Hes definitely an exciting rookie for us. But he still needs to improve his defense and work on his midrange. I think hes got a great feel down in post and he'll become better in that department naturally.

He is a beast- had a mature looking blonde w/him at Jean last night, with another chic close by. I bumped into him and surprisingly he's not that big/tall (I'm only 5'11") as he looks on tv. He had a cool presence about him which for some reason reminded me of Darryl Dawkins. RJ, Ian & Bogans were there too. RJ left first about 1:40 or so Ian as always was the last to leave.

The way in which Blair carves out is position, attacks the glass, and absolutely possesses the ball onces he gets his hands on it, he reminds me an awful lot of a young Leonard "Truck" Robinson or a Charles Barkley - minus the explosive leaping ability.

I mean the guy just flat out goes and gets it. It's like he wants the ball more than anyone else. Barkley often commented that his mindset on rebounding was that when the ball went up, he felt as though it belonged to him. Blair absolutely has that attitude.

He's got incredibly soft hands and a nice touch around the basket. Probably one of the more underrated aspects of his game is his passing ability.

Dejuan Blair once blocked out both centers and rebounded a jump ball.

Ive argued with your brethren about this in several threads. Lets just say that I think Jefferson wasnt the way to go if the team needed an athletic wing. There were plenty of cheaer options (Trevor Ariza is the one I keep bringing up) that would have filled the need while also putting the Spurs in position to be a player in the huge FA market next year (possibly to get a Ginobili replacement, sign a Chris Bosh etc).

But this thread is about Blair and I dont want to hijack it.

DeJuan Blair sold his soul to the devil for his rugged good looks and unparalleled rebounding ability. Shortly after the transaction was finalized, DeJuan ripped the devil's arm off and took his soul back. The devil, who appreciates irony, couldn't stay mad and admitted he should have seen it coming. They now play poker every second Wednesday of the month.

I'm going to start a thread on this in a bit after I finish first eating, and then updating it with a starting amount of FACTS! But for now...

- Pretty much anything goes. But, try to keep the language and content decent.

- If it is OBVIOUSLY a Chuck Norris joke, or OBVIOUSLY just flat-out sucks, it's not going in. At least make an attempt at something original. And if you're not original... at least just try to hide it, that work? (**edit** I mean the Chuck Norris jokes we've heard a thousand times; DeJuan Blair does not roundhouse kick shit)

- Unless I hear differently, I'm using your handle on here as authorial credit. If you don't want your FACT! on there, let me know. No big deal at all, I promise. In my mind the only thing worse than not giving someone appropriate credit is quoting them on something they don't want seen.

- I may occasionally change a word or two. Don't worry. It's probably either to correct the grammar or make it funnier. You still get credit no matter way.

Yeah..any time i put a Chuck joke on there, I'd change roundhouse kick to something else, and changed a lot of facts to make it make sense...if you choose to use any of mine.

DeJuan Blair FACT! #45: DeJuan Blair was once asked how many arms he planned to rip off per game. He responded "Oh I'd say four to five at least." Thus, his jersey number was selected. As a warning sign.

part of being a coach is knowing how to treat different personalities.

interstingly enough, he is somewhat dismissive of blair's early success. it may be that he recognizes blair has talent and drive enough to where he does not need to be coddled but, on the contrary, brought down to earth on a regular basis.

Maybe so, but from my ignorant perspective (hell, that is what all of us are viewing this from, unless there are telepaths on ST, or people close to Blair), I really don't like Pop making fun of Blair, especially the joke he made about Blair getting one D board, as well as seriously saying he doesn't know where Blair will fit and all that. Maybe that approach works best for Blair and Pop is a genius, but I don't like it. At least give the man his props. But then again, with every Spur, sports writer, and ST poster slobbering all over Blair, maybe Pop is has the right idea here.

As long as Blair is at worst the 3rd/4th big come the POs, I am gravy. If in June and July Tim is getting 35-40 minutes, Blair is getting 15-25 minutes, and Ian/Dice/Theo (in that order) are all splitting up the 40 minutes left, that would be my ideal 4/5 rotation.

Concerning the "Blair as a starter" thread, I would only want him to start as a PF, so he could only start when TD rests. And he could only really start with a shot blocking big most nights, like Ian or Theo. But for the shorter teams, he could start with Dice. Or if he proves able to use his weight and low center of gravity to keep much bigger players (Oden/Bynum/Shaq) away from their preferred spots, then he could start with anyone. He sure as hell can use his power and elasticity on O, I hope he can translate it to D. He has Timmy, Dice, and Theo to teach him in practice, and players have said he is open to tips, so there is hope yet.
And I second the white people wanna be black pic is lame. I still like being anglo/latino.

So for those who saw/listened to the game, how was Blair's D? We all know he is a stat stuffer when it comes to boards and points, I want to know if his 1-1 D is passable or not. If not, is it at least better than Bonner's?

For mine, Blair has shades of Paul Millsap/Jason Maxiell about him, and bits and pieces of Malik, and he looks like a cross between Elton Brand and Greg Oden, and the kid can freakin PLAY! Injuries notwithstanding, he'll be a crucial part of this team for years to come. :D

On the basketball strategy side, I love that Blair gives us a new weapon altogether, something we haven't had since the Twin Towers - a second elite rebounder to cause havoc on the offensive glass. Hell, it looks to me like you can still get 4 guys back and just leave Blair to swing the wrecking ball in there!

BTW, my new nickname for him is 'Grizzly' - GRIZZLY BLAIR! Suits him, I think. :smokin

PS Apologies, I didn't read the thread before posting, but I'm so happy about seeing him in the real NBA that I just needed to post!

I'm starting to see how this guy corrals so many offensive rebounds. Every time a shot goes up and even before, this guy is working his ass off for position, and easily wins that battle the majority of the time with his strength and quickness.

His brute strength, huge hands/wingspan and excellent timing make it easy for him to get to many rebounds first.

Blair averaging 8.3 pts/boards in 20 mpg, anyone see those numbers go up by the end of the year? I think they all will, but his points/boards will only go up by .2-.5, his minutes could go up by 3-5 minutes.

Even if his minutes go up slightly, but his pts/boards go down a bit, I will be more than pleased.

There's no reason he shouldn't be getting minutes over Bonner or 'Dice at this point..

McDyess takes a long time to get in rhythm, nothing new..Bonner isn't doing it..

Blair's defense isn't any worse than the 2 of them..at least he brings energy and toughness to this team, we desperately need it..

Fantasy Basketball Breaking News (http://www.rotoworld.com/content/playerpages/playerbreakingnews.asp?sport=NBA&id=1598&line=120688&spln=1)

DeJuan Blair: Blair posts near double-double in loss to UTA

DeJuan Blair nearly double-doubled in 21 minutes off the bench on Thursday, scoring 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting with nine rebounds and one block.

Blair has quieted down a bit with his scoring after a double-double of 14 and 11 in the season opener, but has hit double-digit rebounds in three of the Spurs' four games, all in just 20 minutes per game. If and when Tim Duncan misses time, Blair will be capable of some solid fantasy lines.

Fantasy Thoughts - November 5th (http://www.examiner.com/x-27948-Fantasy-Basketball-Examiner~y2009m11d6-Fantasy-Thoughts--November-5th)

Low Minutes, High Production – DeJuan Blair posted 14 points and 9 rebounds last night in 21 minutes of action for the San Antonio Spurs. For the season, Blair is averaging 9.8 points and 8.5 rebounds per game in about 21 minutes per game. That is solid output considering the amount of minutes he is playing. If his numbers were projected over a full 48 minute game, he would average 22.6 points and 19.6 rebounds. I normally find the per-48 minute stats to be useless, but I used it simply to show that Blair is making the most of the minutes that he is currently playing. With the depth that the Spurs have, I would not consider him a wise fantasy decision at this point, but if the Spurs suffer injuries in their frontcourt or his minutes begin to increase, Blair may be a player to keep in mind.

From Harvey's blog.

DeJuan in pads? (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/buckharvey/2009/11/dejuan-in-pads.html)
By Buck Harvey

Glen Davis told reporters, "I will try" the NFL, and he has the body to try.

Big Baby, at 290 pounds, with quick enough feet to play away from the basket for the Celtics, is a prototype defensive end.

DeJuan Blair is, too. So would this devoted Steelers fan ever want to do the same?

When asked, Blair shook his head. He didn't play high school football and, when asked why, he pointed to his knees.

"I like these too much," he said.

Davis played high school football in Baton Rouge, La., with an odd combination of positions. On defense he was on the line, and on offense he was a running back.

A big running back.

"I definitely could have made it to the NFL," Davis told reporters this week. And he probably could have.

But Davis took that further. "When I become an All-Star in the NBA, when I become a great player in the NBA," Davis said, "then I'll try football. One of my dreams has always been to play football."

That's likely the entertainer in Big Baby talking. There are a few steps before he becomes "an All-Star in the NBA." Establishing himself as a starter on his own team is one.

But should he become "a great player," then gambling on football would make every NFL scout question his sanity. He would give up a long-term guaranteed contract? To subject himself to NFL violence?

His agent, also, would have some advice for him.

Blair isn't tempted. He wanted to play football when he was a little kid, as so many do who grow up in Pittsburgh. But he says he was too big for the pee-wee weight requirements. He began to have his knee problems his freshman and sophomore years in high school, and, by the time he was healthy he was committed to basketball.

But he still loves the Steelers, right?

"Of course," he said.

I once hooked up with a couple of hoes from UConn
but their jaws couldn't stretch enough for Little Dejuan
So all you Spurs groupies just for safety's sake
don't come calling unless you got a jaw like a snake

Yo Hasheem! Memphis picking you was a waste!
Once you're back on solid foods I'll make you tell me how my ass taste!

Damn, Blair had a BA game tonight, even though I only saw half the game. I saw the Kapono block and the pump layup, but my girl said He was crazy good in the first half.

From what I saw, he defended well, and his fouls were manly, iirc he knocked Greene
to the ground when he was cutting for a layup. And I also saw 3 or 4 solid boards. Btw, did his attempted putback dunk off Manu's miss count as a O rebound?

Great game to build off of. Every time he made a mistake he seemed determine on the ensuing play to play harder. Don't expect to see him much for the Boston game but hope he continues to improve.

That will be a Duncan/Theo/Dyess rotation for sure, with sprinkles of Red Rocket. If one or more of them fuck up, The Beast will get his shot.

Wish I could say the same about Hairston if one of Manu/Mason/RJ/Fin messed up.:depressed

Thank go I was wrong about Blair, but I wish Theo hadn't been passed on.

And for the game (which I only saw snippets of due to being at work), how was Blair's D? I somehow caught most of his offensive highlights, like the putback (in the Spurs basket:downspin:), and some of his up crazy layups, but was his D mediocre, astonishing, astonishingly awful?

Also, on a hypothetical note, how awesome is it that in the biggest game so far of his rookie season, he was the best big on either team? And when the other bigs are Duncan, Garnett, Perkins, Rasheed, and McDyess, that's saying something for an undersized rookie with no ACLs.:hat

After watching the game last night and seeing him get some blocks in other games(the one on dirk comes to mind first), im starting to wonder if dejuan has the potential to average maybe 1-2 blocks a game. Maybe not this season, but eventually down the line?

He wasn't a bust. He was productive especially for a 2nd rounder.

Agreed. It's hard to be a bust at pick 37. Like Bonner he was asked to do too much. Great as a 4th big, average as a 3rd, but out of his depth as a starter.

I'd say he had a pretty good career for a guy who didn't have fucking ACL's in either of his knees.

Amazing how fast he flamed out after S.A. Had a decent season with the Mavs and didn't really play in Washington

Spurs basically got 4 years of solid play for less than $4 million dollars, he flamed out after leaving the Spurs but had a pretty good career overall.

Drom looked it up last year, but even with him essentially being done for four years now, Blair is 18th in the 2009 draft in terms of win-shares, and he's sixth in terms of WS/48. As a Spur, DeJuan played like a top lottery pick. Nowadays, he's fallen down to a mid-first. But even with him not playing, he's not likely to ever be lower than 30, as most of the guys who are under him aren't even playing anymore.

There were things that the Spurs could have done differently during that draft, such as taking Patty and Wes Matthews over McClinton and De Colo. But drafting Blair isn't one of them. They're only mistake with DeJuan was not trading him during the 2012 draft when the Warriors were supposedly offering the pick they ended up using on Draymond and the Heat were offering up a pick that could have been used on a superior player
