View Full Version : 6-Year-Old Boy Stuck in Homemade Helium Balloon

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - A 6-year-old boy climbed into a homemade balloon aircraft and floated away Thursday, forcing officials to scramble to figure out how to rescue the boy.

Live footage from a local TV helicopter showed the balloon gliding quickly through the air.

Larimer County sheriff's spokeswoman Eloise Campanella says the device, which is shaped like a flying saucer, has the potential to rise to 10,000 feet. Sheriff's officials last saw the device floating south of Milliken, which is about 40 miles north of Denver.

Campanella says the 6-year-old climbed into the access door and was in the airborne device.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus says the agency has been notified and it was unclear whether traffic controllers had picked it up on radar.

From the video i don't see how he got in or if he can see out. That thing is moving fast and will not land softly.

CNN) -- Officials are trying to rescue a 6-year-old boy who climbed into a balloon-like experimental aircraft built by his parents and floated into the sky over eastern Colorado.

Margie Martinez of the Weld County Sheriff's Office said a sibling saw the boy climb into the basket before the balloon took off. Since the door on the balloon was unlocked, Martinez said it's possible the boy had fallen out.

The balloon appeared to be a saucer-shaped, Mylar-coated helium balloon, not unlike a party balloon. The craft was drifting eastward, authorities said.

The helium balloon was tethered to the boy's family home in Fort Collins, the Larimer County Sheriff's Department said. The boy got into the craft Thursday morning and undid the rope anchoring it.

The aluminum-covered, dome-shaped balloon is 20 feet long and 5 feet high, the Larimer County Sheriff's Office said. Watch the balloon float thousands of feet over Colorado »

"The structure at the bottom of the balloon that the boy is in is made of extremely thin plywood and won't withstand any kind of a crash at all," said Erik Nilsson, Larimer County Emergency Manager, according to CNN affiliate KMGH.

The Federal Aviation Administration is trying to track the aircraft on radar and has notified the Denver International Airport. Shortly after noon (2 p.m. ET), the balloon was sighted two miles south of Evans.

CNN meteorologist Chad Myers estimated the wind would keep the vessel moving at 30 mph. Authorities say the craft is about 7,000 feet above the ground.

Kathy Davis, spokeswoman for the sheriff's department, said a dispatcher received a call Thursday morning, and emergency services personnel were contacted.

Davis said a balloon company had been contacted and several media outlets offered to help track the balloon with their helicopters.

The family has described the structure as a a dome-shaped "homemade flying saucer," Larimer County Sheriff's Office Spokeswoman Kathy Davis said.

"We're trying to determine the best course of action," Davis said. "This is a first and we'll do what we need to do."

Stupid freaking parents.

Why build something to fly and make it possible to get in, but not safe to land.

The Heene family from Colorado live life on the edge. Wife Mayumi (43) and storm scientist Richard (45) take their three kids, Bradford (8), Ryo (7) and Falcon (5), out of school to go on storm chasing missions to prove Richard's theories about magnetic fields and gravity. If conditions are right, Mayumi wakes her family by shouting "Storm Approaching, Storm Approaching!" into a bullhorn. The family sleep in their clothes so they can leap out of bed and into the storm-mobile. Richard calls Mayumi his 'ninja wife'; she maintains equipment, drives the storm-mobile, films tornadoes and waits with the kids while Richard jumps on his motorbike, heads into the eye of the storm and launches rockets to measure magnetic forces. At home the family are as chaotic as a twister: the kids have no table manners and throw themselves around the house, and while Richard devotes every moment to his research, he expects Mayumi to cook, clean and run the house without any help.

I really doubt a balloon of that size has enough lift for a 6 year old. I don't think the kid was in it once it left the ground. Maybe he was playing in it and set it off, but that thing wouldn't leave the ground with more than a few pounds of weight.

I hope so, the family is saying he went in and took off though.

On Thursday morning, according to the family and officials, the boy got onto the aircraft and detached the rope holding it in place.

Police say the family's two boys were playing outside with the rest of the family inside the house. One son watched his little brother go inside the compartment and watched it take off

Ok think about this... the balloon is ~2Meters high by 7 meters across... Volume is PiDh... that is 3.14 times 14... ~42m3 (its considerably less than this because it is a disk not a cylinder...

Helium has a lift capacity of like 1.02kg/M3... so... say... 2.2 X 42 (and considerably less than this at 5000 ft altitude starting point colorado)

90lbs...

Minus the weight of the aircraft... 20lbs? Does a 6 year old weigh 70lbs?

Could it even have gotten off the ground with him in it?

I don't think so... and even if it had... he wouldn't have gotten high AT ALL...

My 2 cents is it's a set up, the dad wants attention to his work, he has submeted videos to new channels on his work on planets and storm chasing and I think they said he was on wife swap or some shit like that.

What better PR than throwing a balloon up and saying his kids in it and then the kids can't be found. They must be looking like crazy in that hood so the kid must know some super crazy hiding spot or the dad stash him for a bit.

CosmicCowboy

Ouch.

I just ran the numbers a different way and it looks like it could have been possible.

Lift of gasses varies with temperature and pressure but I am using averages.

1 liter of helium will lift 1 gram.

That converts to 16 cu ft of helium will lift 1#.

Figuring the volume of a balloon circle 20' in diameter and 5' deep I got 1570 cubic feet.

That enough to launch 98 pounds of balloon and payload.

Probably enough to carry off a 6 year old kid that weighs 50-60#.

10-15-2009, 03:55 PM

At this point it looks like best case scenario would be to find him a mile or so downrange where the box fell before the balloon got too high and he is busted up but not dead...as time passes that seems less and less likely. I'm sure they have choppers up looking for him...they know the exact wind direction, point of departure and point of landing...it won't take long to cover that flight path...

Sheriff to file criminal charges in balloon boy case

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A Colorado sheriff indicated Saturday that criminal charges probably will be filed against one or both of the parents whose 6-year-old son was said to be aboard a wayward balloon.

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden spoke to reporters to announce "significant progress" in the investigation after a second round of interviews with the family this afternoon.

The sheriff indicated the likely charges are misdemeanors and no one in the family will be arrested.

HENNE HELPER: Researcher says he worked on UFO hoax

Alderden said, given the seriousness of the incident, he would consult with the Federal Aviation Administration and other federal agencies on potential federal charges.

Alderden previously said that if the balloon ordeal was a hoax, the parents could be charged with making a false report to authorities, a low-level misdemeanor.

"We were looking at Class 3 misdemeanor, which hardly seems serious enough given the circumstances," Alderden said Saturday. "We are talking to the district attorney, federal officials to see if perhaps there aren't additional federal charges that are appropriate in this circumstance."

He said deputies wanted a search warrant for the family's home, and there would be more information at a news conference Sunday.

It wasn't clear where the family was late Saturday night. By 9 p.m., an AP reporter at the family home said the couple hadn't returned after leaving the sheriff's office. Their three sons were believed to have been at home being watched by sheriff's officials earlier in the day, but their whereabouts also weren't known to reporters in the evening.

The Heenes were expected to speak to reporters outside their home later Saturday, after a strange day that began with Richard Heene knocking on the windows of journalists camped outside his home and promising a "big announcement."

The most significant part of that article is the mention of possible Federal charges being looked into. That'll eff them over...

So long as they pay back every cent spent on this "search" and are publicly humiliated, justice is served.

http://gawker.com/5383858/exclusive-i-helped-richard-heene-plan-a-balloon-hoax

For the first time, 25-year-old researcher Robert Thomas reveals to Gawker how earlier this year he and Richard Heene drew up a master plan to generate a massive media controversy using a weather balloon. To get famous, of course.

Thomas spent several months earlier this year working on developing a reality science TV show to pitch to networks — the "show," Thomas says, that Falcon was referring to when he told CNN "We did it for the show." Among the ideas that Heene, Thomas and two others came up with for their reality TV proposal — and one that he says most intrigued Heene — involved a weather balloon modified to look like a UFO which they would launch in an attempt to drum up media interest in both the Heene family and the series he was desperate to get on the air. Still, Thomas never imagined that Heene would involve his six-year-old son in what he is certain was a "global media hoax" to further Richard Heene's own celebrity. Thomas' story of his time with Heene, based on an interview with Ryan Tate, follows below. It's a fascinating account and after he publicly offered to sell his story, we paid him for it.

Wow this is almost like a game thread,

My 2 cents is it's a set up, the dad wants attention to his work, he has submeted videos to new channels on his work on planets and storm chasing and I think they said he was on wife swap or some shit like that.

What better PR than throwing a balloon up and saying his kids in it and then the kids can't be found. They must be looking like crazy in that hood so the kid must know some super crazy hiding spot or the dad stash him for a bit.

I called that shit. *pats back*
