BYU knocks off OU.....then gets raped by FSU......who then loses to USF today. Cal? WTF?..........Oregon gets smoked by Boise St.............Cal looks amazing, only to get their asses handed to them convincingly. USC?? ......takes out OSU, then gets beat by Washington? Good lord.............who is worthy? Texas? Florida, Bama?

That argument is tired Vander. If there was a playoff your team would actually have a legit chance to play for a national championship, and well they should. To say a playoff would take the steam out of the regular season is horseshit. College football is built on tradition and rivalries, which will ensure that the regular season always matters. We need a playoff system badly, as well as the banning of all polls until October.

how would you do it with a playoffs? how many teams get in? how do you decide which ones?
there are too many teams with drastically different strength of schedules to just throw the best records into a playoffs, or the conference champions into a playoffs, there's no way to do it without the BCS.

so you would advocate a playoffs on top of the BCS, that I guess would be OK, but the people that hate the BCS don't have any clue about what College Football would be with any other alternative
I'd be fine with a +1, but that's about it, you can't have USC losing to Washington or Oklahoma losing to BYU and still getting a shot at the Title, that ruins the regular season completely.
And BSU has no business in a title game, they will most likely get destroyed in the fiesta bowl this year.
if BSU wants to make the Title game, they have to either schedule tougher OoC, or ditch the WAC, but when you can almost make the Fiesta Bowl by default and you know your team isn't close to a Florida or Texas or USC, why do that?
If BYU would have beaten FSU, and gone undefeated, they would have most likely made the title game this year, the BSC works even for the little guy, in BSU's case, it favor's tje little guy.
you have to get over your fear of some possibly-deserving team not making the title game, a playoff won't really help crown a more deserving Champion, look at the NFL: how often does the "best team" really win it all? NY wasn't Better than the Pats, and the Pats weren't better than the Rams a few years earlier. the NFL playoffs is almost a crapshoot, and you can get into the crapshoot with an 8-8 record, THAT is the system that needs to be fixed, not the BCS

I will always agree that a playoff is needed in college football...but not because of what happened this past weekend. Ole Miss, Penn State, Cal and Miami all lost because they're overhyped and haven't played any decent competition until last weekend. It'll be interesting to see how these teams finish out the rest of the season now that they've been brought back down to Earth (especially Miami). I'm ashamed of myself for drinking the Miami/Jacory Harris Kool-Aid. They played a good defense for once and got smashed.

bad reasoning, if there were 8 undefeated powerhouses and the top 10 had stayed the same all season it would be even more of an argument for a playoff

Your argument will never hold water because FBS college football is exactly like any other sport or football league, college or not. No one has ever come up with a good argument as to why college football should not have a playoff like all other sports. And we are talking about hundreds of other events world wide. no it only means that GS rose up and beat Dallas in that series, no different than Washington rising up and beating USC, Dallas and USC were still the better teams.
IMO GS shouldn't have made the playoffs anyways, the NBA and College Basketball are shining examples of boring, meaningless regular seasons. In the NBA, teams that fight for a playoff spot over the last month of the regular season are not going to win the title anyways, and in the rare fluke occurrence that they did, they wouldn't have deserved it, they did not prove themselves worthy through the regular season. the NBA needs to cut the playoff field in half, or at least shave off 4 teams and do the bye week thing like the NFL.

and that point aside, all other sporting events are not college football, college football is a very different beast on many levels, the amount of teams, games, players, money, disparity, etc in college football all make for a unique sport with unique demands of its champion-crowning system

nope, the regular season would lose a lot of interest, people would just wait until the playoffs like they do with those sports you mention there.
oh and all teams have a chance, the BCS does a great job factoring in SoS, if you schedule the big time programs, you'll have a chance at the title.
and a Cinderella team in Football is much different than, say, basketball, where one single recruit like Morrison or Curry can put you in serious contention.
In college football, teams are 50 athletes deep, and teams like BSU have no shot at any player that USC or LSU decides they want, a great college football team does NOT come out of nowhere, they are built slowly. BSU's rise from Division II some 20 years ago is about as fast as you will ever see a team rise, and in that time, they had plenty of time to start scheduling better opponents or lobbying to get into a different conference. up until recently, BSU made no attempt to hide the fact that they were content to schedule and run over weak teams.
and once again, without the BSC, who gets into your playoffs, what are the rules?

As I said in the other thread, you would still need polls to have a playoff. Start them in October instead of pre-season, first of all. Then, you form a selection committee like in CBB to select the final teams(however many that may be, I say 10). Next, you have the playoff games in the BCS bowls, while the remaining teams play in all the other normal bowls. I could even go for a bye for the top 2 seeds(based on polls, not the selection committee), thus putting more importance on the regular season.
Rivalries and tradition are what college football is built on, so I don't see any way the reg season is hurt by a playoff. Auburn/Alabama, Ohio St/Michigan, Miami/FSU, Florida/UGA, USC/UCLA, Oregon/Oregon St,Michigan/Notre Dame, and on and on. None of these matchups will deteriorate in intensity or importance with a playoff.
And Vander, didn't your victory over Oklahoma a few years ago show you that you can play with the big-boys? Hell, you beat Oregon this year! Or Utah last year vs Bama? TCU is beating BCS teams every weekend it seems like. The fact that small conference teams get screwed every year pisses me off, and i'm an SEC fan!

I second this.
I would rather see a champion crowned on the field. That is what is supposed to be great about sports, the champion beats everyone else to take it. The players should be in control, not the voters or computer rankings.
I also don't think it will affect rivalries at all. They mean just as much each year and conference titles are a big deal as well.
I'd love an eight (or even sixteen) game playoff because anything less will still rely on human judgment via polls or a selection committee - even worse, a frigging computer. I'm almost to the point with the BCS that we should just go back to the old system of a certain bowl being the reward for a conference champion. I feel for the little guy because Boise and Utah have answered the ''any given Saturday'' argument but nothing is getting done about improving the system. And face it - if the Big 12 winner and the SEC champ played each other for pride in Jerryland at the end of the year, you'd watch.

I don't think any rational BSU fan thought we could stand a chance against Florida that year, we were lucky we got to play Choklahoma :lol and were ecstatic with the win, that win was the greatest sporting event/moment of all time IMO, getting mauled by Florida the following week would only have diminished the greatness of it. those guys won the fucking Fiesta Bowl, they went out on top.
