View Full Version : Another Pink Slip

Just happened over the phone.

You all know I work for ACORN Housing. And yes they're in a world of mess.

The position I hold is a full-time temporary grant funded position, but was temporary as long as we continued to have the grant (which was in the bag as far as ACORN Housing could tell for years to come...well until...). I was assured once all this went down that they would find something for me to do (that was early September). Well, yeah, so that's not too true.

My last day is Friday.

I have interviews for two positions at other local non-profits this coming week and am waiting to hear if I will be moving forward in the Teach For America process later this week. So, it wasn't like I didn't see this coming. But, if you all could please send some good vibes and prayers my way so this lay-off could be non-existent that would be absolutely fabulous. And I promise not to be a whiny baby about my job hunt like I was last time.

Thanks!

I haven't read that thread yet.

The Teach For America thing is a staff position, so it wouldn't be teaching (it's so hard to get in to..I know I wouldn't make it!). So...we'll see. Fingers crossed.

With a wonky eye and dirty feet I doubt if they would take me. :p:

But seriously, isn't there a monstrous test you have to take? And then a series of like 200 interviews to get in? I can hardly solve a Wheel of Fortune puzzle without racking my brain...and you want me to join the FBI?

Shame how companies expect nothing but stand up honesty from their employees yet they lie and deceive them if it's beneficial for the company to do so.

"your job is safe... We'll keep you as an asset to this company" really means "stay just a while longer cause we need you for a week/month to finish some things before we toss you out".

It's a process, but I know some guys who got in that worked with me. You're biggest problem might be the physical parts of it. But some of those guys I know that got in are idiots. You are 100x's smarter than they are. They are smarter than me because they had the smarts to go to college first though. :rolleyes

my cousin does teach for America in the Bronx, she likes it. She doesn't know what the hell she is going to do when her contract expires or whatever they do, but she likes it for the time being. TFA sounds like a cool gig if you can get in

That's the thing with all the Corps, service things that 17-24 year olds are doing now (and I've done one too...Summer of '07). What do you do next? Do you do just teach? Do you go in to ministry (mine was for the church)...do you do this....that...go and look for another job.... go back with the degree you graduated with?

They try hard to get you up with a network so you're set when your contract runs out...but there are so many members that it is hard to get "in" within the organizations that you network with.

With TFA I interviewed with a girl who taught in the Bronx for two years with TFA and then stayed for two years and then moved over to a staff position (I interviewed for a staff position...)..she sounded like a cool chick. The position said "flexible/NYC" so I asked and she said they wanted me to perhaps move to the City...I was like "umm...maybe?"

And PS...where's your hook up? Chris Duhan's girlfriend?

The Repugs and their rabid mob are clearly to blame for Ashbeigh's job loss.

Acorn's "faults" were:

1. registering 1 million+ low income voters, who mostly vote (if they vote) as Dems.

2. fighting banks and private lenders for their predatory lending practices.

3. fighting for better wages and job conditions for low-wage employees.

All of these pissed off the Repugs and conservatives.

The Repugs and conservatives are more interested in hard-ass partisan politics and disenfranchising citizens than in respecting the Constitution and having any semblance of ethics, fair play, or good will.

Let's see. Crookshanks lends her full-on ass ignorant support to a vicious, nihilistic, morally bereft and often violent political movement. This political movement conspiratorially destroyed ACORN because ACORN had the audacity to provide services for poor and black people. This was also motivated by vehement, race based hatred for our sitting president.

So in effect, crookshanks indirectly cost ashbeeigh her job, then came in here and told ashbeeigh she was better off for it. And really, I'm not even offended on ashbeeigh's behalf- she should be, but I'm more offended on behalf of decency, morality and what was once a great country.

The only difference between what I told crookshanks in a PM and what she said to ashbeeigh in this thread is that I actually some shit outright, while she was subversive, cowardly bitch about it. (And y'know, another difference? My politics didn't cost crookshanks her job. Unfortunately she can't say the same about herself and ashbeeigh)

My only regret in sending that pm is that I was too pissed off to use an apostrophe- well that and the fact that crookshanks is too fucking moronic and subversive to know that the p in pm stands for private.

So yeah, you fucking bitch, I'd like to re-iterate publicly: starve.

This is not a thread for you and I to argue - but let's set the record straight you ignorant pothead. I DID NOT get fired - the company is closing and moving our jobs to Denver. And I had NOTHING to do with Ash losing her job - that was the fault of the idiots at ACORN who were caught on tape. I'm sorry Ash lost her job, especially in this economy. However, with all the scandal associated right now with ACORN, I said I thought she'd be better off in the long run by not being associated with them. BIG DIFFERENCE - but one you're obviously too stupid to see. I never said I was glad she got fired. Also, there was another poster who agreed with me - did you send them a PM also? And no - you don't get to hide your vile hatred of me behind a PM. Now just shut up and go away and leave this thread for those who have something nice to say.

I believe in the things ACORN and ACORN Housing is and will continue to do. I won't turn my back on the organization. I'm not a hateful person, even if I say a few hateful things there and there here...I feel sorry about them a few days later.

There are bad apples, and probably more bad than good...but the roots of both organizations are good ones. And that's what I choose to believe. And everyone is entitled to their own opinions. And that's fine. And it probably is a good thing that I'm leaving sooner than later. I just wish I was the one to decide to leave instead of the other way around.

Now, continue on with your PM battles.

I need to step my game up. I have yet to ask for any boob shots through PM. Don't worry ladies I am looking to fill your boxes very soon ;)

Ohhhh and here I've been asking in the Quattro, I needed to send a PM huh?

I didn't say PMs got better results, did I??

YOU LIE!

I may not be a fan of ACORN - but Ash believed in what she was doing and I'm sorry she's not going to be able to continue there. There is a legitimate need for the work Ash was doing and I hope she's able to find something comparable in another organization that isn't under fire for corruption.

Now you're just being deliberately obtuse. Neither of us "got fired". Both our jobs ended - hers because of grant money, and mine because the company is closing the Ft. Worth office. But if it makes you feel like a big man - go for it. :rolleyes

Wow - really? That's a huge surprise for the 150+ people who've already received their severance packages and the HR people who are trying to figure out how to conduct 100+ exit interviews all in the same day. :rollin

So can I sue them for lying to me - and putting it in writing? :p:

Would that be Boutons-une, or Boutons-deux? I don't believe there is a Boutons-trois.

Geez. Now I can see why people get so upset here.

You were just saying, oh btw, my son did TFA and it was a good program. I never said anything other then "I had an interview with them." And now this has been turned in to "My son is better than ashbeeigh" thing..just like CrookShank's was "glad I was fired because i worked for ACORN."

I wasn't too stoked about TFA anyway. I asked how many applicants they had for the particular position i interviewed for and she said there were 200. It was iffy if I got a second interview. Whatever. On to the next one...where I can stay in San Antonio.

Thanks!

Next time your pink slips, let me know!
