My final game of the season. My nephew’s first ever NBA game. Neither of us were disappointed.
My courtside ticket allowed me to get down to the floor but they held back my nephew, Anthony, until they made him leave all together (his ticket was with my brother’s family in the 200’s). Mike Wilks was kind enough to go sign an autograph for Anthony and we managed to snag Shaun Livingston and Quinton Ross as they were walking by. Manu Ginobili was walking out just as they were making Anthony leave so he went to sign just for him, then began his warm-ups. It meant the world to my little angel and I am reminded once again of just what a great group of guys are on this team.
By the way, if anyone asks him, Anthony will tell you the greatest basketball player ever is Robert Horry. Yes, I have him thoroughly brainwashed.
I gave Bruce Bowen a disc of my videos, the newest one dedicated to him, and told him that not only should he win DPOY, he should also win Comedian of the Year, I love watching his interviews. He laughed and pointed towards the nearby PJ Carlisimo and said he’s the real comedian.
RoHo stopped by and I showed him the picture of him and I together and he asked if I wanted him to sign it. I hadn’t actually thought to ask him that but managed to find a pen. I asked if he would be picking up his option to play next year in San Antonio, expecting him to say something along the lines of “Of course.” Instead he said, “I don’t know.” I was shocked, I said, “You have to stay with San Antonio,” and he said, “I just don’t know.” I told him this was my final game of the season, wished him lucked and he shook my hand. “I don’t know” is just not the answer I was hoping for.
After Ginobili finished his warm-up, I got to chat with him again and showed him the pictures I had done of Tony Parker with the different hair-styles (Duncan’s afro, Gino’s mop, Sprewell’s pig-tails and Ben Wallace’s ‘fro), he was laughing so hard so I let him keep the pictures to tease TP a bit. When Tony came out for the shoot-around, he saw me and just starting laughing and shaking his head, he gave me 2 thumbs up.
If you read my game reports with regularity, you know that I view the warm-ups as a good indicator for how the game will go. I can tell you that RoHo was working with Mike Wilks, playing D on him, then turned around and let Pretty Boy play D on Robert. I was hoping this wasn’t the game plan but it was fun to watch Wilks trying to get a hand up on Horry’s shot and still be about 2 feet short. They had a good laugh about that.
1st Quarter
My seat was in Section 119CT, Row A, Seat 5 … meaning that I was sitting about 2 feet behind Kerry Kittles, Bobby Simmons and Zeljko Rebraca. When the game began, Staples Center was like a tomb, it was so quiet! That didn’t last long as the Clippers gave their fans something to cheer for. I thought I was watching a replay of the Dallas game as the Step-Child of LA jumped ahead for a quick lead in the 1st Quarter, lead by silly fouls and turnovers by San Antonio.
Will wonders never cease – Rasho Nesterovic with a reverse dunk!
RoHo elevated for a SLAM dunk of his own, which I decided was for me since he knew I was there. Then he turned around and got 2 steals right in a row, one to Ginobili for a driving layup and the other he took for his own. All these highlights and the Spurs still end the quarter down after Quentin Ross hits a buzzer-beater 3.
End of 1st Quarter: Clippers lead 30-20
2nd Quarter
Rasho Nesterovic picks up his 3rd foul just a few minutes into the quarter, not a good sign. Mikki Moore was playing D on Brent Barry, the bench was calling out “He’s a shooter Mikki” because Moore was giving Bricks a lot of space behind the arc.
Nazr Mohammed misses a dunk, Tony Parker hits a 3 (not to mention Rasho’s earlier dunk) and I’m trying to figure out what kind of alternate universe I’m a part of. Clippers still leading at half-time though the Spurs got the lead down to single digits with a run to close the half, capped by a sweet layup by Ginobili.
End of 2nd Quarter: Clippers lead 51-42
3rd Quarter
Horry was getting good position inside, calling for the ball and Tony Parker is waving him off. I suppose that shot-clock violation or TP’s airball were better plays than giving the ball to RoHo.
The Man Manu Ginobili gives the Spurs their first lead with a trey, I can only imagine Pop going Serbian at half time but apparently it worked because the game stayed close after that.
More Bermuda Triangle action: Tony Parker missed both free throws and Rasho Nesterovic is telling off the refs after picking up his 4th foul. Unfortunately, he didn’t stay around long enough to pick up a 5th.
Near the end of the quarter, Rasho comes down in a nasty spill and twists his left ankle. With play continuing on the other end of the court, it took a while for the Spurs coaching staff to notice Rasho on the floor, I know I didn’t notice and he was right in front of me. LA Fans gave him a nice ovation when he finally did stand up and was helped to the locker room by none other than Tim Duncan.
If you were watching the game on TV and wondered why Staples Center exploded when Corey Maggette hit a 3 with 26 seconds left, it’s because that meant we all won a free order of French Fries from McDonalds.
End of 3rd Quarter: Clippers lead 78-77
4th Quarter
Quarter Boy Tony Parker was the man of the first half, notching up 20 points, but Manu Ginobili is Mr. 4th Quarter. He scored 17 of the Spurs’ 28 points, hitting all 7 free throws and 4 of 5 from the field (including both 3’s). Marko Jaric is still looking for his ankles after Manu’s little cross-over move that even had LA fans laughing at him.
Elton Brand fouled out at the 3:39 mark. Jaric hit a prayer to beat the shot-clock then Ginobili turned around and hit his own at the end of the 24 – a 3-point bank shot (did he call glass?). Back and forth, back and forth, including the chit chat. Horry tells Mikki Moore, “Yes you were, yes you were,” as he walked around with his hands behind his back. I don’t know what that was about but there was a lot of smack talk going on.
Getting down to the wire, the Spurs need a score and a stop. Instead, Horry got a turnover as Corey Maggette just took the ball away. Timeout Clippers, they are down by 1 point. Maggette gives the Clippers the lead on the next possession after being fouled by Tony Massenburg. The Spurs take back the lead on a Ginobili lay-up and I jumped out of my chair screaming, which prompted a dirty look from Kerry Kittles.
Chris Kaman waltzes to the basket for a lay-up – tie game and with TP missing the potential game winner, we are headed to overtime.
End of Regulation: Game tied at 105
1st OT
Corey Maggette, the Clippers clutch man, fouls out then Horry goes flying into the first row, the chairs hitting him squarely in the back and the pain terribly apparent. I expect his back will be in a good amount of pain tomorrow.
2:09 – Manu with a steal and Wilcox fouls him. I’m having a nice discussion with the guy next to me and am suddenly stripped of my pen by Kerry Kittles. I sat there dumbfounded until I realized he had to make a notation on the Clippers Over/Under board then gave me back my pen.
0:30 – Ginobili is fouled from behind the arc, Tim Duncan jumps out of his chair and is walking around holding up 3 fingers for all 3 free throws that Ginobili would hit to give the Spurs a 2 point lead.
Shaun Livingston ties the game on yet another lay-up and sends the game into Double OT. Spurs are desperately missing their front court of Duncan and Nesterovic. Clutch time: Ginobili and Horry were the only scorers in this OT, with 3 and 8 points, respectively. I got another dirty look, this time from Mikki Moore.
End of 1st OT: Game tied at 116
2nd OT
Penny Marshall had left just before the end of regulation but decided to come back for the action. The guys are getting tired out there, one team is calling a timeout and then the other team follows with another timeout to give the guys some time to breathe. Manu bricks 2 free-throws but he has good reason to be tired, 40 points on the night!
3:14 – A sight seen too much tonight, Chris Wilcox with a slam dunk.
1:21 – Massenburg to the line as Clippers fans explode into calls of “Airball” in tribute of his earlier airballed FT but TMass completes the 3-point play.
0:34 – Shaun Livingston. Can you imagine if the Clippers had had him healthy the entire season? The 19-year-old kid gives the Clippers a 2-point lead by getting to the rim while being guarded by defensive specialist Bruce Bowen.
What happened next will be a memory that I’ll hold onto for a long time. Brent Barry inbounded to Parker who took it in quickly right to the rim but missed, TMass also missed the tip-in, Chris Kaman taps it out where it’s grabbed by Barry. He tosses it over to Big Shot Rob who just stepped behind the 3-point line and added another game winning shot to his career tally. This is his first with San Antonio. Tim Duncan is jumping up and down around the sidelines, his ankle looks to be feeling pretty good.
I got another couple of dirty looks from Clippers players.
But the game was not over.
Shaun Livingston drives towards the rim and dishes it off to Mikki Moore who elevates for what everyone believes to be the game-winning dunk. Staples Center takes a deep breath, waiting for the explosion of celebration, but is thwarted by Big Block Rob who rejects Moore and seals the victory for San Antonio.
My final game of the season, my nephew’s first ever NBA game. Could it have been any better? Remember I was present for Horry’s 18-point production against the Minnesota Timberwolves which lead people to believe that I’m a good luck charm for Robert. If tonight’s game solidifies that theory, I am still accepting donations to send me to the Finals.
San Antonio 125 – Los Angeles 124
See you next season.
