If there is one moment Matt Bonner would like expunged from his basketball existence, one play erased from the record as if it had never happened, it came less than a minute into the Spurs' 105-98 preseason victory over Cleveland on Friday night.

Shaquille O'Neal — he of the four NBA championship rings, the one MVP award and the sure-fire Hall of Fame credentials — rose to attempt the type of dunk he'd been unleashing in NBA arenas since Bonner was still running amok at the Concord (N.H.) YMCA. Bonner, slipping in from behind the play, ascended to meet 325 pounds of 37-year-old Diesel.

This time, for perhaps the only time, Bonner won.

The Spurs center slapped away O'Neal's dunk attempt, then reacted with the exact opposite of the Dikembe Mutombo finger wag.

“I just tried not to make eye contact, basically,” Bonner said.

Asked again and again about the play after the game, Bonner did everything but blame the block on Tim Duncan. Bonner has his reasons for his humility.

“We have to play those guys again,” Bonner said. “I don't want to give him any reason to come after me.”

These are all signs it is still the preseason. Bonner swats O'Neal. Replacement officials call a zillion fouls resulting in a billion free throws (or, Friday night, 61 fouls for 78 foul shots). And Gregg Popovich takes the night off from the bench, leaving a trio of assistants to sweat the whistle-happy referee crew.

Lead assistant Mike Budenholzer coached the Spurs to a 47-40 lead at half. Brett Brown took the reigns in the third, and increased the Spurs' lead to 10.

That left Don Newman to close down the game in the fourth.

“They were calling him Mariano Rivera back there,” Budenholzer said.

Of course, Newman was at somewhat of a disadvantage. He didn't have Duncan and Tony Parker in his arsenal, which is sort of like sending in Rivera without his fastball and splitter.

On a night when Manu Ginobili and Richard Jefferson also sat, Duncan and Parker took over early. Parker had 22 points and seven assists in 25 minutes, and did not play in the fourth.

Duncan enjoyed his finest night of the preseason, going for 13 points and nine rebounds in a shade less than 20 minutes. He did not play after halftime.

Instead, Newman had to hold on with a lineup lifted out of the Las Vegas summer league — George Hill, Malik Hairston, Marcus Williams, Ian Mahinmi and DeJuan Blair.

The Spurs also had to hold on through a litany of meaningless timeouts and purposeful fouls in the final 11 seconds, as Cavs assistant Michael Malone — who replaced head coach Mike Brown at half — attempted to extend the game.

“I thought we played well, considering it's preseason and guys are not fully at 100 percent, and we're still playing a lot of guys,” Spurs forward Antonio McDyess said. “Overall, we played well with the guys we put out there.”

Cleveland's LeBron James, the reigning league MVP, looked both in midseason form and in pre-flu form. James, who battled a bout of what might have been the H1N1 virus earlier this week, had 22 points in less than 20 minutes — including eight straight to end the second quarter.

After the game, James said he “still felt fatigued.” The Spurs weren't buying it.

“He looked well to me,” Budenholzer said.

So did O'Neal, the Cavs' keystone summertime acquisition. He had eight points and 12 rebounds, and made 3 of his last 5 shots after starting 0 for 6.

Bonner, of course, had a hand in Shaq's slow start. Not that he'll cop to it today.

“I'd call it the luckiest play of my career,” Bonner said of his block. “I was behind him. He didn't see me. It was all luck.”

Then Bonner shrugged, perhaps with visions of a March 8 rematch dancing in his head.

“Seriously,” he said. “I'm trying to take as little credit as possible.”

San Antonio Spurs defeat Cleveland Cavaliers as coaches take break (http://www.cleveland.com/cavs/index.ssf/2009/10/san_antonio_spurs_defeat_cleve.html)

San Antonio -- A bunch of players are out with minor injuries or sickness, a handful are resting because it is the preseason, and this week alone NBA head coaches have racked up $95,000 in fines for criticizing the replacement referees.

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich surveyed this scene and decided it was fine time to take an evening off and leave the coaching to his assistants.

Don't say that one of Popovich's star pupils, Cavaliers coach Mike Brown, has stopped learning him his old boss. Brown liked the idea so much that after the first half of the Cavs' preseason game with the Spurs he decided to join him and turn things over to assistant Mike Malone.

One could picture them with their feet up with cold beverages as the second half dragged on.

There was some work being done as the Cavs lost to the Spurs, 105-98. But it was limited, sort of like the interest from the head coaches. Perhaps they knew, as there were 61 fouls called and 78 combined free throws.

The next time these two teams see each other will be five months from now and both are figuring to be much more interested then. Both are on the short list of championship contenders this season. However, this time around wasn't even a proper dress rehearsal.

For just the second time this preseason the Cavs did have their three top weapons on the floor at the same time. LeBron James returned after missing a game with the flu. Mo Williams returned after missing two games with a sore groin muscle. And Shaquille O'Neal has been around for the whole preseason.

But with J.J. Hickson back in Cleveland with the flu, Anderson Varejao resting a sore wrist and Daniel Gibson nursing a bruised tailbone, it was still impossible for Brown to work on developing his rotation. With the plan to rest James and perhaps O'Neal tonight night in Dallas, it seems Brown's goal is to use the final two preseason games next week to get ready for the real thing.

Despite struggling to catch his breath at times as he recovers from the illness, James had the best offensive game of the practice games. In just 19 minutes, James put up 22 points and showed off his whole offensive game, from drives to jumpers to alley-oops. He made 7 of 14 shots.

O'Neal found mixed success against Tim Duncan. He pulled down 13 rebounds in 24 minutes but went just 3 of 11 from the field, way off his standard. Some of it was because of Duncan's position and size and some of it was just O'Neal having an off shooting night. He is 22 of 44 shooting in the five preseason games.

Duncan had 13 points and nine rebounds in 20 minutes.

Williams also had some good moments, putting up 15 points with six assists. Late in the first half he tweaked his groin and left the floor, showing it is still bothering him. He also had all sorts of trouble keeping up with Tony Parker, the Spurs speedster who had 22 points and seven assists.

Jamario Moon had a good showing off the bench for the Cavs, scoring 12 points on 4-of-7 shooting.

The Spurs sat key players Richard Jefferson and Manu Ginobili to give them some preseason rest.

Game reset

SPURS 105, CAVS 98

Preseason game No. 5, at AT&T Center

What happened

Both teams were missing key players because of rest and injury and, by the end of the game, their head coaches. LeBron James, Shaquille O'Neal and Mo Williams combined for 45 points, 21 rebounds and seven assists as they all played together for just the second time in the preseason.

The star

Showing the flu could not hold him down, James put up 22 points in just 19 minutes with six rebounds.

Highlight

Williams hitting James with a half-court alley-oop in the first half, just like it was midseason.

Lowlight

Not a quality performance by the replacement officials. Was an uneven, foul-heavy game.
