The 'least favorite' bands made me think of this thread...
What are the bands that you don't consider a 'favorite', and you don't hear listed as 'favorites' often, yet you like a good amount of their songs? Also, they have to be somewhat popular... they can't be underrated if the general public doesn't know about them.
1) CCR
2) Goo Goo Dolls (flame away)
3) Blink 182 (again, flame away)
4) Offspring
5) De La Soul

Eh, I don't know too many people who would claim any of those bands as "favorite". Maybe I'm wrong though.

Commercially, TV on the Radio is underrated, but critically they've been hailed as one of the most important bands of this generation.

Explosions in the Sky, Sigur RosEitS is great. Love their stuff. Sigur Ros is good but almost too hipster for my taste.

I feel like a band that should be bigger is Tool. Yeah they're big but they're one of only a few true rock/metal bands that are halfway decent. I'd say they're underrated.

Dredg
Parabelle (former Evans Blue singer - there were only like 20 people at their show at Scout Bar)
Sponge (well, their first two albums anyway)
Stabbing Westward
Full Devil Jacket (their whole 1 album & EP)
I used to think Godsmack was severly underrated, too, in '98, Staind was underrated in '99, Creed was underrated in '98... maybe it's a good thing these bands stay underrated :lol
And I do listen to older rock as well but I can't really comment on that because it was a bit before my time so I'd have no way of knowing whether they got their due props in their heyday.

No longer a band, but Temple Of The Dog has one of the most amazing albums of the "grunge" area, but is largely overlooked despite the band being comprised of Pearl Jam and fronted by Chris Cornell, because they were a blues-based hard rock outfit in a time when such just wasn't popular. I would put up the self-titled album up against any hard rock, metal, alternative album of its day. They are just that good, and you never hear anything about that album.

Counting Crows.
Mr. Jones may be a staple on the jukebox at your local college bar, but Adam Duritz and the rest of the fellas have an AMAZING catalog of music that, unfortunately, not many seem to recognize.

3) Counting Crows - Mr. Jones is typically the only song people know from this band. And that's a shame.

I don't think CCR is underrated. They are pretty popular around here. However, those other groups deserve less. Power chord playing pussies. I mean that literally, most of their riffs could be easily played by a person's genitals.

I like their older stuff a lot more than the stuff gettin air time NOWadayz. I'm certainly glad they're gettin some recognition, though. However, that being the case, I can't really call them underrated. Too many pop radio station listeners are busy talking about how they've "liked KoL for a WHILE...ever since 'SEX ON FIRE' came out."

How is Blink underrated when a shitload of people love them? They've had countless videos on all of the popular TV channels(MTV/VH1/ETC.) consistently, and play packed houses everywhere they go, while charging outrageous amounts of money for tickets. I agree with CCR, though. Great choice.
1)Rise Against - Literally 80% of their songs are fantastic, yet most people only know them for "Swing Life Away" -- which, ironically... doesn't even sound like them, and is easily their worst song.
2) The Shins - Nobody would name drop this band if it wasn't for that mediocre movie "Garden State".
3) Counting Crows - Mr. Jones is typically the only song people know from this band. And that's a shame.
4) Jimmy Eat World - Band is genius. Never got half the radio airplay they should have.
5) Trance music as a whole. At least in the US.
Well, I'm 27, so Blink 182 isn't really considered a fave among my friends. Maybe it is with the younger crowd.

No, not at all. The problem I have is that most people tend to focus only on Dark Side of the Moon for Floyd and Stairway to Heaven for Zeppelin, when in reality there are so many more masterpieces that no one pays attention to.
Wish You Were Here is my favorite album ever and I think it's better than Dark Side. I mean, Shine On You Crazy Diamond is such a masterfully written song and each track meshes perfectly with the next. And shit, ending the album with the continuance of the first song is just sick, considering that altogether Shine On is 26 minutes long. And that's not even mention Meddle, which came out before Dark Side. Echoes is probably my favorite or 2nd favorite song by Floyd. 23 minutes and just pure ecstasy for the ears.
As far as Zeppelin goes, most people think of Stairway instantly and that's it. Plus with their whole backwards Satan lyrics, a lot of people are turned off by that. But they have so many amazing songs, on every album. Zeppelin I is one of the best debut albums of all-time. Then you have other songs like Achilles Last Stand which is my favorite song by them, Trampled Underfoot, Battle of Evermore, D'Yer Mak'er, Fool in the Rain, The Rain Song, Going to California, Over the Hills and Far Away, Heartbreaker, Kashmir, The Ocean, Tangerine, When the Levee Breaks, What Is and What Should Never Be, etc...the list goes on and on.
I honestly think people severely underrate their musical abilities and the sheer genius it takes to make so many of those amazing songs. And when I hear people talk about the top bands of all time, I hear a lot of Beatles, Dylan, Rolling Stones, etc, and I honestly think Zepp/Floyd is better than any of them, easily. Stairway to Heaven is probably top 5 best song ever. And I don't think these two bands get enough recognition, Floyd mainly because they get viewed too much as just stoner music. I remember when that Rolling Stones list of the 500 greatest songs of all time came out, the only Pink Floyd song on there was Comfortably Numb, which is amazing in itself but not their best, and that was ranked in the 100s or lower. The number one song, I think, was Can't Get No Satisfaction. You can't ever make me believe that song is better than 90% of Floyd's music.

In doesn't matter if they're getting played on the radio. I'm talking about the average person's opinion.
"Oh you like Pink Floyd? What are you, a stoner?"
"Oh yeah I know Led Zeppelin, Stairway to Heaven man!"
The two most common things you'll hear.

I agree with you about Pink Floyd. Dark Side, while an amazing album, isn't even close to being their best. Animals and Wish You Were Here are better than that. However, I do disagree with you about Zepplin's "talent". They ripped off the entire first album from older blues musicians. They are as overrated a band as it gets.
