View Full Version : The hell type of animal is it?

For the last week, we've been hearing scratching and a lot of movement inside of our walls. It travels all through the interior of the house -- from downstairs in the laundry room to upstairs behind the shower on the opposite end of the house. You can hear whatever try of animal it is moving around and it sounds pretty large.

Then yesterday when I woke up there were paw prints in the kitchen. They were smaller than our dogs' prints so I assumed it was the animal in question that makes noise within the walls. To figure out what it is, I had the brilliant idea of buying a four-pack of industrial strength glue pads to try to stop it the next time in runs through the kitchen.

Last night, I put out the glue pads. This morning I wake up and the glue pads are untouched. But I took a shower, came back 20 minutes later to pick up the glue pads and one of them was gone. The glue pad is pretty big and rigid so I figured it'd be easy to find the animal in question with the glue pad stuck to it ... but no.

I've looked through the entire house, I've moved the appliances, looked everywhere imaginable and there is no sign of the animal or the glue pad. There are holes here and there where a smallish animal could escape ... but not if connected to that glue pad.

Since that incident, we haven't heard anything in the walls today. Kori thinks I killed it but I think it's probably just hiding somewhere :hat

What kind of animal could it be? Whatever it is scratches, it can move around the interior of the walls, it makes a squeaking sound, it has paw prints that are about 1 inch long and is strong enough to get stuck to a glue pad and keep on truckin'.

We are moving in about a week so I'm not going to start tearing down walls to find it so if it's a cool type of animal hopefully it doesn't mind that glue pad . . .

Probably a rat. Man just hope that thing doesn't die up there while you still live there. The stench would be horrible.

I think it has to be a possum that came in through the sliding glass door, but I have never seen it.

I think the feet are bigger than a rat.. and it doesn't make a rat noise.. something a little different.

I think the feet are bigger than a rat.. and it doesn't make a rat noise.. something a little different.I had something like that happen in one of my rental houses last summer. It was a huge cat sized rat who totally destroyed the insulation in the attic and some of the ducting. But I made a huge mistake by putting rat poison in the attic, so it ate it and died and the place was uninhabitable for a while. A year later, and when the humidity and breeze are just right, it still stinks!

From my experience it's two things. Squirrels or sewer rats. You can't use the glue pads on the sewer rats you have to buy those blue pellets it makes the rats real thirsty and they leave your house in search of water. They travel though the power lines at night. Chances are you have a hole around your gutters or near the roof line.

please give us updates I hate when people ask for help and never get back to what the hell they ended up doing.

Sounds like a coon. Get out of there before it dies and stinks up your whole house. Or if you want to be nice homeowners, have the animal corpse removed before someone new moves.

Sounds like a coon.

LJ said he heres it travel though the different rooms so a coon is to large to fit though the walls. besides the coons make a distinctive sound that you can tell they are in pain or fighting.

I'd vote for a possum as well.

We had a scratching noise like that in one of our walls one time, and it when on for almost a day when I finally decided to tear out the sheet rock to see what it was. First a young bird that was still a little too young to fly jumped out of the wall onto the floor, and then the mother bird flew out and all around our house.

We had a side vent near the roof that I realized later had a bird's nest in it...one of the babies must have wandered across the attic and fell in between two of the walls and mom went after it.

We pick the baby up with a glove and put her back and let mom out of the house and she flew back to the nest and we noticed that the baby that fell into the wall and the others all bid farewell to their nest about a week later...after which I closed off the hole with some screen.

could be a little coon. Probably not a coon though. I had something die in my wall about a month ago and never found out what it was

Dam I forgot about the little coon! your right! :toast

And the possum is a good guess also. I wonder if LJ has an attic. You can put an AM radio on all night and it will get rid of any animal. I suggest ESPN the zone for faster results. :tu

For the entire week, the dogs have been tracking the animal and pawing at the part of the wall where it currently is. Now, they looked all around the house, didn't find anything and went to sleep.

I wonder if it left. I doubt it would die in like half a day.

Oh and if it is going to die, hopefully it can wait about a week . . .

trust me you don't want that. A sewer rat died in our walls and it took three weeks before we could breath again. And if it is a possum? your in trouble the AM radio thing really works there is something about the signal that scares them away.

My guess was bird until you mentioned the footprints. I had one once that fell in through my dryer vent in my roof and was scrathcing inside the walls. When I disconnected the dryer vent from the wall, it flew out the hole and into my house.

I pulled kittens out of our wall in our first house. Momma took them through the vent on the roof and they fell down. Freaks us out when we started hearing meows coming from the walls.

I had scratching noises all over a few months back. Raccoon.

They are damn good climbers in attics. Anyways, they left gray and black fur on wood splinters. Vanished without a trace one day. No smell, probably didn't die.

The telltale sign?

Droppings.

It's a rat is my bet. Probably a sewer rat. I live close to a ditch that isnt paved and every fucking time the city comes to cut the grass they (the rats) run to the houses in my area. I've bought the biggest sticky pads available at home depot and that doesnt hold them at all.

Your best bet..... Buy an air rifle and stay awake one night. The biggest one I've killed was about half the size of a possum. Thankfully, the city only cuts the grass in the ditch like every 6 months. I get rid of my rat problem within 3 days when it happens.

The neighborhood association has been trying to get the city to pave those ditches for 3 years now solely because of this problem.
