hell yeah. What a great deal for the Browns. They get 2 picks, a solid WR and another warm body for a guy who: 1)can't catch, 2)is a cancer, 3) is lazy, 4) fights with the King, 5)was leaving at the end of the season anyway.
Great move.

an athlete that plays for a team in a totally different sport than he plays. It's like both the Browns and Indians know the ramifications of losing Lebron in 2010 and even if it costs them talent, they do it for the good of the city.
That being said, I think the Browns are the winners in this deal. Braylon was leaving next year and was a troublemaker who couldn't catch. The Browns managed to turn that into 2 players and 2 picks.

the first bad move by Rex Ryan as the Jets HC.
WTF are you talking about, it's a great move. He gave away nothing- a crappy receiver, a special-teams player and two mediocre draft picks- for a guy who caught 16 touchdown passes two years ago and will probably produce like that again in the right environment.
The Browns got bent over sideways. But hey, Mangini sent a real message here. Screw around and we'll send you out of this Siberia to a contender in the greatest city on earth. That'll show him!
Now Massaquoi gets all the double-coverage. My over/under on how fast the Buckeye homers/SEC haters in the fanbase turn on him: one year.

I agree. Idk why Rex was so animated about getting this guy. He is part of the reason Anderson lost his starting job to begin with. He reminds me of Travis Taylor with the way he drops passes. The only difference I see between him and Taylor is Edwards runs better routes.

Rex Ryan? Tennenbaum makes the moves, first gets an ok from the Owner then asks the coach, but it probably still happens if the coach no's it.

This was a decent risk reward trade for NY IMO. They weren't gonna win with the offense they had, and if Edwards comes in with the right attitude and fixes his dropped passes problem, it gives the Jets something their offense was sorely missing. This Braylon Edwards we're talking about so there is risk involved, but IMO he's a top 5 receiver as far as raw talent goes.

Braylon will always drop his share of passes. But when he's on, he'll make a lot of great ones too.
I just think things kind of snowballed on him here in Cleveland. This is simply a bad situation all around.
I also think there's a fairly large subset of the fanbase that was going to hate on him no matter how well or poorly he produced. People were hating on him two years ago when he broke every significant franchise single-season receiving record.
He needed a fresh start and he gets it. He'll do well in New York IMO.

I agree with you that he did needed a fresh start and someone who can get him the ball.
I am just not sold on Mark Sanchez yet especially after he got lit up last week in New Orleans. I wouldnt be surprised if last weeks game messed with his head and he keeps throwing pics. B Edwards will be fine and maybe not get to his performance two seasons ago but he will improve signficantly in New Jersey!

Man, it's been a long time since chiming in here, but back and ready to attack.
The Jets were looking to get a proven vet to replace Coles after he left for Cincy. Now the Jes have two legit WR's which will allow guys like Dustin Keller to flourish.
I think it's a good move by both teams. Cleveland rids themselves of a pain in the ass, and the Jets, under Ryan, won't go for that crap, and get themselves a player who, mind you, is right now more known for his drops, but has also shown in the past he can be a go to receiver.

Meh, recent history has shown that mid-season WR trades rarely pan out in the traded year. Chris Chambers and everyone's favorite, RW come to mind.
Now the Jets only have a #1, #2 and #6 in next year's draft.
And that's two games in a row that Sanchez has looked like ass. He was pretty bad in the Titan game even though Tennessee has one of the worst pass Ds in the league. In his last 7 quarters, Sanchez has completed 49% of his passes, thrown 1 TD and turned the ball over 6 times. The media love with performances like that is rather amusing...

I think I must be the only one who doesn't think Sanchez is all that great. He is a good QB, but I don't get people who rag on the Browns for trading the 5th pick for more picks.
Sanchez walks into a situation with 2 Pro Bowl linemen, and a Pro Bowl Running Back
The Browns have 1 Pro Bowl lineman, and traded that pick to sure up one of the most important positions in football. Nobody, not Joe Montana, Tom Brady, nobody is going to succeed without a) a good line, b) a good runningback. Sanchez has both in New York, and would have neither in Cleveland. That is the difference.
The Browns had 3 total picks last year to rebuild with. Those trades got them what they need, draft picks. Alex Mack wasn't the player you draft at 5, so they traded, got a couple picks and players, and drafted someone who will be on the o-line for the next 10 years.
The Browns are rebuilding. You don't draft a QB every year and rebuild. This is what you do:
1) Draft linemen, and build a good, young OL
2)draft defense
3) draft QB
4) draft Running backs and other Skill players
Linemen stay in the league longer which is why you draft them first. Runningbacks last 4-5 years which is why you draft them last. Quarterbacks who have good lines, defense, and runningbacks succeed. Look at Flacco, Ryan, and now Sanchez

first season with the Jets Mangini drafted a tackle and center in the draft. We already have the tackle, and he drafted a Center. Mangold turned out to be a pro bowler and cornerstone of the team.

The thing I can't stand is every time Sanchez makes a mistake (misses an open receiver, throws a pick, etc.), the announcers say, "That's just a rookie mistake, you won't see those in a few years" as if Sanchez is going to have a 100% completion rating and average 5 touchdowns a game by his 3rd season and will always make the right play. When Peyton Manning throws a pick, no one says, "That's just a veteran mistake," they simply say it was a bad decision.
I agree that the, "If the Browns had Sanchez instead of Quinn they'd be so much better," or "If the Lions drafted Sanchez instead of Stafford they'd be great," talk is dumb.
The Jets were 5th in yards per carry last year (4.7) and have a top 5 defense this year. That team is still 3-2 or better with Stafford or Quinn instead of Sanchez. Not only does Sanchez have a multiple pro bowler O-line and a pro bowl fullback, he's got one of the best 3rd down pass catching RB's in the NFL, a safety valve neither Quinn nor Stafford have. It's not like Sanchez took over a team that was horrible last year and has it at 3-2, he took over what was a really good team.

hell, Brett Favre had some of his worst seasons and everyone thought he was done until Ryan Grant broke out in 2007 when he averaged over 5 yards a carry. Then all of a sudden Favre was revived. Farve "resurrected" his career with help of Grant in 2007, Thomas Jones in 2008, and now he has one of the best Runningbacks ever and he looks unbelievable.
Ryan Grant doesn't look great this year, but he looks alot better than a 40 year old Jamal Lewis. Teams actually have to gameplan for Grant, with Lewis they can play pass and still stop his slow ass
Thunder Dan
10-15-2009, 03:16 PM
and not only that, the Browns defense is pathetic so they get into games where they have to pass 65-70% of the time just to try to catch up which doesn't exactly help Quarterbacks. Unless you are Tom Brady, or Peyton Manning (which aren't even good examples because they still have the ability to run) QB's will not succeed when the defense knows you are going to pass the ball. That is when sacks happen, and that is when INT's happen. Running opens your passing game, and you can't really run the ball when you are down by 20 points at halftime like the Browns are just about every week.
And while I'm talking defense, the Browns defense doesn't help the QB with field position. The Browns are close to last in the league in 3 and outs, which means they are always getting the ball in their own territory which means instead of going 60 yards for a score, they have to go 80+. The is alot more that can go wrong in that 20 yard difference, and most of the time it does go wrong.

The Browns are a hell of a lot better at left tackle than the Packers are, and that goes a long way toward helping a quarterback be successful.
At some point we're going to have to nut up and look for a franchise quarterback, even if we don't have a perfect supporting case around him.
Thunder Dan
10-15-2009, 03:21 PM
if you look at the numbers from Tom Brady's incredible 2007 season, 58% of his TD drives were less than 65 yards. That is just as much a stat for the defense as it is for Tom Brady.
I can't even remember the last time the Browns forced a 3 and out and got the ball on their own 40 yard line or closer and I watch every game

yeah but left tackle isn't the whole line. Thomas can be the best tackle in the world but it doesn't mean anything if they are filling piece of shit guards and centers every year like they have been doing for 10 years now. You gotta draft a line, have them play together for a couple years and then you will have a solid line. Lines are built by having played together. You can't just patchwork new lines together every year and expect to win. You gotta deveolp the 2 most important positions (center and LT) and add solid pieces, and you won't see benefits right away, it takes time.
and I wouldn't say we are a hell of alot better as Clifton is also a Pro Bowler even though he is hurt at this time.

10-15-2009, 03:33 PM
Dan, we didn't exactly "draft the line" that protected Bernie Kosar during his best years of 1986 and '87. The highest drafted guy on that line was Mike Baab, who was a 5th-rounder. We didn't have a single first-round pick on the front line of the receiving corps: Webster Slaughter was a 2nd-rounder, Brian Brennan was a 4th-rounder, and Reggie Langhorne was a 7th-rounder. How about the backfield? Nope- Earnest Byner was a 10th-rounder, Kevin Mack was a refugee from the USFL, and Herman Fontenot wasn't even drafted at all.
The only other 1st-round pick on that entire offense, besides Bernie, was Ozzie Newsome- and he was way over the hill by then anyway.
Point is, a quarterback can make an average supporting cast look a lot better than average if he's effective enough. And I'm of the belief that if we find the right guy at quarterback, he can come right in and make this team better.

well we are trading our high picks, but I'm one that believes that Joe Montana in his prime could come play for the Browns and he wouldn't be able to win. The Browns need a ton of pieces, not just a QB, and when you need a ton of pieces, you draft the ones you know will be there for awhile.
It's like putting a puzzle together, you don't start with the middle, you start with the corners and ends. Linemen are the easiest, safest picks, then you get the foundation and can add the skill positions that will bring your team back.

^I don't think TD is saying you need a bunch of first rounders, I think he's saying you need continuity on the offensive line. I obviously have no idea how good/bad any of the players you just listed are, but the QB needs linemen who he can trust and who play as a unit.
TD, I agree completely about center and left tackle (or right tackle if your QB is a lefty, but almost all lefty QBs suck). By far the two most important parts of a good line are having a player who can block the stud weak side rusher and protect the QB's blind side, and a center who communicates well with the QB and gets the line to play as a cohesive unit.
Just look at the Colts, it seems to not matter at all who is at guard and tackle, as long as Saturday is at center, the line will deliver at least an average performance. When they had Glenn and Saturday, you knew the line would deliver a great performance every Sunday. Hopefully the Browns can establish something with Mack and Thomas.

The Browns need a ton of pieces, not just a QB, and when you need a ton of pieces, you draft the ones you know will be there for awhile.
More importantly, you draft the ones who won't need the others around him to grow as a player. If a rookie left tackle's team went to go play the Vikings, no matter how bad the rest of his team is, the LT would develop as a player having to block Jared Allen for 60 minutes.
It's pretty hard for a QB to better his pocket presence when more than half the time the line can't maintain blocks long enough to form a pocket.

No doubt. I do think, more than any other unit, an offensive line can be "coached up." And the Colts have had one of the best OL coaches in the game in Howard Mudd (who was also the OL coach for the Browns in the late '80s.) The right coach can make chicken salad out of chicken shit on an offensive line. See Howard Mudd, Bobb McKittrick for the 49ers teams in the '80s, or Alex Gibbs.
