The side benefit of this "tanking" philosophy was not risking further injury. If you are able to play... you play. But in this case, by not playing him the spurs gave him more recovery time thus not risking further injury. Robinson said in an interview years later that he could have played. I think the motivation for the FO was two fold. Insurance for David and higher probibility in the lottery. When the latter is involved and you dont play a player that is capable of playing... that in my and others opinions is tanking.
