Final: Clippers 93, Spurs 90 - preseason (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/10/spurs-vs-clippe-3.html)
By Joe Alexander
George Hill and DeJuan Blair led the Spurs in minutes played and had stats to match in a 93-90 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday at the AT&T Center.
Blair had a double-double with 12 rebounds and 11 points in 24 minutes. Hill started at point guard and had 13 points, who assists and three rebounds in 29 minutes.
Richard Jefferson started and led the Spurs with 15 points in the first half in 16 minutes. Jefferson was 7 of 9 from the field including 1 of 1 on 3-pointers.
Marcus Williams had 11 points, all in the second half.
Rookie Blake Griffin started for the Clippers and led all scorers with 23 points.
* * * * *
Curtis Jerrells fires up a 3-pointer at the buzzer. It didn't look bad, but it went off the rim. The Clippers win 93-90.
The Spurs lead 68-66 at the end of the third quarter. Marcus Haislip, Ian Mahinmi, Roger Mason Jr. and Marcus Williams all sat out the first half but played in the third quarter.
Manu Ginobili and DeJuan Blair are both up to eight points.
The Spurs lead 57-53 with 6:13 left in the third quarter. Timeout.
Blake Griffin, by the way, looks pretty good. He has 17 points and four rebounds. He was 5 of 8 from the field in the first half.
At halftime, the Spurs lead 51-44. Richard Jefferson has 15 points.
Richard Jefferson is having a good quarter. He is up to 11 points and just got fouled. He will try to finish an and-one after a timeout. The Spurs lead 44-40.
With 5:33 left in the second quarter, the Spurs lead 35-32.
End of the first quarter: Clippers 27, Spurs 23.
Every Spurs starter has a basket. Tim Duncan was actually the last one. The Clippers lead 12-10.
Spurs starters: George Hill, Malik Hairston, Richard Jefferson, Tim Duncan and Antonio McDyess.

Okay this chronologically backwards formatting for this shit is annoying. How much extra work is it to lay the text out so it makes no fucking sense to anyone that didn't watch the game? If you're going to write in present tense the whole way, then do the beginning at the top and add to it. Keeping track of the game in Windows Notepad would be more clear.

9:24 SA - D. Blair offensive rebound
9:24 SA - D. Blair misses shot
2 rebounds in 2 seconds!
Dennis Rodman used to do that when he was a Spur. The difference is that Rodman missed on purpose so he could pad his rebounding stats.

Griffin leads Clippers over Spurs (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/recap?gid=2009101424&prov=ap)
Blake Griffin, the overall No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, had 23 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes to lead the Los Angeles Clippers to a 93-90 preseason victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday night.
In the closing seconds, Clippers center DeAndre Jordan(notes) stuffed Curtis Jerrells’ layup attempt that would have given the Spurs the lead, then hit two free throws with 5.1 seconds left. Jerrells missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Griffin scored 10 points in the first quarter and had 13 in the third.
“It was cool,” Griffin said of his first-quarter, head-to-head matchup with perennial All-NBA post Tim Duncan. “I’ve watched him for as long as I can remember, since I was 8 years old and he was in his first year in the league. It was really cool to go up against him.”
The Clippers outscored the Spurs 29-26 in the fourth quarter behind 13 points from Al Thornton.
Richard Jefferson, acquired by San Antonio from Milwaukee in an offseason trade, scored 15 points in 16 minutes, all in the first half. Rookie DeJuan Blair added 11 points and 12 rebounds for the Spurs.
“I came into a situation where a lot of guys already have known the system for a long time,” Jefferson said. “My job is to learn the system and figure out how it all fits for me. Once I can figure that out, I can be more aggressive. It’s almost like I am a rookie again, but the more I get to play, the more aggressive I can be.”
Jordan, a second-year player from nearby Texas A&M, finished with 15 points and eight rebounds.
Neither Jefferson nor Tim Duncan, who had six points and five rebounds in 17 minutes, played in the second half. Tony Parker did not play at all for the Spurs.
Marcus Camby and Chris Kaman sat out for the Clippers.
Jefferson scored eight straight points for the Spurs during a late stretch in the second quarter. One of his baskets in the run came off crisp passes from Manu Ginobili and Antonio McDyess, another heralded offseason pickup as a free agent.
The Spurs took their first lead, 28-27, when Jerrells hit a 21-foot jumper not quite 3 minutes into the second quarter. Jefferson re-entered the game at the 8:20 mark and took over, scoring the eight straight points in a 2-minute stretch.
George Hill’s 3-pointer with 29.4 seconds left in the first half gave the Spurs a 51-44 lead. Hill finished with 13 points.
Griffin, who didn’t play in the second quarter, had a thunderous dunk at the beginning of the third. Later in the quarter he converted another alley-oop, this one one-handed off a pass from Ricky Davis.
“We have to make plays like that,” said Griffin, who was 5 of 6 from the field in the third period and 10 of 14 overall. “It was great that we kept it somewhat close throughout the game, and we made the plays that gave us the momentum.”
The lead went back and forth in the final quarter before Thornton scored 11 straight points for the Clippers, including a 3 that put them up 89-83.

Some thoughts via the radio, again...
You didn't need to hear Brett Brown after the game to know that Pop challenged RJ to be the player he was brought in to be prior to the game. It was quite interesting to hear Brown say that RJ's subdued play wasn't actually a result of him focusing on his defense, what some had speculated, though. Instead he felt he was being a little too deferential in trying to be a good teammate and not make any waves. RJ's simply too talented, and getting paid far too much money, to just be some kind of wallflower. Starting him alongside Hairston, where RJ essentially becomes the 2-guard, was a smart move on Pop's behalf and it seemed to get RJ in the right mindset.
So Pop's new shtick, ya know: 'George is my favorite player.', yeah, he needs to keep that up. Some things you don't even need to see to know they're there. Pulling up on a 3-on-3 break and shooting from 15'; calling for or coming off a screen and letting it fly, without hesitation, for early offense; being aggressive on both ends of the court in taking it to talented veterans; and being vocal enough to hear his presence even over the airwaves. To say these developments for George are encouraging, at this early stage, would be a gross understatement.
Well, Malik finally got his start; and he sure didn't seem to disappoint. The defense seemed more or less what we've come to expect, but his play-making and passing sure goes to another level when he's on the floor with the big boys. When he's usually given an opportunity to show what he can do, it's usually with players that are pretty much in his same boat fighting for a roster spot; players that dictate he do a little more than he's probably capable of at his stage. Instead, he's able to receive the second or third pass, make a move against a recovering defense, and than attack the seams for offense of his own or a nifty pass to a teammate. He's a little like a first-year running-quarterback at this point: Give him one or two reads, and don't make things too complicated to where it stifles his athletic talent. Brett Brown's comments after the game, in regards to Malik, were both encouraging and worrisome; if you're the Hairston fan I am. He compliments him by saying he's 'all-day, every-day' and a good teammate that has a lot of fans on the coaching staff, and he even goes as far as to say he's a real Spur in his professionalism and demeanor, but the way he ended with saying Malik was in a really tough spot and that it was a really unenviable task for him to make an NBA roster.. Well, it didn't sound too promising. Hopefully it was nothing more than him being cognizant of players like Williams and Jerrells, whom he'd like to give a fair shot, and their feelings as they try to make the team, but it just sounded a little foreboding.
Mahinmi seems to be figuring things out a bit; I thought it was kinda noteworthy how he mentioned the Euroleague's rules for screening had him in some bad habits that were causing him foul-trouble in the NBA. He says he's watched and learned from it after seeing the tape, and stated he wouldn't be having those problems from here on out. Cross your fingers and hope for the best; which would be continued health and plenty of court time. The guy can really get to the line and put fouls on people, though..
It was nice to hear Williams play well, or to at least have a stand-out stretch, and to have the man who gave Atlas a job continue doing his thing -- even some solid moments from Tim and 'Dyess with the high-low and Ratliff with the D, so all-in-all it was a pretty decent outing.
Oh, and that other rookie..
Not too shabby.
Blake Griffin really seems to be almost a bigger, more athletic, and higher-energy version of Boozer to me; Boozer on steroids, if you will. It's really hard not to be impressed with the player he is, much less the player he could potentially be. I wouldn't go crazy with the hyperbole after a game like tonight, at least not yet, -- the defense individually just isn't there for the Spurs' bigs at this stage and he didn't even see a double until he entered a couple minutes into the 4th -- but it definitely looks like the Clippers finally found a way to not screw it up; Olowakandi he ain't.

It doesn't look good for Haislip. After a DNP-CD, he doesn't get a lot of minutes in this game. Pop is going to trim the rotation for the next game and I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the doghouse.
Aside of Blair, "unproven" players who look the closest to be part of the rotation are Hairston and Mahinmi. It will be interesting to see if Pop continue to give then a chance or will go with the experienced players (Bogans and Ratliff).

I'm still scratching my head over Bogans. I do understand that he was probable brought in for insurance since we did not know how far along some of our young players have come. However if Spurs kept him and waived Hairston, and or Hilsap to keep him it would be a big damper to such a great off-season.
Boguns has shown absolutely nothing to jeopardies losing young developing talent. He even looks like he could be a huge liability out there ,on offence at least.

Some really head scratching choices for music, but great. 'The Touch' is a monster of a song. Epic. But anyways, yes Blair should have been cast in the original movie as either 'Unicron', or 'Ultra Magnus' just cause I like the name.

Popovich raves about Blake Griffin (http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-clippers-fyi16-2009oct16,0,1825845.story)
After a 23-point effort against the Spurs, the Clippers rookie has the respect of the San Antonio coach.
By Lisa Dillman
The first player off the bus when it rolled into the parking lot of the sun-splashed Trump National Golf Club late Thursday afternoon was none other than Blake Griffin.
Firsts are dotting the career landscape of the young Clipper, the NBA's No. 1 overall draft pick in June.
A first meeting against icon Tim Duncan of the San Antonio Spurs. A first exhibition start. And a first all-out rave from an opposing coach.
First, the rave:
Either Griffin was being his usual humble self or he hadn't been on the Internet all day because he seemed unaware of the compliment from Spurs Coach Gregg Popovich.
"He's a monster," Popovich told reporters after the Clippers beat the Spurs, 93-90, on Wednesday in San Antonio. "He deserved to be picked where he was picked, that's for sure."
Griffin smiled after being sufficiently reassured that monster was meant in the most complimentary way.
"That's cool; humbling," Griffin said. "For somebody like that . . . somebody who has coached a lot of guys. Makes me feel good."
A day later, he was still inspired by having gone head to head against an All-Star fixture. Griffin remembered watching Duncan play in Duncan's first year in the league.
"It's weird, because you dream about it and you think about it," Griffin said. "But then when it actually happens, or is about to happen, you're like, 'Whoa. Is this actually about to happen?' "
Griffin had 23 points and seven rebounds in 29 minutes and was in the starting lineup for the first time this exhibition season.
Clippers Coach Mike Dunleavy noticed the difference in Griffin.
"He seemed more relaxed, more comfortable," he said. "We talked about that being the case going forward. He played all facets of the game: ran the floor, defended well, rebounded . . . just played a good all-around game.
"The part of his game that has come on strong has been his outside shooting. He's got a great first step, great explosion, and if he can set it up with his outside shot that's tremendous."
Griffin said being in the starting lineup made a significant difference. "I was actually more relaxed because I was out there right off the bat," he said.
He was respectful of Duncan but not frozen by his reputation.
"I don't think Blake is going to be intimidated by anybody," Dunleavy said. "I think he's respectful and he's just going to play his game. He's got the confidence to know that he has a big game. He plays with a big effort so that is going to make it hard for him to have a bad game.
"It's hard for a guy who puts out tremendous effort and hustle to have a bad game, or to ever be booed by fans. Fans appreciate hard work and hustle and they identify with those guys."

Give Blake his due. You know he had Blair in his sights tonight.
Nobody is taking anything away from Griffin. He has mad game. He will be a better all round player than Blair. As far as having Blair in his sights I am not sure what you mean. Griffin played with the 1st team, played more minutes and had plays run for him. And he produced...no one can argue with 10 for 14 shooting. Blair was brought in for rebounding and outrebounded Griffin by 5 even though he played 5 fewer minutes. He scored 11 points even though no plays were run for him. For his niche, Blair is quite obviously the better player. With Duncan, Parker, Manu, RJ, McDyess, Mason, etc. he is the perfect fit for the Spurs.
