View Full Version : Internet Issue

I've been having an internet issue for the past year or so where my connection slows down and or stops loading pages. Now I'm not that tech savvy but I'm a fast learner. A friend suggested I run a ping every time I see this starting to happen so I did. I ran a "ping www.yahoo.com -t" on the command prompt screen just to see how often it would time out. Well to my surprise when I started having this problem it seemed there were more time outs than replies. Now I've contacted my cable provider-Road Runner- and they've changed my modem about 7 times already the last time being this past weekend along with the cable wiring in my house and yet the problem persists.

I have a belkin n wireless router and only a desktop connected to it with the laptop using the wireless connection. When my connection begins to have problems it affects both so I'm sure it's not just one pc or a browser. I've started to wonder if maybe I had some kind of virus or something because frankly I've talked to my provider hundreds of times literally with endless appointments that end up turning into nothing because when they come over my connection seems fine, but as soon as they leave or later on during the day the time outs begin and my speed decreases to less than dial-up. I went almost all of april with this kind of service with most of the time just didn't work.

A tech suggested maybe there was a broken line in my area or someone was stealing bandwidth. The dude said he would find out, that was about 2 months ago.

I'm posting this maybe with the hopes that somebody might know what it is and I could fix it if it's on my end or something greater with my area connection.

This is a ping I'm currently running. It takes me forever to post or load a page right now.

So your desktop is connected via Ethernet and your laptop via WIFI and both exhibit the same symptoms?

Do the symptoms continue if the disconnect the router for a few seconds, reconnect it, and wait for your laptop to reconnect to the WIFI?

either call the tech support of ur isp

check ur line filters
do a line test without the filter,
then try it with filter, do line test,
add any other filters if you have other fax machine/phone etc and check line test..

or powercycle <<< which is turn off modem power, disconnect the modem from phone socket, and wait for 5-10mins, then reconnect....the node that ur line is connected to will reset itself....and repeat steps check line filter above....

if ur line is new, i would expect there to be no problems...unless ur on old shitty copper wires hooked up to ur home...

then again if you have cable isp, it depends on other ppl who live on ur street who have the same connection from the same isp....

You never mentioned what virus software you use, and if both PC's have it. And are both PC's vista or XP? Find someone with a laptop and have them stop by and get a 3rd opinion.

Why would the roadrunner guys change out so many modems w/o doing their own virus scan? I see PC's all day long with Norton and Mcafee and they are infected with a shit load of spyware.

unless you get that 3rd notebook or do a fresh windows install you will always be wondering what it can be. Use the process of elimination or else you will be always in the dark.

If you live in apartments? I found out my apartments share one huge HUB and depending on how many of us in the apartments have Time warner and are online at the same time determines how fast our signal is. Take your laptop somewhere that has a good signal and eliminate the possibilities. Narrow down the problem. My money is on you have a Trojan/spyware dialer. Pages don't take that long to load up even with dial up.

Get rid of your out dated virus software, grow a pair of balls and turn off you firewalls they don't really work just slow shit down and get online with a fresh copy of XP it's the only other way if you decide not to do what I already suggested.

Good Luck! :wakeup

Yeah, I always power cycle the modem and router and even pc and If it still is happening I just connect desktop directly to router just to make sure it's not router but the problem persists. I also clear cookies and flush the dns.

I have cable internet from time warner and the line box for the block is right on my backyard, I've gone to open it several times to see if there's anything odd in it, but I rather not touch the stuff in fear of being seen by my nosy neighbors.

Done all that, yet this is what my connection did overnight by just leaving a ping running. It does this every week at least a day or two. Starts some time after 6pm or even earlier and just go on through the night. I'm lucky right now It's letting me load pages, though very slow.

Ping statistics for 209.191.93.52:

A cable guy once told me someone could be using a radio that is interfering with the lines. I never understood what he meant until I looked up what a line filter was. And yes, they have come by on other occasions to fix my noise levels which they fixed apparently after several attempts. That's one of the problems fixed. Last night the lady I was talking to from Road Runner said my connection looked fine, It was just that my line was not picking up an I.P. address. So I told her about the ping and the packet loss and I guess she ran another kind of test and saw that problem now.

Yeah, that's what I started to suspect last night, that I might have some type of virus and I was about to install xp again. I use avast anti-virus, so I don't know if it could be a shitty Anti-virus program or not. Though this problem happens too if a friend tries to use the internet when I'm having the problem.
The pc and the xp aren't that old either, my brother helped me build it in march, he used to live here and would happen to his pc that was connected to the router as well. He recently moved out and has his pc over at his place with Road runner and it hasn't done it to him, so I've ruled out he has any sort of virus.

and just like that, my connection picked up speed 5 minutes ago... Had laptop hooked up to modem and it was running a ping with a lot of timing out then it suddenly started to just reply and no time outs so i switch the direct connection to desktop and yes it stopped here too... so now my internet is working fast again.. weird..

Mouse: NOT EVERY PC PROBLEM IS A FUCKING VIRUS! FUCK!

The hardest thing to fix is an intermittent problem, or at least that's the hardest thing for the idiots from Time Warner to fix.

You really shouldn't have let them replace your modem seven times, once or twice I can understand, but seven times is a waste of your time and their time.

Has this problem ever been kicked up to someone higher than the regular techs that come out?

What's really happening is somewhere down the line, most likely somewhere else and even possibly miles from your home something is wrong, and a standard tech will probably never be able to fix it and it needs to get kicked up to whatever positions is above the standard tech that comes to your home. That person needs to keep a ping running on your line so they can diagnose where the problem is.

If they replaced the modem seven times it's obvious they came to the conclusion that the problem is not within your home, including your router and computers since they are able to check the levels in various places, I'm sure they could see your levels were off.

I bet your on demand doesn't work either when this happens, which would mean you have a problem with your reverse signal.

What you especially need to do is start getting credits for the service since it's not working for you as it should.

but isnt the problem with cable is that whoever on the same street also have cable with the same ISP, also uses the same cable wire? as compared to ADSL, where each house has its own individual node...

If you guys think it's a bad hop or problems down the line use:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314868

Also, try using wireshark to capture some data packets to see if there are any tcp/ip reconnects. If you have a tech come out maybe a couple of packet sniffs might be enuff for him to troubleshoot.

possible bad modem, time warner is notorious for refurbed crap and dead modems! or possibly a bad router.

yeah, this problem got escalated back in early May because I went almost all of april with technically slow to non-existing service. I've been credited so much that I can't recall when I've actually made a full payment. I think I've only paid January and May of this year. They're losing money by crediting my account and sending techs who find nothing wrong in my house. I've been lucky that at least 2 techs have caught the problem and that's when they escalate it to something else like a maintenance.

The tech before last had a maintenance setup for my area to fix my noise levels or something like that because apparently mine was too low. Another tech suggested that it might be someone with a radio jamming it up(I somewhat don't have a clue about this), then last guy said someone might be stealing bandwidth or a line is broken somewhere. In may they came and replaced equipment in my area apparently because it was dipped in puddles of water underground and some of my neighbors were having the same problem and no internet phone either.

This morning when I was replying to the posters on this thread my service just picked up around 8:30 and was fluctuating all morning.. until it stabalized around noon and it just hasn't faltered... yet.

Modem changed seven times, and I unplugged router to connect directly just to make sure it's not my home network. Only thing I go by is by running a ping all day and when I start to notice the decrease in speed or pages not loading I have the command prompt running in the background starting to show time outs from pinging a website like google.

Been running this ping all day. If the tech came and saw this, I know i'm shit out of luck again because he will explain to me he cant do anything if there is not a problem.

I don't have time to read everything but I don't see where you mentioned if you live in a house or an apartment. Did you ask your tech friend about how some apartments online traffic bottle necks? And I didn't see where you had your friends with fast laptop's come by and check out your online speed. I would have switched to DSL already.

Sorry but I use my own process of elimination even if it makes PM5K's panties get all wadded up.

I do a virus flush and then a spyware flush. Then I use a router/modem I know is good and connect it to the DSL or cable. after I find out if the signal is good or not I know to go after the PC, or go after the IP service provider.

I know my theories and technics are old and out dated but they work for me, And I will continue to use them no matter how many PM5K's I piss off in the process.

Go outside and try to pick up a neighbor's signal so you know its not your laptop.

Well you seem to know more than this wild card manu vato, his friends, time warner, and Google. What I don't get is why they would resort to pulling out "your signal is being jammed" card if he can just connect directly to the modem w/o using the wireless.

and eliminate that theory. Further more why wouldn't this wild card manu vato post the download speeds of his friends PC and his PC so we can see the results?

And why would anyone tell him DSL is not available when all you need is a phone line, where does this vato live, the south pole?

I think they were probably talking about something like EMI somehow interfering with the signal before it even gets to his house.

He's just got a problem with his reverse signal, a good way to check is to see if your cable still works fine but on demand won't.

Maybe he doesn't have any friends he can ask, not everyone is as friendly as mouse.

Yep.

I SERIOUSLY doubt it's a virus. I'm not going to say it's definitely not, but I don't get the feel that it's a virus.

Sigh. I'll get crucified for suggesting, but if you formatted one computer you would DEFINITELY eliminate the problem of whether it's a virus or not, unless it's all the way into your BIOS. Then you could find out if it's exclusively a hardware problem.

Sounds like hardware though, since it's on multiple computers.
