SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs announced today that they have picked up the option for the 2010-11 season for guard George Hill.

In his rookie season Hill appeared in 77 games, averaging 5.7 points, 2.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 16.5 minutes. As a starter he averaged 9.7 points, 3.4 assists and 3.3 rebounds in 27.9 minutes in seven games while filling in for the injured Tony Parker. During that stretch Hill posted his four highest scoring games of the season: scored 20 points in 29:28 minutes on 11/19 vs. Denver, had a career-high 23 points in 22:37 minutes on 11/21 vs. Utah, tallied 20 points in 28:36 minutes on 11/24 at Memphis and had 19 points – along with a career-best 11 rebounds – in 32:40 minutes on 11/26 vs. Chicago.

An early entry candidate in the 2008 NBA Draft, Hill was selected by the Spurs in the first round with the 26th overall pick out of IUPUI. He is the first player school history to be selected in an NBA Draft and appear in an NBA game.

The only reason to wait is to see if they can trade him to another team. In that case the other team may want the option picked up. I don't see any scenario where they extend him to keep him. If they were going to do that, why not make the announcement together with the Hill announcement? Surely they don't need two regular season games to come to a conclusion.

Bye Ian

Why? Is there a limit on players they can extend?

I think they won't resign but continue to evaluate. They don't know enough about him to extend but he could still improve.

No, but there's really no reason not to announce both extensions together. The deadline is Saturday.

Ahh, you responded while I was editing. I think they won't resign him but will wait to evaluate more. It doesn't look good but he'll still be here this year. And his value will only go down with limited minutes so they could resign him cheaper, even if he shows enough for him to stick around.

What if they do?

Then I'd be wrong.

Wouldn't be the first time, won't be the last.

Given how low the option was and Hill's level is was an easy choice.

It looks more and more that Spurs are giving up on Ian. I still think he can turn into a good NBA player and I hope he will succeed with another team.

Nice. I think this is going to be a big season for George, now that Pop seems like he's ready to give him consistent minutes.

A Spurs no-brainer: Hill gets extension (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/10/a-spurs-no-brai.html)
By Mike Monroe

In what may have been the easiest decision the Spurs' basketball operations department has made this season, the club on Wednesday picked up its option for the 2010-11 season for guard George Hill.

After Hill's spectacular preseason -- he led the team in preseason scoring and played so well coach Gregg Popovich repeatedly referred to him as "my favorite player" -- it would have been a shock had the Spurs not picked up the option.

The third year of Hill's rookie-scale deal will pay him $1,157,160.

If he continues the progression of his game as he has from year one to year two, he will be a bargain at that price.

Mike Monroe is wrong (again).
Hill will earn $854,389 next year.

Even if they don't extend Ian, it might not necessarily mean they are giving up on him - they might just think it is worth taking a chance that they'll be able to re-sign him for less next summer. Given how he's played so far, that seems reasonable to me.

Lol reading into it to much.... Extending Hill was a no brainer, Ian no so much.

Definitely a no-brainer, still good to hear (or read).

If he show some good things this year, he will get a more than the $1.8M salary he should have had in 2010-2011. Teams will overpay for a young, promising and athletic bigman. For example, Amir Johnson get $11M/3 years after barely playing in the NBA.

If he sucks or doesn't play, Spurs won't be interested in re-signing him.

Awesome. If he continues to improve and mature this year he will definitely get a nice contract extension.

Good news is, that if Ian's option is picked up, that means the Spurs got S-Jax in a trade!

Just kidding.
