View Full Version : reset a router

got a router with a few schedules set-up for different computers (Access Control). Was wondering if someone resets the router, if all that setup would be lost.
Also, if reset is done, does that get rid of my administrator pw?
the router is in plain sight for anyone to push reset. At least one person here is complaining about his machine cutting off web access at 10:30pm (school nights, my son)
Yes it would loose all of those settings if it was hard reset.

doesn't seem very secure. what's the point of having a router pw then?

You shouldn't have to secure your router from people within your home that have physical access to the router, the password is to protect your network from external threats.
In instances where there is a concern about local physical threats, network equipment is typically located in areas with limited accessability (Locked rooms).
If you're concerned about your son resetting your router I have two thoughts:
1. That's great that your kid is so knowledgeable about networks (If he is in fact).
2. You need to work on your parenting a lot more than worry about a router.
I don't have to setup a schedule for my kids, I simply tell them when they are or aren't allowed to do things and the listen, because they know there will be consequences otherwise and it's pretty likely that whatever they are doing won't be worth the reprecussions.

dude all you need to do is set a key for that MAC ADDRESS
so they dont need to put in that key pw all the time when using the net...

nobody has to put in a key or pw to access anything. Internet works on all 5 machines here without anyone having to do anything.
I'm not worried about my son, he was just an example of a schedule I have. Tonight I put a sched on my wife's laptop, to cut off during early AM hours, say 2:30 to 4:30am. She doesn't work, so she stays up lots of nights on FB, MS, and all that other crap... :depressed :sleep
when she notices the internet "goes out" every night... she'll be pissed if she figures out I did something. I'm sure one of her comptuer savvy buddies will tell her what to do or check.

i see so you either wanna throttle speeds or ban certain sites at that time, cause they are wasting bandwidth....umm

no, I was just wondering if resetting the router gets rid of all the setup I have done on it.
If someone resets it, will my "schedules" still be entered in the router, even if they are removed from whatever machine they were on?
seems like a hassle to have to re-enter times and schedules if that happens. It's no big deal to re-add the existing schedules to machines though, that is if a reset does not actually delete entered schedules.

No you got it all wrong.
What he wants to do is control people with a piece of electronics instead of talking to them.
He'd rather block his son instead of simply saying to him: No internet access after 10:30 and I want you in bed by 11:30 (Or whatever).
Meanwhile his stay at home wife is staying up until all times of the night on the internet (and probably sleeping all day) and rather than tell her that he doesn't think she should be doing that, again he's using his router to do his dirty work.

Why the fuck would you restrict your wife's access?
And yes, resetting the router would erase all the settings. I'm emailing your wife to tell her how to do it.

yes if you hard reset the router, which is holding that black button in the back for 10 secs and it resets the whole thing...
dont banned ur wife from those time man, cause thats the time im able to chat to her since im gmt-10+ hahahahhaaha just kidding man
i doubt ur child/wife knows shit about comps, just block one of the ports and port forwarding off :D
or you can tell them the ISP has banned certain sites or someshit....

Uh.
A router not working the way you want it to is the least of your problems.

Why the fuck would you restrict your wife's access?my wife hasn't worked in almost 2 years, pays absolutely no bills, helps financially with nothing in the house, and meanwhile, since she doesn't have anything to do anymore, she is having multiple affairs. yes, divorce has been decided. Why the fuck should I pay for her internet access for her to be up all night chatting with her BFs and being a general slut.

wrong-o. Son & I had a nice talk back before school started, and we agreed upon the 10:30 time together. I never said I was worried about my son.
A router not working the way you want it to is the least of your problemsyeah I know, once again, divorce is coming. I want her out of the house.

Then block her the whole fucking time, why only block her at 2am?

Then block her the whole fucking time, why only block her at 2am?:lol Yeah, I thought of that when I was typing my last post... one way to get her out of the house.
this all went downhill fast when she became unemployed. What's the old saying.. "Idle minds are the devil's playground..." or something.
but I don't want to agravate the situation any more... I'm hoping an uncontested divorce ("buy-out") can be done. Don't want to stir the pot beforehand.
:lol Yeah, I thought of that when I was typing my last post... one way to get her out of the house.
Put a virus on her computer when she's asleep..

First, this thread sounds fun.
Second, backup your configuration if possible, so you can just re-load it after the reset.
Third, try disabling the reset button altogether, or assigning another function to it.
Fourth, if your router's firmware doesn't offer these options, look into alternative firmware.
Fifth, put the router in a safe... with holes for the cables.
I'm out of ordinals.
Third, try disabling the reset button altogether, or assigning another function to it.
You bring up a good point for someone handy with electronics and possibly a soldering iron.
If you wanted to, and you aren't able to secure the router in a locked bedroom, you could consider disabling the reset button physically which would mean opening the router, and desoldering the button, or at least one of its connections.
I wouldn't put it in a safe unless it had adequate ventilation.

:lol thanks for all the info. I'm not gonna worry about it anymore.
actually, I have a gun safe right near the router. do wireless routers work inside a steel gun safe? (I'm not going to do it, just wondering).
