lets Jannero fucking Pargo take 13 4th quarter shots in a crucial game 7.

v Nuggets? Horrible stats, was clearly outclassed by Billups. QUIT in Game 4, losing by 58.

Factor in that he consistently gets outclassed by Williams, it's disputable that CP3 is the best PG in the game. With that, then you can dispute whether he's a top 5 player. I consider him top 10.

This simply isn't the stuff of a top 5 player in the NBA.

Paul hasn't made re-adjustments as the league has adjusted to him. He's holding on too tight, afraid to move, to change for fear he'll degrade, hoping "they'll just go away" and he can re-commence his initial career rampage. It ain't gonna work...it'll only get worse.

I think Paul is a great player, but slightly overrated. It's hardly an insult to call him top 10 worthy of franchise player designation.

I'm talking about combined totals of win shares, assists, points, PER, steals, and so on--not just points and assists.

Who would you put in front of Paul RIGHT NOW? You people are taking reputation over actual talent.

If Paul was on the Mavs, he would be the face of your franchise. To Put Dirk and Duncan over Paul AS OF RIGHT NOW is just wrong.

sons out of the top 5 players in the NBA right now, who would you want on your team going into this season?

Son, how is Paul Pierce not on this list. I mean he is the best player in the world. He said it himself. :blah

Chris fucking Paul has a bigger shit absorber, which makes louder sounds than Paul does with his mouth. Since Chris Paul's words were heard by more people then they were also transmitted farther and wider, then more believable.

Dwight Howard is not a m'fken TOP 5 player at this moment in time...his team went to the Finals but people are acting like he carried them or some shit. Hedo was arguably their best player in the playoffs and Rashard was solid as well, Howard is still way too raw on offense.

Give me Tim over Dwight right now, Dwight cannot take over a game on the offensive end at this point in time...he needs to develope some post moves. Its retarded how people completely ignore his lack of offense and automatically consider him a TOP 5 player just cause his team reached the Finals. I would place Carmelo up there instead of Howard.

As for the poll, I voted Lebron.
