It’s been over a year since Kevin Duckworth passed away, but his legacy as a teammate, friend and avid fisherman was on the minds of all who were in attendance for the dedication of the Kevin J. Duckworth Memorial Dock on the banks of the Willamette River south of the Rose Garden.

“We miss Duck,” said Trail Blazers president Larry Miller. “We love him and this is going to be something that is going to allow us to keep his memory going here in the city of Portland.”

On a sunny afternoon befitting the occasion, Kevin Duckworth’s family, his friends, current and former Trail Blazers, members of the Portland city council and fans gathered to witness the formal renaming of the “L” shaped dock on the Vera Katz Esplanade in honor of Duckworth’s contributions to the community.

“A tremendous honor for Kevin and his family and the whole Blazers family to have this dock named after him,” said Jerome Kersey, a longtime friend and teammate of Duckworth. “I know he’s smiling down from heaven and saying ‘Ya’ll did this for me?’ It’s a great day, a beautiful day to be celebrating this. Here’s to you big Duck. It’s your dock baby”

City commissioner Dan Saltzman, who played a key role in having the dock renamed after Duckworth, was on deck to show Portland’s appreciation for the man known lovingly as “Duck.”

‘It’s an honor on behalf of the city of Portland to participate in this dedication of the Kevin Duckworth Memorial Dock,” said Saltzman. “I was happy to bring the ordinance before the city council to designate this dock and to name it after Kevin Duckworth.

“I admired Kevin as a basketball player, but I really got to appreciate who he was unfortunately after he passed. I always knew he was a great stalwart of the community but when I learned more about his passion to Portland and to Oregon and his passions for the outdoors and fishing, in our search for an appropriate way to honor him it only became natural to think of this dock.”

Located on the east side of the Willamette in between the Steel and Hawthorne bridges, the dock is a popular place for Portlanders to fish and tie up their boats. Since Duckworth was a fishing and boating enthusiast, renaming of the dock in his honor was a fitting tribute.

“This dock will forever bear Kevin Duckworth’s name and it’s a fitting memorial to someone who appreciated fishing and the outdoors,” said Saltzman. “Fishermen who are out here catching sturgeon or spring Chinook will always think about Kevin, who will probably be dropping a line from the sky to join them.”
