INDEPENDENCE: The flu bug continued to chomp away at the Cavaliers' roster Thursday.

While several players — including LeBron James — will probably return to action as the team swings through Texas for two preseason games against the Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs, three more have succumbed to the virus.

Forward J.J. Hickson and guard Andre Barrett were diagnosed with flulike symptoms and will not travel with the team this weekend. Forward Jawad Williams, who is suffering the same effects, will make the trip.

LeBron could play after swine flu bout (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/10/lebron-could-pl.html)
By Jeff McDonald

Reigning league MVP LeBron James was a full participant in this morning's shootaround after a bout with what is believed to be H1N1 virus earlier this week. HIs participation in tonight's preseason game against the Spurs at the AT&T Center will be solely up to the discretion of coach Mike Brown.

He was among six Cleveland players treated for flu-like symptoms this week. James, Darnell Jackson and Coby Karl tested positive for influenza A on Wednesday. H1N1 -- aka, the swine flu -- is a strain of influenza A. Those three players have been tested for H1N1, but the results have not yet come back.

Two other sick players -- J.J. Hickson and Andre Barrett -- did not travel with the team on its two-game Texas road swing.

The Cavaliers gave all members of their traveling party antiviral medication, and several players were wearing medical masks when they disembarked their bus from the San Antonio airport Thursday night.

James, who missed two days of practice with illness, did not address the media after this morning's shootaround at the AT&T Center. Before the Cavs left for Texas, James told reporters in Cleveland his sickness had passed.

One of the few players unaffected by the Cavs recent flu outbreak? New center Shaquille O'Neal.

Shaq wasn't surprised.

"I don't get the flu," he said after this morning's shootaround. "I come from a military family."

LeBron James expected to play tonight as Cleveland Cavaliers recover from flu (http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/10/lebron_james_expected_to_play.html)
By Brian Windhorst
Cleveland Plain-Dealer

SAN ANTONIO -- The Cavaliers are on the mend.

The team is nearing full strength after the flu bug that hit this week appears to have mostly run its course. LeBron James took part in shootaround this morning at AT&T Center and will probably play against the Spurs tonight.

In fact all the Cavs with the flu are better, including J.J. Hickson and Andre Barrett, both of whom might join the team tomorrow in Dallas.

Also Mo Williams is planning on starting tonight after missing two games with a sore groin. It is also possible that Delonte West will get his first playing time of the season on this two-game trip to Texas.

Pop taking night off (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/10/pop-taking-nigh.html)
By Jeff McDonald

LeBron James might be good to go for tonight's game. Gregg Popovich, meanwhile, is taking the night off.

In what has become somewhat of a preseason tradition, the Spurs head coach has opted to turn coaching duties over to his staff of assistants tonight against the Cavaliers.

Lead assistant Mike Budenholzer will coach the first half. Brett Brown will take the third quarter, and Don Newman the fourth.

Well, since they're not really playing a regular season rotation, hopefully that means a second half with extended minutes for Ian and Blair; hell, I'd like the Spurs to throw Haislip on James to see what he's got..

And, really, the 2 fouls he picked up on James were in the open court after a James rebound; nobody's gonna get out of that situation without fouling or giving up an uncontested bucket.

He did get James to miss the only shot he took in a one-on-one situation, fwtw..
