FINALLY!!!!!! A REAL NBA GAME @ Full speed!

How will Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace stack up vs SHAQ?

Shaq looked good in the preseason... looks like he lost a few pounds.

Celtics are still embarrassed about not making the ECF last year while the Cavs are still figuring out what to do with El Mariachi.

Cavs are in for a beatdown of mythic proportions.

Let the games begin!

This should be a good game, I think. Both teams are going to try to stick it to each other and get a one game lead in their head-to-head match-up. Will the Cavs get their first home loss in their first game of the season? Or, will father time start to show his sway over the Celtics and the Cavs, in earnest, begin their march back to the ECFs? Let's get this shit started already!!!

Awesome, Thunder Dan...the Q seems like a fun place to play. I had an opportunity to catch the Lakers' home opener tonight, but since I was called into work--I'm going to miss out. Goodluck to your Cavs.

By Brett Huston

There are plenty of uncertainties surrounding the future of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics as they’re currently constructed, and after discouraging playoff exits for both teams, the pressure to win now has only increased.

Shaquille O’Neal and Rasheed Wallace have some experience doing just that.

The veteran big men may eventually make a difference for their new teams in the postseason, but the spotlight will still be on reigning MVP - and potential free agent - LeBron James and Boston’s Big Three in the NBA’s season opener Tuesday night as the Cavaliers seek a 12th straight home win over the Celtics.

Cleveland (66-16) and Boston (62-20) were the top two seeds in the Eastern Conference last season, and considering they had represented the East in the past two NBA finals, but both teams were ousted by the Orlando Magic. The Celtics fell in seven games in the conference semifinals before the Cavaliers were eliminated in six in the East finals.

Those postseason failures sparked Cleveland general manager Danny Ferry and Boston counterpart Danny Ainge to tinker with their respective rosters, but that wasn’t all on the minds of the two Eastern powers. James can opt out of his contract following this season, and Ray Allen can do likewise with the Celtics, leaving the possibility Boston may rebuild around point guard Rajon Rondo considering the mileage on veterans Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce.

The Cavaliers signed free agent swingmen Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon while Boston added similar versatility in Marquis Daniels. The biggest changes, though, came at center—Cleveland jettisoned Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic to Phoenix for three-time finals MVP O’Neal, while the Celtics signed Wallace, a four-time All-Star who’s been on a playoff team for 13 consecutive seasons.

“I’ve heard, ‘Is Shaq good for their team?’ Like, how could he not be?” Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. “I’ll take him. He gives them size, he gives them another post player, he gives them a great passer. He gives them a rebounder. He’s one of the most intimidating forces in the league.”

While the burly O’Neal will partner with the solid shooting of backup center Zydrunas Ilgauskas to give Cavaliers coach Mike Brown two very different big men, Boston should have the same luxury on the interior. Center Kendrick Perkins is a consistent scorer in the low post, while Wallace, who’s attempted 4.6 3-pointers a game over the past four seasons, provides a threat on the perimeter.

“He’ll spread the floor offensively, something we’ve never had,” Rivers said. “Heck, most people don’t have a (center) sitting behind the 3-point line. Defensively, he’s been terrific. He’s also going to give us some post play on the offensive end.”

The other thing Wallace adds is a hot temper, having been whistled for 291 technical fouls since entering the league in 1995.

O’Neal has 117 himself since Wallace debuted, and many feel his dynamic personality won’t mesh with James’.

“People look too far into individuals than the team aspect of things,” James said. “They think two stars can’t coexist. But it’s not just about me and Shaq, it’s about the whole team. Me and Shaq can’t do it by ourselves. We need everybody on the floor to work hard every day to make this thing happen.”

While All-Star point guard Mo Williams gives James a secondary scorer, Cavaliers guard and former Celtic Delonte West didn’t play during the preseason after being arrested last month for carrying three loaded guns while riding a motorcycle. In addition, his wife reportedly filed a domestic violence report over the weekend, adding further doubt to his already murky playing status.

Wallace likely will join Daniels on Boston’s second unit along with Eddie House, Glen Davis and Shelden Williams. Wallace, Davis and Williams should provide excellent depth in case Garnett’s surgically repaired right knee - which caused him to miss 25 games last season - hampers him.

Garnett, the 2007-08 defensive player of the year, Pierce and the Celtics have held James to 40.0 percent shooting in 14 combined regular-season and playoff games the past two seasons, but James has averaged 30.3 points on 45.1 percent shooting in his past seven games against the Celtics at Quicken Loans Arena, while Pierce has been held to 14.7 points while shooting 34.3 percent.

The Cavaliers have won 11 straight at home over Boston by an average of 12.8 points, with their last loss coming in overtime on Dec. 18, 2004. Overall, the home team has won 16 consecutive games in the series.

Cavs list West as doubtful (http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=txcavalierswest&prov=st&type=lgns)
By Tom Withers

Troubled Cavaliers guard Delonte West is doubtful for the season opener against the Boston Celtics.

Cleveland coach Mike Brown said after the team’s shootaround that West would likely be inactive for Tuesday night’s game.

West has battled bipolar disorder in the past and has had a turbulent off-season. He was arrested on weapons charges near his Maryland home in September. He reported to training camp on time, but did not show for the first four practices and then left the Cavaliers for a week to deal with personal issues.

On Monday, West’s wife filed a domestic violence report against him.

I manned up and bought season tickets. It's probably the kiss of death because everytime I go they lose. I went to 2 home games last year, the Lakers and the 76ers- they lost them both. Sold all my playoff tickets up until the Magic series, and they lost a couple of those games. At one point I was 0-3 at Cavs games in 2009 for a team that was 39-2 a home during the regular season

He does. I figured he'd learn from how healthy he stayed last year when he came into camp in good shape strengthening weak muscle groups all off season, so much for that. Look for a 4-6 week injury early on.

After the initial run there, Cavs look mostly overmatched. Lebron looks like a freak, but it's still the same old Cavs. Unless Shaq can prove that he's not a shell of his former self (which I think he is), then I don't think this Cavs team is much better.

When you have nothing but James sneakin' 3 pointers when nobody is looking, or, suicide dives to the rim yer shit is really weak.

Varejao is the killer. Anthony Parker and Jamario Moon, not so much. To be frank, they could not sign the rest of the players.

Nah, if you're going to sign one of them you might as well get all three, since any one of those signings would ensure they wouldn't have the max slot to offer someone next to James.

Pierce closed the game pretty well. They should be ranked at the top of the east I think.

Ugly win but I will take it. It was nice to see Pierce take over at the end. I am shocked we managed to win a game at the Q. It wouldn't shock me to see the Cavs take one in Boston next time they meet. Cavs pick and roll d is going to suffer as teams will be picking it apart all season long.

Man, if we could get our ass scratchers somehow/someway on Rondo I do believe I'd eat my salty essence. He'd be the absolutely perfect compliment to Kobe, Gasol & Odom.

So Rondo for Fisher? NOT

Culburn369

NOT is correct. Though maybe if he stays there 'till he's unrestricted and they/Ainge continues to denigrate & piss him off. Morrison is coming off after this season. There's 6 million to start with. Trade Vug for bupkis, there's 6 more.

I know.

Ainge though has never known when to stfu. & he's on direct orders from the front end to dumb Rondo down, okey doke him. Hey, I'm not the only one dreaming. So is Ainge. He'll pay him, or, maybe we will.

Fair enough but I assume there is a chance of him signing elsewhere, perhaps NYC??

he is able to run the point with the 2nd string, much better than what Daniel Gibson does. Ray Allen had fun with Gibson on him last night for 30 minutes.

Sometimes I wonder if Laker fans know anything about basketball...you really think West playing last night wouldn't have made any difference?

Delonte West was the only player other than Lebron who showed up for the playoffs last year on that team.

I said it the whole off season and I'll say it again, they don't have the proper compliment to Shaq at PF. Anderson Varejao and Shaq as your front court is gonna make it too easy for players like KG to sag off and worry about help defense.

I think that is why they were playing Z at 4 last night during stretches.

I don't think Brown knows what rotations he is going with because the preseason was wasted with flu, injuries and guns in suitcases. They will get it worked out sometime, but will probably lose some games out of the gate trying to figure it out

Having Z at 4 it's a huge liability on defense; Moon, and Varejao don't provide enough at PF. They have to get a capable PF with starter's quality.

I think they are going to toy around with lineups and if they can't find anything they will trade Z's $20,000,000 contract for something at the deadline. I think after last year, they don't give a shit about the regular season

I agree TD, West's ability to run the 2nd team is quite valuable--but I think his impact on THIS GAME would've been marginal. Save for the opening minutes of the game, the Cavs 1st AND 2nd team offense looked stagnant all night. Yes, they will get better once they get a few live games under their belt. West's impact would've been limited because the Celtics were posting up the Cavs smaller guards all night. Hell, how many times did we see Ray Allen on the block posting up his defender? He would've exploited Delonte's size as well IMO. Delonte is an important cog in their offense TD, but like I've said I don't think his presence would've put them over the top last night.

how can you say that? The Celtics closed that 14 point lead with Ray Allen running the second unit with Boobie Gibson running the Cavs second unit. That's a huge advantage. If West plays last night, he is guarding Ray Allen and Ray doesn't score 20 points or whatever he had in the 2nd quarter. The Cavs only lost by 7, and were down 4 when Parker turned it over (3 in the 4th quarter)...so to say West wouldn't have an impact is crazy. West is better than Parker, wouldn't have the 3 turn overs, and better than Boobie at running the offense and playing defense on Ray Allen (who he has shut down years prior)
