After all the crappy moves they made in the offseason a lot of people were talking about them as an elite team and they're nothing more than a 7th or 8th seed on the west.

Lakers, Spurs, Jazz, Blazers, Hornets, Nuggetts are all better teams than Dallas.

The mavs are missing a key component (Josh Howard), Jason Kidd needs probably 1/4 of a season to get the kinks worked out of his body, Gilbert Arenas had his best game of the year, and they have some new players (Marion/Gooden) to work into their offense.

I think its a little premature to say they are "mediocre"

whats hilarious is spurfans grouping the spurs in the same category as teams like the celtics, lakers, and magic, and ahead of the Mavs, despite the fact that the Mavs dominated them last year in the playoffs. each team added a very good player (jefferson and marion), and a good role player (mcdyess and gooden).

if the mavs cant get mentioned with elite, then the spurs shouldnt be either

figures though. these are spurfans we are debating with. 3rd most illogical fanbase in the nba (only behind rockets and suns fans)

And they're counting on guys that are fragile as China (Manu) and other guys that have more than once recently not made it to April at 100% (Timmy). A big part of grouping them in with the elite is their recent championship past.

The Spurs are getting the benefit of the doubt 'cause they got the third seed last season with a much less talented team than this year. Then they lost to the Mavs but that has more to do with Manu and Tim's injuries and matchup problems.

The Mavs are the ones getting unjustified benefit of the doubt, they're getting elite status from a lot of people and they are IMO clearly a first round playoffs team.

99% of the people would agree that Lakers, Nuggetts and Spurs are better than Dallas, most of the them would also agree that the Blazers are better too (with that alone you already have the first 4 seeds) and I think that the Jazz and Hornets are also better teams than the Mavs, that's why IMO the Mavericks are a mediocre team (which doesn't mean bad, it means average or middle of the pack).

Findog

Yep, it's Mike Tyson (Lakers) and then a bunch of middleweight challengers (2-8 seeds). There's a substantial drop-off between 1 and 2 (whoever that is), but not much drop-off between 2-8.
