Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge told the Boston Globe that forward Glen Davis "looks like he's going to be out for a while" with a hand injury, which was reportedly suffered in an off-the-court altercation.
According to a report in the Boston Herald, which cited unnamed sources, the injury was to Davis' right thumb and occurred in an altercation with a friend. Davis was reportedly defending himself against a former teammate who was visiting from Louisiana.
When asked by the Globe about the circumstances of the injury, Ainge said he "would not confirm or deny" that it occurred in an altercation.
"I am not making a public statement until we have all of the facts relative to the injury," Ainge said. "We sent him for a scan and further tests."
The Herald reported that surgery could be required and Davis could be lost for a significant period of time.
Davis, who re-signed with the Celtics in the offseason, is heading into his third season in Boston. He averaged 7 points and 4 rebounds per game off the bench last season, but those totals spiked to 15.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game in the playoffs, when he was a starter filling in for the injured Kevin Garnett.
Along with Rasheed Wallace and Marquis Daniels, he is expected to play a key bench role for the Celtics this season.
The Celtics open their season Tuesday night in Cleveland.

Big Baby suffers injury in altercation (http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/basketball/celtics/view.bg?articleid=1207469&srvc=sports&position=0)
By Steve Bulpett
Boston Herald Sports Reporter
Celtics forward Glen Davis has suffered a right thumb injury and could be lost to the team for a significant period of time.
Davis underwent X-rays today and will have to get further tests to determine the full extent of the damage. Surgery could be required.
According to sources, this was a non-basketball injury. The injury occurred Sunday night between Davis and a former teammate who had flown up from Louisiana. Sources said the Celtic was defending himself at the time.
Obviously, the injury does not come at a good time for the Celtics, who open their 2009-10 NBA season tomorrow night in Cleveland. Celtics coach Doc Rivers said after today’s practice that he was unaware of the circumstances, but sources said the club has been fully apprised of the situation.
As expected, the Celts are not pleased. Davis is said to be extremely upset, too

I don't see where the nightclub is listed as a 'gay' nightclub (was that a joke Shank, or do you have another source?). Also, on the front web page of the Herald, it says the sequel to Boondock Saints comes out on Friday. Is that nationwide or just in Boston?

'Big Baby' likely to be suspended (http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nba/news/story?id=4598533)
ESPN.com news services
Glen Davis "very likely" will be suspended by the Boston Celtics for his reported involvement in an altercation in which the forward suffered a broken thumb.
Celtics co-owner Wyc Grousbeck told Boston TV station WFXT that team officials would have a discussion with Davis at some point Tuesday. The Celtics open their season tonight in Cleveland.
Davis and a former LSU teammate were involved in a scrap on Sunday, the Boston Globe reported. The newspaper did not provide details. Davis will need surgery to repair his thumb.
"We'll deal with it," Grousbeck told WFXT. "I'm not going to call him 'Big Baby' anymore. He's Glen. He needs to act like Glen. We'll decide what to do once I talk to him, once we talk to him today."

Celtics’ Davis expects to be sidelined 6-8 weeks (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=mc-davisceltics102709&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)
By Marc J. Spears
Boston Celtics forward Glen Davis told Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that he will be sidelined six to eight weeks after breaking his right thumb while trying to protect himself from a friend who slugged him.
Davis said the incident happened early Sunday morning when Davis’ girlfriend, Jenna Gomez, one of her girlfriends and one of his high school friends were returning to his West Boston home after celebrating Gomez’s birthday. Davis said he and his high school friend got into a heated debate over some “personal issues,” and the friend, who was driving their vehicle, threw a punch at Davis. Davis retaliated by throwing a punch back that broke his hand.
Davis underwent surgery on Tuesday to repair the thumb at a Boston suburban hospital.
“I was defending myself,” Davis said in a phone interview with Yahoo! Sports. “I wasn’t just fighting. I feel like I let my team down by breaking my hand. I let my team down trying to defend myself. I have to make better decisions on how I choose my friends.”
Davis was adamant that nobody in the car was inebriated at the time of the incident, but he declined to divulge his friend’s name. Davis said the fight didn’t escalate further after the group pulled over to the side of the road. Davis’ friend flew back from Boston to Louisiana later Sunday.
The Celtics open the season Tuesday night in Cleveland. Davis plans to be at the Celtics’ practice facility in Waltham, Mass., on Wednesday and will apologize to his teammates for the incident. Teammates Eddie House, Rasheed Wallace, Tony Allen and J.R. Giddens have all sent text messages to check on him.
The Celtics re-signed Davis this summer to a two-year contract worth $6.3 million. The Boston Globe reported that owner Wyc Grousbeck is considering suspending Davis for his actions.
“Wyk has been on the warpath for two days over this,” a league source told Yahoo! Sports. “They want to get money back from him.”
The team has been hurting financially, the source said, and Grousbeck sees this as an opportunity to recoup some of Davis’ salary.
“I don’t want to comment on that,” Davis said. “I haven’t spoken to them about that.”

Celtics owner: 'I've had enough of Big Baby'
http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/10280216/Celtics-owner:-'I've-had-enough-of-Big-Baby'
The Celtics certainly didn't need this distraction as they prepare for Tuesday's season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Glen "Big Baby" Davis, who broke his thumb in an altercation with a former college teammate, according to multiple reports, will likely be suspended by the team, owner Wyc Grousbeck told the Boston Globe Tuesday morning.
"I've had enough of 'Big Baby,' so I'm going to start calling him Glen," Grousbeck told the Globe. "It certainly seems like there's going to be a suspension here."
Davis could miss up to two months as a result of the thumb injury. He had surgery on it on Tuesday.
Davis was not in Cleveland for Tuesday night's opener, Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said. The team confirmed Davis was injured, and on Monday coach Doc Rivers said Davis had gone to the hospital for X-rays.
"We are talking with his representatives and will likely move to suspend him for a period of time once we have all the facts in front of us," Grousbeck said. "His contract prohibits certain off-court activities."
Davis was an important part of the team last spring, moving into the starting lineup after Kevin Garnett was injured. He went from 21 minutes a game to 36 while bumping his scoring average from 7 points to 15.8 a game.
Davis re-signed with Boston during the offseason on a two-year, $5 million deal. He could also earn an additional $1 million if he meets incentives based on his weight, the paper reported.

So I'm assuming his friend was making fun of him for being fat and never meeting the requirement for that extra $1 mil.

Celtics decide not to suspend Davis (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ap-celtics-davis&prov=ap&type=lgns)
The Boston Celtics have decided not to suspend forward Glen “Big Baby” Davis after an early morning fight with a childhood friend the day before the season opener left him sidelined for at least five weeks with a broken right thumb.
Executive vice president Danny Ainge made the announcement with Davis seated next to him in a press conference Friday before the Celtics’ game against the Chicago Bulls, saying the club wanted to keep him around to work out with the team.
In his first meeting with the media since the incident, Davis said he apologized to his teammates and had a lot of growing up to do.
Davis had surgery on the thumb Tuesday morning, hours before his teammates opened their season with a victory in Cleveland.

I wonder if Davis wrapped his fingers around his thumb to make a fist; you can break your thumb that way, if you're an idiot.
