Let's Get It Started
by Bill Schoening | October 30, 2009

It is noticeable everywhere you go in San Antonio. Fans are fired up about the start of a new basketball season. That hasn't always been the case.

Even with championship parades and hall of fame careers, some fans would rather just hit the fast forward button to the playoffs and see what happens. There's a different buzz this season, and there are several reasons.

First of all, it's been a long time since the Spurs have taken the floor. An early exit from the playoffs is not commonplace around here, so a long layoff has left fans anxious to see some quality hoops.

Secondly, when new players are brought in, thre's always a sense of anticipation. How will Richard Jefferson's overall game fit in with the Spurs' system? Will Antonio McDyess be able to help out Tim Duncan inside with scoring and rebounding? Can Theo Ratliff swat away shots the way he did earlier in the decade? Can rookie power forward DeJuan Blair continue to exhibit the promise he showed during a very productive preseason?

Of course, the answers to these questions won't be answered in the first week of the season. It is an 82-game grind and the Spurs are hoping that the newcomers can fit in with the returning players and jell together as the season wears on. Let the games begin!
