Phillies in 6 or 7. I think the phils have better clutch hitters up and down the lineup. Not likely pedro will have any redemption so I think he loses a game. It would be nice though! rollins, howard, and the flyin hawaiian...real clutch

That's about 40 wins between them when they are hot. What kind of front office lets the both of those guys go?

Not that Shapiro should be defended, but the kind of front office that lets both of those guys go is a small market team that doesn't win games and has about zero chance of retaining either of them once they become free agents. They wouldn't have let them go if they felt like they had even a half way decent chance of resigning either of them.

As for the World Series, like many, I think this is probably one of the better World Series there has been in a while.

Yankees actually look like they match-up well against the Phillies. They have two starting left handed pitchers to counter the heavy left handed bats in the Philly line-up, they have the offensive firepower to match them, and they have the stronger bullpen. Should be an exciting series.

I got Yankees in 6.

How about the Earth opening up and swallowing both teams and it is a draw? I was looking forward to one of the local teams making it to the WS, but alas this may be a great duel between a traditional AL team and an AL team playing in the NL. If the Phillies can manage to take one of the first two at the New Yankee Cracked Stadium, they have a real good chance at taking this in 6. They have the bats to challenge the Yankees as was not the case with the Angels. Only 2 other teams have repeated in the past 20 years and that was the Yankees of the late 90's and the Blue Jays of the early 90's. I'm going to think this will go 7 games and I hope the Phils win. But I don't really care.

I agree CC was as good as gone. I think they could have re-signed Lee, though. Who in my opinion, is better.

Well, Lee wasn't stellar beginning the season after his Cy Young winning campaign in '08, so the Indians had to consider moving him since they were hit hard by the economic times. I don't think Lee is better than Sabbathia, but in the playoffs--they've both been really good for their respective teams.

But I'm with you on this--watching this will be unbearable.

The Yankee implosion is only beginning. They will probably win game 2 due to it being a desperation game. Once the series shifts back to Philly, the Yanks will be lucky to pull out 1 more victory. Enough is enough with these blown calls

http://l.yimg.com/a/i/us/sp/ed/experts/passan.png By Jeff Passan (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/expertsarchive;_ylt=AhTY.J4WHmlobax3kBZxAVoHU84F?a uthor=Jeff+Passan), Yahoo! Sports 7 hours, 55 minutes ago

NEW YORK – Umpires added two more tick marks to their overflowing register of screw-ups Thursday night. These came in Game 2 of a World Series in which Major League Baseball broke from protocol and brought in a specific crew of veteran arbiters to ensure the miscues of the first two rounds wouldn’t dare find their way into games of such importance.
So, uh, oops?
It’s laughable at this point. It really is. It’s confounding to see players and managers and executives pooh-pooh the idea of instant replay when MLB is approaching a dozen missed calls in its most important month of the season. And it’s horrifying to see games turn not on the actions of players but of the men charged with enforcing the rules. And it’s sad that only an epic World Series will save this month from being remembered for the dodgy eyesight of middle-aged men.
Welcome to Blindtober, where everything that’s wrong is right.

Umpires discuss a disputed call in the seventh inning.
(AP Photo/David J. Phillip)

“Utley was safe,” Charlie Manuel said, and he said it out of nowhere. The Philadelphia Phillies (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/phi/;_ylt=AveenUdSTWpv_bkbydg46msHU84F)’ manager was trying to shake off his team’s 3-1 loss to the New York Yankees (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/teams/nyy/;_ylt=Aq_hP12z4l27YwH9c3zlL5cHU84F) that evened the series at a game apiece, and he couldn’t get past the fact that Chase Utley (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7072/;_ylt=AiQ.YZLPkdt3ww_NxsRn6SsHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7072/news;_ylt=AloispBR9BT7MCW0g2xzMy4HU84F), his second baseman, had grounded into a double play. Because Utley hadn’t. Oh, Brian Gorman called him out at first base – and since MLB is too pigheaded to expand replays beyond home run calls, the call stood, even though Utley’s foot beat Derek Jeter’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5406/;_ylt=AiPTLoS50q_kyQM9a2jffjcHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5406/news;_ylt=AkPE.64ugivn.DsPIl9YktIHU84F) throw.
“Go look,” Manuel said. “Yeah. He was safe.”
Had Gorman determined so, up would’ve stepped Ryan Howard (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7437/;_ylt=Aq2Zkyj1CR.o1NNKT1ockFYHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7437/news;_ylt=AhXi98hgQd.2vZ31nhauYJcHU84F), the world’s best power hitter, with men on first and third base and two outs in the eighth inning of a two-run World Series game, to face Mariano Rivera (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5400/;_ylt=AqNgrK_.vw8U4oAP_LQ2ZtcHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5400/news;_ylt=AmPvcM1RmyHQYtH8JtDhCvUHU84F), the best closer baseball has seen, and certainly the most effective postseason pitcher. Bud Selig drools over such matchups. Of course, the commissioner spent a few minutes earlier in the day explaining why expanded replay doesn’t fly in his world, so he retreated back to his cocoon robbed of an epic moment in waiting because we’re supposed to accept human error as an excuse.
Never mind that technology allows us to fix it. Technology, in the antiquated world of baseball, is looked upon as a bogeyman. So, in that spirit, let’s, for a moment, renounce it all. Spell check? Froget ti. Cars? America could use the exercise. The Internet? Shut it down. Except for MLB.com. Because that’s worth a billion and change, and Bud wouldn’t want to forfeit that in the name of some misguided maxim.
Umpiring this postseason falls under such scrutiny because technology spoils us with the right call almost every time. Sure, there are situations that are inconclusive. Most are rather clear. When something so obvious remains in place despite your eyes telling you otherwise, it feels wrong and unfair, and any sympathy toward the parties who allow their poor work to be supported by flimsy reasoning disintegrates.
Not that it makes things better, but bad calls did go both ways Thursday. In the sixth inning, Johnny Damon (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5484/;_ylt=AspyjOacb1WREr4r2u3_cMAHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5484/news;_ylt=AlBRea1mpV2MWs8RF_t6QbkHU84F) hit a sinking line drive to first base. Howard plucked the ball off the ground – the dirt in front of his glove kicked into the air – and fired to second base immediately, as clear a signal as possible that he hadn’t caught the ball. His throw went wide. All runners were assumed safe. Except Gorman – him again – said Howard caught the ball, which made its way back to first base for a double play.
“Did I catch it?” Howard said. “Well, they called him out.”
And he winked.
Now, maybe something got caught in Howard’s right eye. Damn if it didn’t look like a wink, though, a nod to those whose displeasure with bad calls demands more reaction from baseball than putting together a crew of veterans who still need a safety net. Nearly every call they make is correct, and yet they’re like the long snapper, taken for granted and remembered for the ones they miss.
“I’m not saying nothing about the umpiring,” said Manuel, who then did exactly the opposite: “I’ve probably never thought umpiring was good, if you want to know the truth.”
Almost certainly the old-time umpires were no better than the newer ones. They just didn’t have cameras and super-slow-motion replays to niggle their every call. It makes replay understandable, feasible, workable.
“Then you take away from the nature of the game,” Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7104/;_ylt=Ai1gQd4q3dDMjeXRlkSWpiwHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7104/news;_ylt=Apwu0RzK6yURjQzjrGR0.zkHU84F) said. “They’re human. Everyone makes mistakes. It kills you, but again, how many times does it happen?”
Hmmm. Well, there was the non-call on a pitch that hit Brandon Inge’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6681/;_ylt=AgvesIJfxIQZcDOBRRKRfXgHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6681/news;_ylt=Ap1H7w7Z.cSZBzzWrZC4jFYHU84F) jersey with the bases loaded and the scored tied in a one-game playoff. And Joe Mauer’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7062/;_ylt=AiCTc3wD6RyjYK9oy0KZjKYHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7062/news;_ylt=AgQsFnCfTdYJcwyjQ1EuL5oHU84F) would-be double that landed about a foot inside the line but was called foul. Plus that time Jorge Posada (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5502/;_ylt=AuQmVNOwWTS9zQ4lNm5QTUcHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5502/news;_ylt=AqjBZCsiNNulFB1Sp5_ppKEHU84F) and Robinson Cano (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7497/;_ylt=AiX1jw44E5njj41TGZtnleAHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7497/news;_ylt=AtqjsWVaPgdCziM7qy9_RckHU84F) were both tagged off the base during the ALCS but only Posada was called out. Oh, and when Nick Swisher (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7435/;_ylt=AjmqLbIdmU_LsmtL_8Lp.0kHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7435/news;_ylt=AqyJfQQOrJpPYH4NKn0BlFAHU84F) was thrown out and called safe, then left on time during a sacrifice fly and was called out – that was Doublemint fun. Can’t forget Ronnie Belliard (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5765/;_ylt=Al1HzDLzbTQINHpzBMwVXKoHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/5765/news;_ylt=AsnpkDEvnQruZTUY1h8XiRoHU84F) clearly being tagged out and ruled safe. And two poor calls at first base against Boston in the ALDS. To come full circle, Utley fouled a ball off himself (dead ball), ran it out and got beaten by the throw to first anyway (out) and was declared safe.
“Well, are you going to replay every damn play?” Victorino said. “If you’re going to do that every play, we’re going to play seven-hour games.”
No. No, no, no. That kind of extrapolation doesn’t work here. A solution comes in moderation. A red flag. Twice a game. There usually aren’t more bad calls than that, and if there are, MLB takes a long, hard look at that umpire. Use the challenge flags too early and it’s a mistake that a manager will rue.
This is about the correct, accurate call. Everybody deserves it. If it takes a little longer, it is worth the time, the hassle, the aggravation. Go to the bathroom. Nuke a Hot Pocket. Clip your fingernails. Three minutes isn’t long. Every one of these calls was quite obvious on replay, and almost all would affect the fortunes of the season’s most critical games.
Instead, the World Series turns into a game as much of what-if as what was. For the brilliance of A.J. Burnett (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6314/;_ylt=AnknFGxBIrun9Qfx.rHHu9wHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6314/news;_ylt=AmqT_.C.a9KuCIhZ1mDqRc8HU84F) in the face of a potential 0-2 deficit, there was the foot of Utley touching the bag before the ball hit Mark Teixeira’s (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6788/;_ylt=AkxLQVUTHxX4i_QE99qaI8EHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6788/news;_ylt=Ai2jSE02.BuCFY5uiUfGzIIHU84F) glove. And for the clutch home run of Hideki Matsui (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7042/;_ylt=AmzpaqE1hl2BmzuugeNsSy0HU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7042/news;_ylt=Ap_6wNXFgDbwUGevCs16jMgHU84F) off Pedro Martinez (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4875/;_ylt=AmEI_CTuUXqtMEfpKr2rrIIHU84F)(notes) (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/4875/news;_ylt=AnGUQeVWLBQC9NN0BYzNviAHU84F), there was Howard’s glove clearly not scooping the ball before it bathed in dirt. It’s not yin and yang, either. The two don’t balance out.
They leave us wondering just how much more of this baseball can take before adopting the rational point of view. The game is too good to get broadsided by something so fallible as eyeballs. So long as replay tops the offseason agenda, such a good-faith gesture will help temporarily. Until then, a kind request of the men in blue, who really try to make the right calls, as the World Series moves to Philadelphia for Game 3 and the calendar turns.
Please, don’t let it be Blindvember, too.

If the Phillies lose game 4, this series is pretty much done. Yanks will wrap it up in game 5 if Phillies lose game 4. I'm really not a fan of the instant replay in baseball. If you're going to have instant replay for home runs then you should have instant replay for everything. All or nothing.

I remember someone saying something about Phillies NL pitching being "too much" for either of the AL teams coming out of the ALCS.

...yeah, whoops...

So its known, I hate both teams and cities (and their fans). I dont care who wins because I lose as a hater no matter what.

Yankees just have too much offense, too many bats and seeing Pettite drive one in was classic. But all Philly needs to do is win tonight and all the shock and awe of game 3 goes away with a quickness.

I don't understand why people hate the Yankees so much, sure I hate team, but if they are playing and my team is not I really don't care who win, I'd just wish they would all drop dead on the field.

Hope Yankees go in for the kill tonight, got to beat the Phillies

Yeah, having the most clutch closer in MLB history works against the Yanks.

After todays game, I can see the Phillies winning games 6 and 7. Yanks are up 3-2 due to their bats. At the end of the day, you need solid clutch pitching. The O will only get you so far. If the Yanks are to win this series, it will be due to their pitching. It doesn't matter if they are in New York or not. If the Yanks pitching can't get it together, they will lose this series. The bats can only get you so far. At the end of the day, you need solid clutch pitching. I am not sold on the Yanks having that.

why is it call the world series if only teams from the states are playing?

I hope you're right, but I don't see them losing two straight games in New York, however, if they do, it'll be almost as awesome as the Red Sox winning it all seeing them choke so hard. If they blow a 3-1 series lead we can all expect a massive hangover the next season.

Worst case scenario for the Yanks is CC pitching in game 7.

Theyre winning it all. I mean, cmon, Burnette didnt even last 3 innings. See that happening with Pettitte (never realized his name has 4 "t's")? Or Sabathia?

I think it was obvious once Burnette was pulled the Yanks were just looking to get back to New York as quickly as possible. They still made it semi-close with some good hitting, but just couldnt overcome the HUGE head start the Phils were given.

BTW, Utley is the sheeeeeeeeeeet.

RedsLakers24
11-03-2009, 03:06 PM
Utley is a beast, i dont know why but i think we will see a game 7, Andy Pettite pitching in 3 days rest, at his age is not good, but yankees offense could win the game

I will be crying with tears of joy from watching the Yanks implode in the world series. I can just feel a Phillies comeback. The Phillies pitching will be on fire the next 2 games. Yanks bats will go cold and Philly will repeat.

I knew the Yanks were done in 2004 after AROD slapped the ball out of the first basemans hand in the ALCS. I am hoping to see a defining moment of implosion tomorrow or Thursday night.

I can see Pedro pitching a nice game tomorrow but Hamels? Dude is an absolute mess. I think even if it goes to a game seven the Phillies are fucked cause of Hamels. They should have pitched Lee in game four so they had him in game seven. If your the Phillies you have to go down with your best pitcher out there which is obviously Lee.

True, there is less conspiracy

But the thing is that in the MLB, teams can buy a championship because there is no salary cap.
Not to mention the steroids problem

Yeah is baseball teams can buy a championship, but that doesn't mean they all do. Some do then more kind of like some NBA teams have won more finals then others. I don't follow baseball as much as basketball through the years, but I say I'm gonna have to start I'm getting sick of all the NBA players like Kobe, Lebron, Dirk, etc being on good teams and everyone talking about them like they are the only players in the game. I hears about the same NBA teams over and over, at least in MLB I hear about different teams more, but that is just me. Maybe if they talk about the Hornets, Thunder, and Nets more I might start liking basketball more again

Yeah, one thing I hate about the NBA is the fact that we always hear about the same guys/teams.
It's much less the case in baseball.

However, I still hate Bud Selig for not even trying to save the Montreal Expos

agreed if we didn't hear about the same players over and over then Basketball would be my favorite sport again. I like basketball as a sport the most outside of major league sports. College is much better
