View Full Version : Song of the Decade

Spurminator

What song defines the decade? Not necessarily the best song of the decade (but it should be good) and not necessarily the most popular (but it should be somewhat well known).

Pitchfork says "B.O.B." by Outkast, which frankly isn't a bad pick. "Hey Ya" would be a good pick as well.

Others I'd nominate:

"The Rising" - Bruce Springsteen
"Seven Nation Army" - White Stripes
"Holiday" - Green Day
"Clocks" - Coldplay
"Feel Good Inc." - Gorillaz
"Take Me Out" - Franz Ferdinand

I know it's a bit of a poppy list but there are enough snobby indie lists on the web already. I doubt many people are going to remember the aughts as the decade of The Knife or LCD Soundsystem, but maybe that's just me.

B.O.B is a good one, the Gorillaz and FF ones are also pretty high up there

I don't like the song but "American idiot" from Green Day was huge this decade.

I've always thought of this question. Like if (more like when) VH1 has the top 100 songs of this decade what will be #1.

If we're talking about Gorillaz then it HAS to be "Clint Eastwood".

Coldplay-"Clocks"

50 Cent-"In da club" (you remember how huge that song was for that length of time?!)

Linkin Park-"In the end"

Eminem-"Lose yourself"

Outkast-"Hey ya"

If I go for personal choice, I like:

"Boulevard of broken dreams" Green Day
"What goes around comes around" Justin Timberlake
"Lose yourself" Eminem
"Woman" Wolfmother
"I bet you look good on the dance floor" Artic monkeys

The '00 sucked as far as music goes.

That's cause we're still living in them you doucher. I'm pretty sure most people thought music was better the previous decade. I'm pretty sure during the 90s everyone who grew up in the 80s was ripping on the 90s for sucking. Let time tell

^ I was a teenager throughout most of the '00 and thought just about all of today's music sucks. I know it's my opinion, but I can't imagine anybody listening to these songs like they do to some classics from the previous decades.

The good songs in the 00's weren't popular... or not decade popular.

Miley Cyrus - Party In the USA is a pretty good choice.

But out of those spurminator listed, it would probably be 7 Nation Army. The riff is pretty memorable. It's even become a popular chant at sports events.

And it was borderline decade, but I'd go real slim shady. This song is what got millions of white kids listening to rap and completely changed a lot. Either that or lose yourself, but IMO Eminem has had more of an impact this decade than any other artist.

Yea, It's a party in the USA

BEP had the best NFL performance that I can remember. I think Goodell has already contacted them about doing the Super Bowl half time show after seeing them do the Pre game for Tennessee and Pitt.

Dude fat Kelly Clarkson would be a bigger draw than BEP as a Super Bowl half time show.

Mexican is trolling here, but BEP is about the most popular group there is now.

No need to hate Mike Tomlin for being a Super Bowl champion and having the best band of the decade.

I know what you're saying. The majority of the music on my ipod is music from the 70s and 90s even though I was born in 89. I believe the reason for the "decline" in the quality of music isn't cause music just sucks these days, but rather cause we have access to music from any time period for free with youtube, limewire, etc. These days there aren't as many big names out there cause we can just listen to some music from some other time for free. If it wasn't for youtube and limewire I seriously doubt I would have just randomly discovered Pink Floyd; rather, I would have actually went out and bought what's hot right then. Now apply that mentality to most Americans and thats the situation we have. Not that music sucks these days, but the only modern music you do hear is shitty rap

I dunno. The lil piano riff from "Clocks" is pretty "memorable"...meaning you can't seem to beat it outta your head once it's in there.

Haha, that's a good one JT. Not quite though. I'm much more of a rock guy (and of course 80s) than rap-though i still do love some rap before the last few years when it turned into , well i dont even know what to call it. But i would agree "in da club" and "lose yourself" or "the real slim shady" were all very huge songs especially in da club i mean you really heard that for a year straight at every bar/club you went in. It was just massive. Outkast is prob my fav rap group ever (wu tang close 2nd), and i would say B.O.B. prob would be my pick. I can't believe someone put "chop suey".....god I hate system of a down. For rock Im not sure I'd have to think a little on that one but i wouldn't say its any green day song....I might say a Korn song like falling away from me-they were really groundbreaking early 00s. I guess you could throw in a coldplay song in there. The 90s were much better rock wise imo

alright j, i agree with everything u said except that Eminem blows. How is he not a good rapper? Do you only listen to the mtv/radio released singles? I bet you do. Maybe you should pop in one of his discs-shit even his last one-listen to medicine ball, same song and dance, and underground and then tell me he's "only good when mad at someone". If you know em at all he always raps to a story, not many awful rappers can say that. Well i guess you can be impressed with the bs thats out there now. what country? That doesn't sound all the same does it? Ha, wow i expect a good response now GayT :lol
