Whats with the huge holes on defense?

The celtics are getting penetration and layups everytime.

Is boston just insanely good?

Thank you for the hard foul on kg shaq.

Shaq is really weak on the pick and roll defensively. It will be exploited all the time. Same problem that Cleveland had last season.

He can't move. He hasn't been able to move since the third of the 3-peat.

pick & roll is what Celtices good at, Sheed can sets screen and pops outside for 3, Pierce and Ray Allen can shoot/penetrate off the screen, that would always make Shaq in trouble defensively.

Don't forget Big Baby's moving screens!

If he was out there (and the refs were letting him get away with it as usual), it would've been a bigger win.

yup. as great as Shaq still is in some ways, he's physically unable at this point in his career to effectively defend the pick and roll. teams that can run it can beat a Shaq team.

Boston is insanely good. Once Sheed and Daniels learn the system inside out, they could be more scary.

Yeah, I enjoyed that hard foul from Shaq on KG.

But I think Shaqs pick and roll D is gonna be the demise of Cleveland this year.

Shaq has ALWAYS been weak on pick-n-roll defense. When he was younger and quicker, he was simply lazy. Now he's both lazy and slow. It's only gotten worse as he's gotten older. This is a known fact that no one really acknowledges. The Cavs WILL be considerably weaker on defense this season.

That and transition defense ... ESPECIALLY if they play Z and Shaq together ...

the problem is Z. if the cavs can get a legit pf they can beat the celtics

The problem is the lack of athleticism and spacing at PF to compliment Shaq.....if JJ Hickson can come in and help it'd be huge.

Shaq needs to step up, the cavs looked like the same one trick pony, granted a very talented pony.

He's always on his heels & winded. He reaches constantly, more of a flat footed lunge at any activity close to him. You get whatever you want against Daddy. He's the perfect patsy and since there is a gag order in effect, he pretends to be as oblivious as need be.

Stupid Miami/loyal refs. Stupid Phoenix. Stupid Cleveland.

QFT. If you take the ball to Shaq, he can be a credible deterrent at the rim and he can generally hang if asked to defend small areas like the low block. If you can move Shaq at all -- pick and roll; Garnett's high-block move in the 4th; attacks on the rim after drives and ball reversals -- he's a complete non-factor.

And none of that is new stuff.

I thought he defended KG well for that little stretch with KG hitting that tough shot and then forced him int he air as James stole the pass but he has the turning circle of a mack truck.

Nice thread by all, spot on stuff. :tu

On a tangent, can someone get Mike Brown an offense?

Or, get him a change in skin pigment. So they can fire his white ass.

nah, Brown can just find another token coach to run the offense.

What's with having Z and Shaq on the floor at the same time for such a long stretch? Cavs where lucky the C's didn't take much advantage of their SLOW transition defense at the time

Yep, he has to take that hop just to start running. He's worthless on D and not that effective on offense.

This is why I said the Suns would be better off just cutting him.

And if West was playing, it wouldn't have been a win at all. I won't even mention the Cavs having 2 new starters with 0 game experience together.

Eh, West is good, but he's no savior.

Celts were without Big Baby. I bet if the Celts had lost, you wouldn't of let that injury fly. However since it is the Cavs and they lost, the West injury can be used as an excuse to why they lost..Cavs still had their "all-star" pg, the center they got for nothing, and Lebron out there. They also had Varajeo (who you claim is a better pick and roll defender than KG). Celts are also "old as dirt" so they had no business winning that game with or without West.
