Is getting increasingly atrocious in here.
I understand that a message board isn't a text book and that the format's conversational nature should both encourage and tolerate a certain sense of freedom. Casual and relaxed phrasing, as well as idiomatic word choice, can be both clever and fun to read. I get that. Which is why I have specifically avoided being a cunty grammar nazi within specific threads.
But, Jesus people, I can't even keep track of how often I have recently had to read and re-read a part of someone's post in order to glean any semblance of coherent thought.
Commas. Commas would go a long way toward fixing this problem. Hell, I'd be happy with any form of punctuation, even if used incorrectly. As a rule of thumb, it is always helpful to read your post out loud -- there should be some form of punctuation inserted anywhere you pause in your reading. It is necessary to ensure that your post reads as an actual statement or question, rather than a random, unrelated collection of words thrown at the screen.

I agree with you wholeheartedly CF because punctuation is used way too much in this forum by people who have no idea when to throw in a period or comma or question mark and will continue to throw out big words like they know what they are talking about but pay no attention to whatsoever to their punctuation I mean how can they be on the computer and hold down jobs with out even using proper grammar I bet at work they have to have everything looked over before it goes out like this one lady I work with who simply cannot spell she always makes mistakes and I have no idea why they still let her do what she does because if I were the boss I would have let her go a long time ago but with the way the economy is maybe I would let her stay too because she is a single mother and needs to be able to feed her kids but I would at least bring it to her attention or something or have her sit with someone to see how they do things first maybe she will catch on and correct her mistakes but how often does that happen in life because for the most part once we are set in our ways that is it and we are blind to the way anyone else does anything because we automatically think we are right it goes with the whole old dog new tricks saying that old people like to say but when I get old I will be saying other things that younger people will think is weird like Fo shizzle and off the hook come to think of it it already sounds funny to me it's crazy how in a matter of years bling bling went from something cool to something old white people say to feel cool speaking of cool the weather is great outside and I hope it gets colder soon I wish I was outside instead of stuck here at work.

I think your experience is pretty common among women. If you're genuinely interested in the answers to some of those questions, I'm reading this book (http://www.amazon.com/Sexual-Fluidity-Understanding-Womens-Desire/dp/0674026241)in my Sexual Diversity class right now and it has a lot of interesting information about women's sexuality and its inherent fluidity. The author, a feminist psychologist, conducted a long term empirical study of a group of women showing that the rigid categories of sexuality (straight, gay, bi, asexual) don't really work for women -- women who identify as straight often have experiences with other women, women who identify as lesbian or queer may fuck guys, women who identify as bisexual may only ever date or sleep with one gender, and so on. The reasons for this are numerous, and are not exclusive to women (men are prone to fluidity as well, though to a lesser degree), but fluidity is far more common for us than certainty or rigidity.
I think that's part of it, but not necessarily because women have a broader idea of what is physically attractive. I think we are more likely than men to develop an attraction based on an emotional bond. Which is, of course, not to suggest that all women who engage in same-sex activities do so because of a deep emotional attachment (lord knows I haven't), but because it's not uncommon for women to development an attraction or a sexual relationship with someone other than what they're typically attracted to just because of an emotional connection. In my experience, a straight man can develop a very strong emotional bond with a male friend, but it is not as likely to develop into a sexual attraction or curiosity as it would in a situation with two women.
I think it also has a lot to do with what our society finds to be acceptable behavior -- women can recover from a little experimentation without a huge blow to their reputation, but men really can't.
Especially since it's always discussed in terms of a "versus." It's always oppositional. As if such a complex thing as one's sexuality could only be caused by genetics OR environment.
I can't think of any way they wouldn't both be involved. Genetics and biology may be involved in determining one's potential or predisposition towards same-sex attractions, but there are countless outside factors -- family, religion, culture, etc. -- that are involved in determining whether or not that potential will ever be expressed, or even recognized. I've always been happy enough with men that I often wonder how different my sexuality would be if I grew up in a more conservative environment than I did. Even amongst the straight members of my family, queerness is pretty damned common. If that hadn't been the case, if I didn't grow up open to the possibility, I'm not sure that I ever would have noticed my attraction to women. I don't know that I would have even recognized something was missing.
There's no one right way to be gay or bisexual by which everything is measured. Just as there's no one way to be straight.
I don't doubt the possibility that celebrities who express their fluidity may be doing so for publicity, but neither do I assume it.
There's a school of thought amongst feminist theoreticians that male homophobia is rooted in the hatred of the feminine. This doesn't mean the hatred of women, of course, but rather the devaluing of traditionally feminine characteristics. For a man to be intimate with another man, he is willingly adopting "feminine" characteristics, which is hugely threatening. This is why the quickest way to insult a man is to call him a pussy, or a bitch, or a fag, or to otherwise question his masculinity.
It is not just participating in this behavior that is socially questionable, though. Even the tolerance of male homosexuality can be a threat to one's masculinity, as part of the male performance is the explicit rejection of those feminine characteristics.
Liking/accepting two women together doesn't threaten one's masculinity. In fact, it reinforces it. Tolerating the idea of two men together, however, directly calls into question one's masculinity. Therefore, it is potentially far more damaging to be okay with the idea of two men having sex than it is to be okay with two women having sex
Is it just me, or does anyone else think most of this post was scanned off a textbook?:blah

Man, that song was wack. I agree with your point about the commas and all; punctuation is critical to showing the syntactic structure required to make a sentence grammatical (in the sense that it follows our universal grammar and is therefore understandable). As for some of the other complaints like your vs. you're and looser vs loser, I could care less; none of that pertains to grammar, so their meanings are almost always easily inferred from context.

People, A LOT is two words. Also, it's I couldn't care less.

I could/couldn't care less is an idiom, and both mean the same thing. Any natural language is filled with these kind of phrases that don't make sense when broken down to their constituents. One great example right off hand is caerse bien in Spanish, used to say you like someone (non-sexually). It doesn't make any sense in terms of its constituents though, because caer is the verb for to fall. A literal word-by-word translation of it would be something like he/she/you/them/etc falls well with me/you/him/her/them/etc.

I don't get bothered by by bad grammar or spelling except when it makes it impossible to understand what someone is trying to say.
Having said that, one of my grammar pet peeves is when people get "I" and "me" mixed up. One is objective. The other is subjective. I hate to hear/read "This dog came to live with my husband and I 3 years ago." Also people constantly use the word "their" as a singular word when it's plural.
CuckingFunt
10-30-2009, 06:25 PM
"I could care less" bothers me in certain contexts, just because it changes the meaning of the phrase.
Doesn't particularly bother me here, though. Nor does the your/you're or their/they're/there mixups. It bothers me when reading papers at school, for obvious reasons, but otherwise it falls into a category of something that I notice but don't necessarily mind.
None of the above has anything to do with why I started this thread, though, as those mistakes very seldom make a post completely unreadable. I started the thread after reading about five or six posts in a row in which the statements were assembled so poorly that I literally couldn't figure out what the hell the person was trying to say. Not even through context cues.
Just call out the moron with bad grammar.

Also people constantly use the word "their" as a singular word when it's plural.
THEIR
pronoun 1. a form of the possessive case of they (http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=they&db=luna) used as an attributive adjective, before a noun: their home; their rights as citizens; their departure for Rome. 2. (used after an indefinite singular antecedent in place of the definite masculine form his or the definite feminine form her): Someone left their book on the table. Did everyone bring their lunch?
Sentences such as "A child will cry if I hit them", "A person is entitled to their rights" and "Someone left their wallet here, they will probably return for it" are correct.
It also makes more sense than silly things like "He/She will be back for his/her things" or just referring to everyone as male or female, such as "A person carves out his destiny", "A sick cat may purr to comfort herself", and so forth.
Also, who cares about grammar. I've been trolling the internets since the 90s and can pretty much read anything as long as it is partially english. If one needs to exert so much brain power to put pauses in sentences when not indicated, then they fail at internet 101. If a second grade teacher can handle crappy grammar, then anyone here can.

I love grammar and vocabulary. But they are not pet peeves, I love them as an art. As far as this board goes, it doesn't bother me how people write. If this were a literary or technical/creative writing board I might feel differently. If I don't get the gist of someone's post, it's usually because of the way it was expressed and not the grammar/punctuation. Even the ones who post in wing-ding (sup, Marini) are decipherable. This is a casual place and I just imagine people are writing as if they we were all talking at a basketball game or a keg party. The people who post in perfect form I imagine being the pretentious "Frasier" and his brother types :)

I'm actually kinda surprised there's not a "grammar police" troll already.

Did you see the episode where Niles makes the half court basketball shot at the Sonics game?

Thanks a lot, Chippy!!
