I just dont get how winning that much money could ruin anyone's (with 1/4 a brain) life. Sickens me to see these dumbasses that win and destroy themselves. I mean...take 35% off for taxes, invest 50% of it, and go crazy with the rest...you would never have to even crack the egg...just live of simple interest, and still have enough to set up quite a few people and go apeshit with spending.

Oh believe me....id squander...probably a good 10 million...nice 40 to 50 foot sport fisher, beach house (maybe more than one), at least 3 cars, lots of traveling...

Even if you just invested 25 million of it, and made 3% on it a year, that is almost 800k income the first year...and just grows from there...Dont kill my math, since im terrible at it....but thats a good chunk of money, without even touching the original 25m...and not counting the other 75m in cash you have...lol...

The key to not blowing it all fast is, once you go downhill on drugs, make sure it's a cheap one. If you're going for coke, of course your going to go broke eventually. If you settle for meth, then you'll have enough for the kids.

No one has hit the TX lottery since early May. Put it this way: Mega has climbed over $300M, popped, climbed a couple of notches, popped, and now climbed up to $170M in the time that TX lottery took to climb agonizingly slowly to $70M.

Another note: apparently, Powerball and Mega have reached an agreement where they will allow states to sell both brands, and TX law allows this, so some time early next year, we should be one of the first states to have both. There is some concern that the nights are the same as the TX lotto, but heck, they've moved games before. What I think might happen is they move TX lotto to MON/THU and run it concurrently with TX Two Step, and give the WED/SAT drawings to Powerball.

Except that your odds aren't 1/1,000,000 , they're `1/175,000,000 for Mega Millions. You'd have to wait until the cash pot gets higher than that, after taxes, and then buy every number combination (all 175,000,000 of them...that's a lot of freaking play slips to fill out!), and then hope no one splits the pot with you.

I always do cash. If I actually win it's all going into diversified hard assets. Ranches, Real estate on the East Cape of Mexico and Costa Rica, etc. Plus of course a King Air to go back and forth...The dollar could very well go to shit and who knows what the tax rate will have to be in the future to pay for all our deficits...

It'd definitely go into a trust with a majority of it going into real estate. And a red GTR.

"A woman being driven around in a rented limousine pulled up at a coat store and announced she'd won the lottery and would pay for everyone's purchases, police said, but she ended up causing a riot when customers realized it was a hoax.

Angry customers threw merchandise around and looted, leaving the store looking as though a hurricane had passed through it, police said.
Linda Brown was arrested Tuesday after an hours-long shopping spree that began when she hired a stretch Hummer Limousine to drop her off at a Burlington Coat Factory store, police Sgt. Lt. Michael Deakins said. Brown walked to a cash register and loudly announced she had won the lottery and would pay for each person's merchandise up to $500, he said."

A quick (and very loose) calculation of the expected payout of a lottery ticket for this size jackpot reveals that it is actually a good investment to purchase this lottery ticket (i.e. the expected payout is slightly higher than the dollar cost of the ticket.)

I only based this on the 355 million annualized payout, but did not factor in the time value lost over the 26 payments. Additionally I didn't factor in the expected value of non-jackpot payouts. So its possible that this is still not a good investment, but it is close.

Edit: Awww, scratch that. I really don't know enough about the non-jackpot payouts to make such a claim. I have bought 1 lottery ticket in my life and it was a scratch off (+$7!). All I can say is that for a $1 ticket, and a 355 Million dollar payout (if it was lump sum at that amount), then the expected payout is higher than the cost of the ticket.

Would y'all get the lump sum or monthly? I'd do monthly to save quite a bit on taxes overall, BUT that means more than likely the government will likely get it all back once I've shuffled off this mortal coil.

Definitely lump sum. Take your tax hit at current rates and put it in a trust. Make sure all income from then on is taxed as capital gains.

Drachen
01-04-2011, 05:06 PM
probably the lump sum. It kinda depends on the rate that they are discounting it from the 355 million to get back to the 224 and if I think I can earn more over the same time span with the 224 lump sum (I don't have my financial calculator with me to figure this out). How would it help your tax situation? I would assume that even the payment option would put you in the highest tax bracket.

It's annual payments. You are gonna pay taxes on it anyway and the ordinary income rate could be a lot higher than it is today.

Take the lump sum, pay taxes on it, then invest it at a decent return and pay cap gains tax at 15% on your profits and you still come out ahead in the long term.

You aren't taking inflation and taxes into account on those 26 annual payments.

damn, if you took the 224M, took a 40% federal bite out of it (down to 134.4M), invested it and an extremely super modest 3%, your annualized income (after a 40% federal bite) comes in just under 2.5 million. This is, of course if you play it really really really safe, and no nothing about investments, money management, and tax sheltering. *sigh*

why is that?

Because everyone picks birthdays for lottery numbers, so the expected number of people to split a jackpot between should be lower.

(CNN) -- A family in Washington that was one of two jackpot winners in the Mega Millions drawing will speak to reporters about its windfall Thursday.
However, the buyer in Idaho with whom the family will split the $380 million prize has yet to come forward.
Washington lottery officials have so far only disclosed that the family is from Ephrata, a small town with a population of just over 6,000. They have scheduled a news conference at 2 p.m. (5 p.m. ET) to introduce the lucky family that will claim $190 million -- half of the $380 million jackpot -- from the Tuesday night drawing.
The ticket was sold at a Safeway store in Ephrata, lottery officials said.
Store Manager Geoff Bell told CNN affiliate KREM that the phones began to ring off the hook when news surfaced that the store had sold one of the two winning tickets.
"It's great for the community. It's nice that Safeway can be a part of helping somebody make some dreams come true for them," Bell told the affiliate.
The ticket in Idaho was sold in Post Falls.
Tuesday's Mega Millions numbers were 4, 8, 15, 25, 47 and 42 (42 was the Mega Ball number).
As days went by without a winner, residents in the 42 states that take part in the Mega Millions drawing rushed to stores to buy more and more tickets, pushing the jackpot to $380 million -- the second-highest in the drawing's history.
The highest was $390 million in 2007.
