What's the greater crime? choking Tila Tequila? or dating her in the first place?

I vote the latter

Thread would have been cooler if you titled it "Merriman choked a bitch"

You (http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2009/sep/06/bn06merriman-arrested/?chargers) have (http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2009/09/06/shawne-merriman-busted-for-battery-false-imprisonment/) this (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=4450962) weird (http://www.ksat.com/sports/20760824/detail.html) hatred (http://www.cnn.com/2009/CRIME/09/06/merriman.arrest/index.html) of (http://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local-beat/Merriman-Arrested-for-Allegedly-Choking-Tila-Tequila--57607562.html) the (http://www.10news.com/news/20760784/detail.html) media (http://deadspin.com/5353678/shawne-merriman-knows-how-to-beat-a-lady).

And only one of those is an AP version (KSAT). MSNBC, FoxNews, FoxSports and Yahoo! Sports all had AP versions, too.

I don't call that sweeping it under the rug.

Even the NFL says STFU, T Park. (http://www.nfl.com/news/story?id=09000d5d8126bbe6&template=without-video&confirm=true)

I'm more disappointed that FoxSports and Y! Sports doesn't have their own stuff on it, to tell you the truth.

Actually I get what EricB is saying.. he got suspended for using steroids, yet he isn't vilified like the MLB guys. He gets glorified for being this great pass rusher, but he cheated. You take steroids in MLB and you're a cheater. You take steroids in NFL and no one mentions it.

Actually, T Park was talking this incident. It's what he does.

Have the media essentially ignored steroids in the NFL since Lyle Alzado? No doubt. I almost hate to say it, but people expect their NFLers to be on something doing what they do. Baseball's always had this aura surrounding it where people expected athletes to be gentlemen and do the right thing and play the right way, so the collective conscious has allowed the media to over-emphasize its impact in MLB now because of their failings in the earlier part of the era.

Oh, and I hear CNN in the background talking about Shawne Merriman's arrest. Some sweeping.

I jump in on these arguments because the media has its failings (and I'm part of the media, too), but call them out on those, don't call them out on something that has far less precedence.

I understand that he was talking about this incident, but it has happened in the past where ESPN sweeps things under the rug, like the example I gave about the steroids.

Some of these NFL players are so fucking stupid. They get paid millions and millions of dollars to play a fucking game and what do they do? Kill dogs, shoot themselves in the leg and choke their girlfriends.

But again, way to jump on the offensive there about the media and its supposed "fairness"

When did they do steroids?

JamStone
09-07-2009, 01:19 PM
I think pro athletes get vilified when they are jackasses and lie. Giambi and Pettitte "came clean" with their steroids use, or at least didn't go around doing the "I absolutely and unequivocally never took steroids" song and dance. And, while they were reported on, in both of those cases, it stopped being newsworthy once they apologized publicly. But, guys like Bonds and Clemens and Palmeiro and Sosa and A-Rod, they publicly went on the defensive to deny the claims. Once they were proven to have lied, that's where they really get bashed.

NFL players don't really deny taking steroids when they are alleged or implicated. That's why we accept that they do it. A lot of the MLB players who are implicated go out of their way to try to deny it, and so when it's found out that they did it, they look like complete jackasses. That's more newsworthy to the media for some reason.
