A 1-year-old girl from China is waiting to have an operation after doctors discovered she was carrying her parasitic twin.
Kang Mengru left doctors (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548140,00.html?test=latestnews#) baffled after her belly became enlarged.
They carried out a CT scanhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/2.gif (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548140,00.html?test=latestnews#) to discover the cause of the growth and found a fetus inside her. They believe it is her parasitic twin.
While the condition is very rare, Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing editor of health (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548140,00.html?test=latestnews#) at FOXNews.com, said it is possible that's what this child is "carrying."
"There are multiple varieties of parasitic twins," said Alvarez. "In some cases you could have some sort of merging body (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,548140,00.html?test=latestnews#) parts... like an extra leg or sometimes you have an abnormal formation of the head when you have two brains."
In this instance, Alvarez said from looking at a picture of the girl, you can clearly see that it’s a large abdominal mass that could potentially be an embryonic remnant of a lost twin.
"This could be a type of parasitic twin called fetus-in-fetu," he said. "What you find is that you have an encapsulated tumor-like formation inside the body, which contains fetal parts."
Mengru is now waiting for an operation to have the fetus removed.

There's a pretty old special (I'd say early 2000s) on fetus in fetus that Discovery Health/TLC shows every once in a while. It was actually on a few weekends ago. Interesting stuff. Poor kid!

That's why there are quotation marks around pregnant. It's not saying she is really pregnant, but she does have a "fetus" growing inside of her.

Pregnant: having a child or other offspring developing in the body; with child or young, as a woman or female mammal.

I guess some people don't know the definition of pregnant.

No, it makes you look dumb for not knowing what "pregnant" means. It's an interesting story, if you think it's dumb or whatever then don't read it or look at it.

The anomalous phenomenon is known as fetus in fetu. Such incidents are extremely rare: an embryo inside an embryo may appear once in 500,000 pregnancies. The phenomenon always occurs at an early stage of pregnancy. As a rule, the fetuses die in mother’s womb.
It may also happen that a child with a fetus inside survives the entire pregnancy. In this case the embryo continues to live inside its owner’s body like a trapped parasite. A fetus in fetu can be considered alive, but only in the sense that its component tissues have not yet died or been eliminated. Thus, the life of a fetus in fetu is inherently limited to that of an invasive tumor. In principle, its cells must have some degree of normal metabolic activity to have remained viable. However, without the gestational conditions attainable (so far) only in utero with the amnion and placenta, a fetus in fetu can develop into, at best, an especially well-differentiated teratoma; or, at worst, a high-grade metastatic teratocarcinoma. In terms of physical maturation, its organs have a working blood supply from the host, but all cases of fetus in fetu present critical defects, such as no functional brain, heart, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, or urinary tract.

haha, that's what dumb thread starters like you always say. If the story was actually about a 1 year old being PREGNANT then it would be interesting to read about. I read thru it and found out the thread title was a lie just to get people to click on your thread

The thread is about a girl who has another fetus growing inside of her. I don't usually start threads, so why would I care if a person clicks on it or not. I thought it was interesting, and it's rare so I posted it.

There was also a child in Saudia Arabia with the same condition back in November of 2008:

When the mother of this child was pregnant, she had 2 fetuses inside her. But one of the fetus grew inside the other, this why this girl was born with the other fetus inside her womb.”

Although it is an exceptionally rare condition that occurs in approximately 1 in 500,000 pregnancies, the discovery of partially developed embryos inside living human beings is not completely unheard of. In May of 2008, doctors in Greece surgically removed an embryo from a 9-year-old girl's abdomen and in 1999, a 36-year-old Indian man's embryonic twin had grown so large inside his abdominal cavity that it was nearly as large as a full-term baby. Fetus in fetu embryos do not develop as normal pregnancies, but remain as partially-developed fetuses which can become parasitic tumors.ABC News: Bearing Your Own Twin (http://abcnews.go.com/Health/story?id=4866991&page=1Bearing) (May 16, 2008)2 (http://www.mahalo.com/pregnant-one-year-old#cite_note-2)

@ manufan10: I think you could have saved yourself the trouble of adding quotatations to "pregnant" by simply adding a question mark to the of the thread title. That way, you're asking the rhetorical question, "Is she really pregnant or is there a dead twin inside her body?" and people wouldn't criticize you for trying to get more views of this thread. kthxbye.
