This is one of his goals of his going into one of the most important seasons of Duncan's career. I'm so happy his priorities are in order.

Jeez. Overreaction, much?

By your standards, Parker and Ginobili should immediately divorce their wives for daring to have interests outside the game.

I still don't get it.

Players have lots of gameday routines. Some may have a nap. Some may play cards or bring out their iPods or game consoles.

Only the incredibly dedicated or obsessed would spend the entire gameday watching film or going over coaching instructions.

If you're going to knock Bonner for not being incredibly dedicated or obsessed, then my original point still stands.

I thought Matt did a pretty good writing job. As a sandwich lover myself, I can see the appeal in looking for the best one from all the towns they visit.
As for this being a distraction from performing on the court, I seriously doubt it. It still amazes me to see the vitriol on this forum for role players like Bonner and Finely who are just doing what they are told to do without a lot of complaining. Funny, but I thought that was what role players were supposed to do.

this is great - my favorite sandwich chain is thundercloud - wonder what matt's SA choice is

People hating on this is interesting. NBA players taking time to connect with fans on Facebook - giving levels of access that simply weren't feasible before blogging and social networking proliferated - and yet people bitch and moan that Manu is facebooking too much and Matt is eating a sandwich.

I think this is cool, and hope he keeps it up - song of the day feature included. this was fun and it takes an hour to go grab lunch and 20 minutes to write up a piece on it for us fans to read. So I don't think it destroys the previous years of practice and all the prep that the team does. And it's not like he's twittering at halftime, either.

I do wish he could rebound and play D like Dennis Rodman, though. That would be great.

And I feel greater connection to Bonner after reading it (particularly with the Jagjaguwar and Secretly Canadian nods, Bonner's a fuckin' hip fella, who knew?). Matt Bonner is a cool guy. Was a good writeup. I remember when he first got here 95% of posters on here had nothing but positive things to say about adding a "hustle player" and three point shooter like him to the team. For everybody's sake, I really really hope Pop doesn't put any kind of lofty expectations on the Red Rocket this season (ala starting center in the NBA). Play him according to what his ceiling is (not like he started any more than a handful of games in TOR in two full seasons), and everybody is happy IMO. I have no personal hatred toward Bonner by any means, more so how much and how often he was used last season (an off year for our frontcourt, and team in general).

I can understand the Bonner hate when he's expected to play beyond his means. But hating him for writing a humorous piece about his love for sandwiches? Wow...that's pretty sad.

After this I have a ton more respect for Bonner. Interesting music selection, intellectual pursuit with reading (especially Fante - it's not like he's reading bad fantasy novels about dwarves and tree people), and I especially like the mention of Manu and his riddles.

Also, I was glad to see that he slammed that place for sucking.

I don't want Bonner to play alongside Tim, but I think Bonner could do quite well in the second unit along with Blair, Manu, Hill, and Finley or Hairston.

Anyway, I guess some people would feel better if Bonner goes to each city and tells the taxidriver "Just take me to the nearest Cheesecake Factory. Why? Because I need to focus on my rebounding."

Bonner is a good writer. Too good. Must of gone through an editor.

Of course it went through an editor, but I don't think they changed it much. Bonner's writing is impressive in that he notices poetic aspects of daily life, however he reveals his amateur ability when he follows cliches such as "the rule of three," or his misuse of quotation marks to draw emphasis to a particular word instead of allowing the reader to discern what was important for themselves.

If Bonner developed confidence in his own writing ability, as well as trusting that his readers are confident in him, he could be a pretty good writer.

From the postscript:

P.S. I only mention my New Balance shoes because New Balance is a Boston based company and they have sponsored me on the court for the past 2+ years. For those of you who don't know, New Balance makes very comfortable basketball sneakers. Unfortunately, I have received word that they will be phasing out basketball.

It is sad news for me. I have always been a fan of the underdog, being one myself. I love being one of only a few players in the NBA who wear New Balance. It was always a David vs. Goliath matchup against the bigger sneaker companies and it looks like this time Goliath won.

The dilemma now will be finding a new shoe sponsor. This is not an easy task for me. I am not a flashy player and garner very little attention on the court. How do I attract a new suitor? I need to raise my profile... Get some attention. I was considering growing a mullet, getting tattoos and piercing my ears. But that's not me. I also thought about dunking more in games, but that's not realistic. Who am I kidding? My insane cribbage skills and academic knowledge are of no help in this situation. If only Subway made a basketball sneaker...

Entry #5 - Moochie's, Salt Lake City
by Matt Bonner

Salt Lake City might be the best city in the NBA when it comes to the quantity and variety of good sandwich shops within walking distance to our hotel. There is a downside to this: we only play there twice a year. I suppose I can hope to face them in the playoffs but it seems quite absurd to root for a matchup based solely on the opposing city's sandwich status. But if it happens, I certainly won't complain.
So how do I choose where to eat? Last time we played the Jazz I faced this same dilemma. I had many options but wasn't sure which spot would be the one. So I just walked around and followed my gut (no pun intended). Fate intervened and led me to Boston Deli where I enjoyed an amazing sandwich with assistant coach Brett Brown. This time around I didn't leave it to fate because I received a tip from none other than our radio announcer, Bill Schoening.

Bill told a tale of a fabled sandwich shop where one could escape the cold mountain air and magically teleport back to his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (not Mississippi*). So I met Bill in the lobby and we made the four block walk to "Moochie's". His son Eric, who attends the University of Utah, was waiting there to join us for lunch. Moochie's didn't look very remarkable from the outside. I had my doubts as the three of us made our way to the entrance.

We stepped inside and I took a look around. There were tons of articles, reviews, and awards singing praise for Moochie's covering the walls. But once my eyes got past all the accolades, I realized what Bill was talking about. I saw the Phillies jerseys on the wall, the Tastykakes next to the cash register, the numerous patrons chowing down on mouth watering steak and cheeses, and I truly felt like I was in The City of Brotherly Love at an authentic cheese steak joint. And my elder lunch partner immediately transformed from Bill Schoening to "Philly Billy". Even if it was just for lunch, Bill Schoening was home.

You know what they say, "When in Rome…" Although technically I was still in Salt Lake City, I went with the obvious choice for lunch at Moochie's: a steak and cheese sandwich. I was a little worried about eating such a heavy sub the day of a game, but with seven hours to tip-off, I felt confident my digestive system could handle it. So we placed our order, grabbed our chips, beverages and desserts, and sat at an open table to wait for our sandwiches. Amazingly, our whole order was ready within five minutes.

*Believe it or not, there is a town called "Philadelphia" in Mississippi.

My first bite was heaven. I think everyone (sorry vegetarians) can relate to a really good, authentic steak and cheese sub. The bread was fresh, the peppers and mushrooms grilled to perfection, the cheese melted, the shredded steak tender and lean. You really couldn't ask for much more from a Philly cheese steak sub. To top it off, my homemade brownie for dessert was also incredibly delicious. The food was great… Philly Billy definitely came through in the clutch.
We exited Moochie's and I was half expecting to walk out onto the vibrant streets of Philadelphia. I was making plans in my head to stop at an omnipresent WaWa to grab a Gatorade for the hotel room and to make sure I knew where local folk legend Kenn Kweder was performing for after the game. But as we stepped down to the sidewalk, I was slapped in the face with a 19-degree breeze and the mountains dominating the skyline could only mean one thing. We were back in Salt Lake City. There would be no WaWa and no Kenn Kweder, only a pack of Rolaids with my pre-game meal. And last but not least: Boys to Men sang "Down on Bended Knee" as Philly Billy transformed back to Bill Schoening.

I notice Manu is on the phone out front. I ask him if he can take a picture of me in front of the entrance. He obliges, takes the picture, and I enter to get in line. While waiting, some guy comes up to me and says, clearly unaware that I play for the San Antonio Spurs: "Do you realize who just took that picture for you? That was Manu Ginobili! He plays in the NBA! You must feel really stupid for getting him to take a picture and you didn't even have him get in it with you." He left. Probably to go harass Manu.

Tell him to go to Canter's next time he's in LA. Their pastrami is incredible, as is their lox with a big ass avocado on top.

I walked into a convenience store to buy a pack of peanut M&Ms. The night before I got hungry and ate a pack of them from the mini bar in my room. Rather than pay the exorbitant $5 fee the hotel charges, I usually just go and buy whatever minibar snacks I ate from a convenience store and replace them before anyone notices, thus avoiding the hotel's attempt at price gouging.

Matt Bonner and the Spurs should host a contest where people win the chance to come in and use provided ingredients to make a sandwich for Matt.

Matt could pick a winner and the winner could get Spurs tickets or something.
