View Full Version : Marion was badass...

Talk about a good game, he doesn't seem slowed down, though it's just one game. I'm just curious to see how him and Jho play together...

The most impressive thing about Marion was that all his 26 points came in the paint. Thats what the Mavs need, easy buckets. He had like 5 dunks tonight.

Roddy Beaubois was also badass.

Some of the moves he did left the opposing fansooohing.
Those back to back steals on Arenas were just nasty. I almost felt bad for Arenas. Getting embarrassed by a rookie.

I seriously think this can be the year the Mavs put it together. If they make a move to get a legit starting center, they can be really scary. They are going to be very good this year. They have a tricky roster, but if they can gel fast enough, they have a lot of versatility.

Younger McDyess was a good player but he's 35 now, I'd definitely take Gortat over McDyess right now.

Gortat plays backup to the best Center in the NBA so he doesn't get the minutes. But if you break down his production according to his minutes, he's highly productive.

Last Season Per 36 Minutes:
Per36 - McDyess - 11pts, 51 FG%, 12rbd, 1 block

McDyess - Age 35, Gortat Age 25

This fucking kills me. Seriously the Mavs, only way it could be worse is if the Lakers trade Walton for him. He was the Suns defense.

Also I saw espn had some updates on the suns. It makes me sick to see pictures of Kerr sitting next to gentry. Wish suns fans would run him and sarver out of town, find another owner.

yes because extrapolations from 12 min to 30 mins are always linear. What about consistency? PO proven performance? Its not so easy to just say "per 36mins". I personally HATE that stat.

Im not saying marcin gortat sucks, but i am saying he sucks compared to mcdyess now. Of course potentially he might have a ceiling "as high" as mcdyess. But when mcDyess is at that ceiling right now (he is nobody's fool at this moment), and when we are talking about starting center this year (so 35/25 doesnt matter, of course if we extrapolate 5 years in advance gortat at 30 will be better than mcdyess at 40. I will give u that much).

They're not stashing him in Europe. I don't know how many minutes are available to him with Kidd, JJB and JET, so play him 35 minutes a night in the D-League. From what I've seen I think he has the potential to be a good player in this league down the line.

I can understand that extrapolations are not always reliable but they do apply in Gortat's case. His lack of huge stats is directly affected by Dwight's 36 minutes per game with basically 12 minutes left for Gortat.

But if you give Gortat minutes, he produces...and he's like the 5th/6th option on a talented team. For example, when Dwight got suspended for elbowing some dude in the Playoffs last year, Gortat filled in perfectly and the Magic didn't miss a beat and won by 25 points. Gortat put in 11 pts and 15 rebounds.

Heck, the Mavs offered him the most they could and got matched by the Magic. If the Mavs had actually gotten Gortat, I would rate them higher than the Spurs.

Gortat is an outstanding defensive Center, excellent shotblocker and all while still having a good offensive game. He can shoot the 3, shoot midrange hooks or dunk the hell out of the ball. I'd place him in the Top 15, maybe even Top 10 Centers.

He plays very good defense while having good offense, there's only a couple of Centers in the NBA like Gortat...most can only do 1 or the other. The only reason Gortat is not better known is because he plays behind Dwight.

The Suns were scared of the Spurs. You could see it. The Mavs aren't. Different team with a different attitude. Unless he has an injury (God forbid) I think Marion is going to be a monster this year.

I've seen Marion in interviews when he was on different teams. I've never seen him like this. He appears to be absolutely "giddy" about being in Dallas. The whole team seems different. They're so upbeat and loose. Chemistry seems very strong. I have a really good feeling about this year.

I'm not sure this is really true. It's undeniable that he plays worse in the playoffs, but maybe it's because of the style he plays and not necessarily a mental hangup.

Marion gets almost all his points in transition and with "easy" baskets. In the playoffs when defenses tighten up, those "easy" buckets are harder to come by. Since he can't create his own shot, his production naturally goes down. I really don't think it's because he's a "choker".

Game 5 against the Spurs, he had a WIDE open three to tie the game up, and bricked it.

But regardless, you said it's clear his production goes down in the playoffs. In my book, that makes him a choker. It could be because of his skill set, it could be because he's a sackless pussy, but IMO, one who's production and effectiveness goes down in the playoffs is a choker.

I always thought Hump was an underated pick up in the Marion trade. He played some solid minutes for the Raptors, and hes a big body.
Raptor fans were always pissed off about Hump. When he checks in, he plays well. Then, he starts to think he is a superstar and coach has to take him out of the game to address this. Rinse and repeat.

Marion to sit a spell: Shawn Marion will miss the next few days of practice and probably Thursday's preseason game against Detroit with a mild right calf strain, team officials said.

Marion said after Sunday night's game that he didn't think the injury was serious, but wanted to give it some time to fully heal. He missed the preseason opener with the same injury, then had 26 points in the second exhibition.

"It's not a serious problem right now, and we want prevent it from getting unmanageable," Carlisle said.

The injuries to Marion, Howard (left ankle) and Thomas (right knee) mean only 13 players were healthy for practice Monday.

And it also means other players will get more playing time Thursday.

"[James] Singleton is going to start seeing some more minutes at three [small forward]," Carlisle said, adding that perimeter players could slide to small forward.

If you think our season didn't go down long before that then you're retarded.

Though you coulda hit lightening in a bottle.

Have to feel bad for Lopez though. Everything was set up perfectly just for him. A fresh start as the starting center. He'll play again of course, but, it'll never be quite like that again.

People consistently confused Marion's VERSATILE defense with GOOD defense. Analysts would drool over him because he could guard Duncan and Parker in the same game - nevermind that either one was going for 30 on him...
