Depends how cold it is outside... Or if you want to lower your sperm count...etc.

You should investigate going solar. Pool heating is probably the easiest solar application there is because of the relative low temperatures. It's got a 2-3 year payout compared to heating with a conventional heater...

I'm too hot to have to add heat to my pool. ;)

Seriously, I've heard a heater only extends your season by about a month. So it depends on how much you use it; my pool is closing up this weekend.

I'm planning to build a 8' X 12' hot tub at the ranch...I will probably put about 150sq ft of solar collectors and then a small wood burning supplementary heater in the loop. Nothing like playing around in a steaming hot tub when it's cold outside...

True that!

The combination would be quite...

Now that would be some serious shrinkage.

An inground pool with a cover does not cost too much to heat. Mine runs about $70/month for gas during the summer. In the winter I still run the filter and keep the heater set to around 60 degrees...too cold to swim, but warm enough to prevent the pipes from freezing. I've had limited success winterizing my pool, and so keeping it running tends to be cheaper than spring spending to get things running again.

I have a pool with a heater. And it stays off....permanetly. It is way too expensive to heat a pool in the winter with a gas heater.
