Suspension likely for Stackhouse after Saturday-night fight
03:51 AM CDT on Monday, April 11, 2005

By DAVID MOORE / The Dallas Morning News

The Mavericks closed ranks around Jerry Stackhouse and braced for the suspension that is likely to be handed down before tonight's game with Memphis.

Stackhouse and Utah's Kirk Snyder came to blows in the tunnel that leads to the players' parking lot nearly 30 minutes after the conclusion of Saturday night's game. Mavericks officials sidestepped the issue after Sunday's practice, saying they were still gathering information on what happened. But the NBA office has been notified, and league officials customarily respond before another game is played.

Suspension likely for Stackhouse after Saturday-night fight

No one with the Mavericks wanted to use the "S" word. But in the aftermath of the brawl in Detroit earlier this season, a fight in front of family, friends and the fans who stood in the corridor of American Airlines Center hoping for autographs is expected to earn suspensions for both players.

Forward Dirk Nowitzki said he was sure the "league will do something, and we all have to live with it." He said it's a distraction the Mavericks don't need this close to the playoffs but added that everyone needs to move on.

"Because mistakes were made, repercussions have to take place," guard Michael Finley said.

"We just have to deal with it."

When asked about the confrontation, Mavericks coach Avery Johnson said little more than, "nobody really likes that kind of stuff." Owner Mark Cuban worked to minimize the perception of the incident.

"It was more of a cat fight than a fight," Cuban said. "It was more like the Miller Lite girls."

Initial reports from security officers and Mavericks officials indicate it was more serious. Stackhouse and Snyder were involved in several physical sequences during the game but no flagrant or technical fouls were called. Stackhouse was talking to his wife after the game when Snyder walked by on his way to the Jazz bus, and the two quickly came to blows.

There are reports that the fight lasted up to 40 seconds, that Stackhouse threw Snyder to the concrete floor at one point and that the Utah rookie was bleeding. Finley and Josh Howard escorted Stackhouse back to the locker room.

Two weeks ago, Snyder was removed from a game because he taunted the Houston bench after a dunk.

Stackhouse was told not to talk to the media by the PR staff.

"He felt bad," Finley said. "He felt as if he's affected the team. He's definitely a team guy. He never wants to take attention away from the team or become a distraction."

Classic Cuban!! This is great. I'm happy to see any distraction for any other team especially this late in the game. As usual the Spurs are under the media radar and moving towards #1. Let's see if Phoenix does something stupid to turn up the media heat on themselves?

Expect Stackhouse to get a long-term contract after this year. He sounds like he fits right in with Mark Cuban's "My Fantasy Fairy League".

Wow, these opinions are one sided...Stackhouse was just talking to his wife about to leave, when Snyder (a rookie, though I don't expect lots of you to know that there are players on teams OTHER than the Spurs) probably mouthed off to him again like he had been the entire game. Snyder has already been in trouble with the league, been suspended by his own coach, and gotten in in-game confrontations. Yet you all assume the worst of Stackhouse who has been a model citizen in Dallas.

What is to assume....he got rough with Ginobili then with Snyder whom he headed toward his locker room to confront. No assumptions there....the only assumption is yours on Stackhouse's innocence. You call out Spurs fans for assuming he is guilty then you assume he is innocent. double standard?

Oh and sweetie, I have forgotten more about the NBA and its players than you will ever learn, as have most people here....you want to get into a pissing contest about knowledge of NBA players?...bring it.

He hasn't always, though, Adrienne. Looks like he's reverting to type. I don't dislike him because he's a Mav. I've pretty much always disliked him, although I respect his game, for the most part.

Stack is a punk thug - point blank. The shit he pulled in Dallas the other night was complete BS. This is what you call "patterned behavior" - there is a reason he cant stay on a roster longer than a few seasons.....

I got the "pleasure" of watching Stackhouse destroy the Wizards' locker room over the past few years.

Having said that, Synder has a bit of a history, especially for a rookie. Also I find it hard to believe Stack would start something in front of his own wife. I'm willing to give him the benefit of a doubt on this one.

Idiots. Your "thug" Spurs were throwing all kinds of elbows (particulary Barry) when they got stomped by the Mavs, but I don't see any of you shmucks talking about that. I don't blame the Spurs though. You got raped harder than if 12 Kobes were coming at you. I can see why the Spurs would resort to 12 year old tactics and start crying over it.

Snyder is a punk. He deserved to get beat down. Only a couple of you have pointed out his past. I'd expect the rest of you Ginobili loving cretins to ignore the truth. After all, you all think the Spurs are good. That shows how much you know.

The funniest story I have heard about Stackhouse was that in his second year, he made it a point to tell reporters that Jordan was "a step slower" than he used to be and "not as dominant" The funny thing is that Dean Smith heard that comment and called MJ and simply said "Tar Heels do not do that to other Tar Heels" MJ went out and hung 50 on him that night.

Having the league pass, I have seen a few Jazz games and that Snyder kid is one tough mutha. He is a Jerry Sloan type player and doesn't back down to anyone. In many ways, he reminds of Mario Elie. He plays physical and is very vocal on the floor.

I hate Stackhouse and Nowitskiaiosdfhka or whatever. Stackhouse is just a thug with a bad attitude. Anyone who picks a fight with Manu is just ridiculous because Manu's a very classy guy. Nowitasjkfkdsdf just acts like he's all that all the time. Hold's his head up when playing Duncan, thinks the refs should baby him, its just ridiculous. I get so mad when Duncan looks at the refs when I know he fouled. Good thing he doesn't do it all the time.

It's like.....Michael Stackhouse or Jerry Finley

isn't it funny how the mavs have like 5 of the EXACT same players just at different heights and skin colors

i swear i have forgotten that they have Jason Terry on their team like every time i see them on TV, then i remember.

The mavs can deal without him. They have many other players that can do exactly what he does but with less dunk potential.

Jazz: League suspends Snyder one game for fight in Dallas
By Steve Luhm
The Salt Lake Tribune

Jazz rookie Kirk Snyder has been suspended one game by the NBA for his part in an altercation Sunday night at Dallas.
Snyder will not play tonight, when the Jazz play the Clippers in Los Angeles (8:30 p.m. MDT).
Following Utah's 88-81 loss at Dallas, Snyder was involved in a fistfight with the Mavericks' Jerry Stackhouse in the loading dock area of American Airlines Arena. The altercation lasted about 40 seconds before being broken up by Dallas police and security guards.
Jazz officials were surprised by the suspension of Snyder, who believe his claim he was attacked by Stackhouse.
"I just think it's unfair," coach Jerry Sloan said. "Kirk didn't precipitate anything, and a guy should have a right to defend himself."
Utah's Kris Humphries, who was walking to the team bus with Snyder, supported his version of the incident. Other Jazz players who saw the fight said the same thing, according to Sloan.
Still, Snyder and Stackhouse received identical penalties from NBA senior vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson, who ordered the one-game suspensions at 3 p.m. Monday.
The Jazz already had left for Los Angeles when the suspensions were announced. Snyder was unavailable for comment. His agent, Jerome Lewis, did not return phone calls.
According to Jazz vice president of basketball operations Kevin O'Connor, team officials investigated Snyder's role in the incident and decided not to suspend him. That is a clear indication they thought Stackhouse had been the aggressor.
"Based on the information we got from our players," O'Connor said, "we took no punitive action against Kirk. The league suspended Kirk Snyder. The Utah Jazz did not."
Before the Jazz practiced on Monday morning in Salt Lake, Sloan said, "From what Kirk told me and Kris told me, I'm not going to do anything. I don't think he was responsible for what happened. I can't suspend a player for protecting himself."
Two weeks ago, Sloan unofficially suspended Snyder for one game for unsportsmanlike behavior after the rookie taunted the Houston bench following an acrobatic layup. Two nights later, Snyder dressed but did not play in a Jazz-Denver game at the Delta Center.
This situation, Sloan believes, was different.
"It was an incident, I don't think, that Kirk was responsible for," the Jazz coach said. "They may have said something to each other [during the game], but we all know you can't carry it out of the building with you."
O'Connor agreed: "From our point of view and from what we understand . . . Kirk was not the person who started" the fistfight.
Snyder talked briefly to the media before being pulled aside and placed off-limits by Sloan and O'Connor, who did not want him to comment before the NBA completed its investigation.
Asked what happened, Snyder said he was walking toward the Jazz's bus and talking to another player - presumably Humphries

- when he saw Stackhouse coming toward him.
"Some people were holding him back," Snyder said. "[But] he grabbed hold of me and let it go right there."
Snyder believes Stackhouse had waited for him.
"Definitely," he said. "He was wearing his sweats and gym shoes. . . . There's no other way to the bus."
Immediately after the incident, Stackhouse reportedly told Mavericks owner Mark Cuban that he acted in self-defense, which made Snyder smile.
"Definitely not," he said. "I think I was defending myself."
Snyder, who will forfeit $15,800 in salary because of the one-game suspension, claims it was the first time he's been involved in a fight of any kind "since grade school."
At that point in the interview, Sloan poked his head out the door of the locker room at the Jazz's training facility. He apologized for interrupting but called Snyder inside.
A few minutes later, O'Connor emerged and told the media that Snyder - as well as any other player - would not be allowed to continue discussing the incident until the NBA had finished investigating.
