Preseason Debuts

Every year, there is much anticipation to see how the Spurs players will perform. This year is no exception. The addition of new players has energized the team and the fans. To some, this game may not matter much but for those players who are trying to show that they belong on the roster, playing time is worth gold.

Even though these preseason performances may not be enough to indicate how a player will develop in the long run, it's an opportunity for the coaching staff to prepare for the regular season and for the fans to observe the team in action.

How did some Spurs players perform in their preseason openers?

Manu Ginobili
The Spurs won their preseason opener on October 8, 2002 at Philadelphia, 95-82. Tim was the leading scorer for the Spurs with 18 points.

Manu made his debut Tuesday October 15 at Houston in a Spurs loss, 96-93.



Manu’s stats: 17 min, 3-9 FG, 4 Reb, 2 Ast, 6 pts


Note: Manu didn’t play in the first few preseason games because he was recovering from a sprained right ankle he suffered in the World Championships.

Tony Parker
Tony made his preseason debut with a Spurs win on October 9, 2001 at New York, 84-71. Duncan, Bowen, and Rose each contributed with 10 points.



Tony’s stats: 3-9 FG, 1-1 FT, 1-1 3pts, 8 pts


Tim Duncan
Tim made his preseason debut with a Spurs win on October 11, 1997 at Washington, 99-87. Tim was the leading scorer for the Spurs with 19 points.



Tim’s stats: 22 min, 9-13 FG, 1-2 FT, 4 Reb, 2 Ast, 19 pts


David Robinson
Sean Elliott
David and Sean made their preseason debuts with a win on October 4, 1989 against the Bucks, 105-96. Terry Cummings was the leading scorer for the Spurs with 18 points and 14 rebounds.



David’s stats: 19 min, 5-10 FG, 7-10 FT, 11 Reb, 1 Ast, 17 pts



Sean’s stats: 23 min, 2-6 FG, 2-2 FT, 4 Reb, 2 Ast, 6 pts
