so who's winning this?

I would have said Murray two weeks ago but Federer's game against Djokovic in Cincinnati was really impressive. He hasn't played this well since last year (during the us open). Nadal doesn't seem to be at 100% but we never know with him. And Djokovic is playing great this year (he did fail badly during the last 2 gran slams though).

Let's not forget about Roddick, Del Potro and Tsonga (homer pick :D)

Roddick lost against Isner. Bit disappointing I think, after Roddick seemed to be in such great shape most of this season.

Federer survived a subpar outing against Hewitt. He will definitely have to play better in order to get Nr. 6 here.

Security in Tennis is a joke. Federer had to deal with that nut-job that came down from the stands at the French Open and now this guy that approached Nadal. Of course we all remember, years ago Seles getting stabbed by that psycho Steffi Graf fan, beef up security already..

Good Match with Fed/Soderling, really picked up after the first 2 one sided sets. Fed/Djokivic will be good, should be Fed/Nadal in the final..

quentin_compson
09-10-2009, 05:03 AM
The first two sets of Nadal - Monfils were great, but unfortunately, the Frenchman ran out of gas after that.

Federer - Djokovic could be interesting, but I somehow doubt that Djokovic will really be able to put Roger under pressure.

The other SF will probably be Nadal - del Potro.

DAF86
09-10-2009, 05:39 AM
Nadal seems to have some kind of mental hold on Federer. He just doesn't play the same brand of tennis against him.

I think is more of a matchup problem than a mental thing.

Nadal beign lefty and having that sick top-spin forehand is IMO what most bothers Fed, 'cause the shot that is most difficult for the Swiss to hit is the high backhand. And the shot that comes more naturaly for Nadal to use is that crosscourt top-spin forehand to the righties' backhand.

quentin_compson
09-10-2009, 05:45 PM
Good game by del Potro after a slow start. He should be able to really challenge Nadal in the SF.

Tennis should always be played indoors. No rain delays and no heat and/or wind to affect a player's stamina and/or performance. Usually the quality of play is better when this sport its played under a roof.

As someone who played Tennis in high school and College, yeah i loved playing indoors, the quality of play is better, that said Tennis gets enough shit by morons that don't think it's a legit sport. Take the weather elements out of, it would only make that worse..

I don't know if this works as a consolation for you, but I think that's mainly a US thing. In the rest of the world Tennis is equal or more important than golf. Here in South America Tennis gets 100 times more press than golf and in the UK Tennis is huge (see Murray's ridiculous hype).

See, that's what I'm talking about, I think that only in the US golf is more important than Tennis. When Cabrera won the Masters, the headlines of all sports papers and magazines here in Argentina was a victory of Del Potro over Nadal in the quarters of a Masters series. That's how much bigger than golf tennis is down here.

Here in Germany, tennis used to be quite popular too. But that was when we had Becker and Stich, not to forget Steffi Graf, maybe the best female tennis player ever.
Right now, there are only scrubs like Haas or Kohlschreiber.

His knees are still sore. And in his match against Fernandez he was grimacing with abdominal pains. You can see it when he serves as he doesn't bend his knees too much and just settles for serves that get in instead of going for possible aces.

I think it's cool that some of the sports invincibles have shown a little chink in their armor. First Tiger in the PGA championship choking away a 54 hole lead and now Federer allowing himself to get frustrated in a Grand Slam final. It brings them down to earth a little bit. And it shows that even the greats aren't perfect.
