View Full Version : PETA goes after Manu!!!

I know there's about 10 threads on the front page about Manu, so if the mods want to combine this go ahead. But 48MoH just posted PETA's official response, and it is absolutely f-ing hysterical.

I mean, we all joked about PETA saying something, but did anyone really think they'd make a statement?

Via PETA.org:

To bludgeon a 4-ounce animal to death, it takes either a small man or a totally unthinking one—with no respect or consideration for lives humbler than his own. This is a time when athletes in particular need to be on their best behavior around any animal and show that they have brains and a heart, not just reactionary brawn.

Bats always try to avoid contact with humans, and there are plenty of easy ways to keep bats out of a basketball arena (or your home). We hope that the next time someone’s life is on the line, Manu Ginobili will take just a few seconds to think before he acts.

I submitted a comment, which I am confidently assuming will not be approved. But I did put my real email address so we'll see what kind of PETA-spiel I'll get.

First, it wasn't a "smack" it was a "love tap."

Second, I'm pretty sure the bat was flopping.

Third, it was delaying the game. If you were delaying my game, I'm pretty sure I'd love tap you too.

I don't remember them raising a stink when Bruce squashed a hornet a few years ago. What a bunch of hypocrites to accuse Manu of placing a bat beneath him when they clearly think that mammals are somehow superior to insect life. We all must share this planet PETA! We don't just get to pick and choose which lives are precious enough to protect! Just because something has more legs than fur doesn't make them worthless, you bastards!

Not that I agree with them. Short-sighted at times, the intention isn't malicious from Ginobili.

Had he have been able to do that without harm to the bat, then those PETA peeps would've bowed down on one knee and called him a hero.

I guess you got to say something to bring attention to your group, even at the expense of a man who just wanted to curtail a swooping bat.

The bat should have known better than to trespass in Texas. AT&T Center is the home of the Spurs, after all. :)

Serious answer:
While I did not wish the bat's death, I would rather see the bat perish than see of of the PEOPLE in the building suffer injury.
There were numerous children in the stands. What if the bat had flown into one of them instead of Manu?
The injuries to the children could have been serious.

All things considered, the scenario did not end that badly.

On behalf of everyone that didn't get bitten by the bat, I'd like to thank Manu for risking disease to clear a pest out of a public place. I'm unsure why there isn't more hate directed toward the person that chose to bring a bat to a basketball game on Halloween.

Your little link doesn't provide an escape route plan that's applicable to bat trapped in a crowded sports arena. So please, if you're going to post a link
Amanda, give us a relevant link.
How in the hell does the AT& T center provide the bat with the following:

In any encounter with a bat, stay calm and keep children and animals away.

Hey you're in an arena!!!! Not going to happen.

If the bat is indoors, he or she will probably try to find an opening, taking a U-shaped flight path that is higher near the walls and lower toward the middle of the room, so when you are in a room with a bat, try to stay near a wall.

Hello, it's an arena, and the walls are sloped and full of noise.

After closing interior doors, create an escape route by opening a window or door to the outside.

IT's AN ARENA, the doors are always open to the outside gathering areas but how can that bat find it when there are 18000 people yelling?

If the bat disappears before exiting, he or she may have landed on hanging clothes, behind curtains or upholstered furniture, or in a plant—anywhere where hanging is possible.

No plants or clothes or upholstered furniture there.

Try to catch the bat in a net.

Did that, bat had a chance to fly low into a net. He didn't co-operate.

Or cover him or her with a wide-mouthed jar or plastic tub and gently work a piece of cardboard between the container and the surface from which the bat is hanging.

Sorry, can't do that in a crowded arena.

SO again,Amanda, if you're going to give us a link and say this is how you handle a bat, give us one that works for the given situation. A bat in a house is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT than a bat in a crowded sports arena.

Say, if that bat had bit an innocent, what would you have said then?

If the animal did die, then it went quickly. PETA needs to pick it's fights better if it wants credibility. When those hicks hung a mama pig on a fork lift until dead (it taking 15 minutes or so), that is cruelty and it's time to step in. Manu swatting a bat dead instantly? If that bad had swooped at people in the stands it's possible someone could have gotten injured or even died trying to avoid it, and it's also possible the bat would have been dealt a very severe and grisly certain death had it encountered the wrong fan.

Manu probably saved someone's life and the bats as well(there is no body and no blood so it must be assumed the bat is only missing, not dead).

Manu risked his own safety to protect thousands of people from potentially getting bitten by the bat and PETA treats him like if he was a bad guy? Also, the bat could have been serisouly injured in that arena. Manu only stunned it. He should be treated like a hero.
And why those PETA people spend their time bashing Manu in a blog, because of a bat, while they could be saving animals out there?

I don't think our societies treat animals with the respect they deserve, but PETA are a bunch of fucking morons.

Also, Manu said he'd just stunned the bat because he could still feel it moving, and I take his word on that, why don't they? An open-hand slap of a bat would only stun it. They are tough little critters.

I once captured a mouse in my 2nd floor apartment and thought I had it well-contained in my hand, started to walk downstairs with it before it bit me and, totally by instinct, I lobbed it out the window. It fell two stories, bounced about a foot in the air, and when I got down there to check it out, it was just fine. In fact, I tried to recapture it and it evaded me.

Little critters are a lot tougher than you think, and there's no way Manu killed that bat... the guy he handed it to, who knows? I guess he's getting shots as well? :lol

First off, Manu does a lot of work around the community, including charities for PEOPLE!! Do you value the life of a bat over the life of a human? Sometimes I wonder about that. If a person attacks another person, you guys aren't up in arms..why does it need to be an animal for you to get all activist on us? Manu did not mean to kill the bat, and he did apologize for it. If a possibly disease infested rodent flies into my face, I'm swinging at it too..out of reaction. Insulting Manu is just childish...the guy did what every human being would do..react...and he did apologize. You people need to get a life.

I think it's stupid that Manu's action is "controversial" shows how lame some aspects of our society has gotten. :lol

It's stupid to see some comments that go out of the way to come off as "sensitive"towards the bat's well being. Why? It's just an animal. If you don't want to kill an animal fine, if you incidentally kill the animal without meaning to be needlessly cruel, then who the hell cares.

Manu shouldn't have to apologize for anything. It's inconsequential, you smash things that go into your home, and this is no different.
It's a fucking rodent with wings.

The whining from the PETA retards, and bat apologists over a tiny bat's life, reminds me of a scene in the movie PATTON, where the novice subordinate troops are held up because there's two mules stuck in the road holding up the jeeps and tank infantry and the troops are exposed to enemy fire because they're hitched to a cart blocking a narrow bridge. The troops are so ineffectual in getting the mules to budge, General Patton finally comes up to see what's the hold up, "Jackasses? You let a whole column get stalled and strafed on account of a couple of jackasses?
What the hell's the matter with you?" , pulls out his gun and shoots the two animals and commands the troops drag the carcasses out of the way, toss them over the cliff, and move on.
Problem solved. That should be everyone's philosophy.

. . .But it's not because in the 21st century, the Animals Rights people would cry foul at that cinematic scene, because some humans are as stupid as they please.
Some people spend too much time worrying about animals' well being over their own species'. :rolleyes

It bit me, as I said it was instinctual. I'm not proud of it, but it was funny.

And my comment about respecting animals was more about the industrialised meat industry, which reduces animals to meat machines. Free-ranging at least gives them some kind of life.

:lmao

this is real? i thought the news about PETA was some kinda joke from someone. Don't get me wrong, i totally respect their advocacy but throughout the years their beliefs had just become perverted and out of hand.

They are freakin' annoying, violent and distasteful! Bludgeon a 4-ounce animal my crap! Manu just stunned the bat, exaggerated morons! The bat was delaying the game, they should be happy Manu swatted it with his soft hand rather than it be hit by the ball or something.

I'd say, PETA should also be sensitive, their killing humans with their stupid comments.

I understand trying to advocate for animals and wanting to save them but PETA is way to extreme with their views and especially what happened in this case (by the way the bat didn't even die like they said). They're more concerned about the safety of the bat then they would be with Manu or any other person there. Say what they want to say about how bats are so harmless and all this stuff but what if the bat did go bite someone and had rabies? It shouldn't of been there in the first place. By the way they should know that Manu loves animals:). These were on his other facebook page .

It was bound to happen (http://blogs.mysanantonio.com/weblogs/courtside/2009/11/it-was-bound-to.html)
By Jeff McDonald

PETA is not happy with Manu Ginobili. Not surprising, considering the group also once protested President Obama swatting a fly.

http://blog.peta.org/archives/2009/11/manu_ginobili.php

Three points we'd make on Ginobili's behalf:

1) The bat wasn't going to leave the arena on its own. Somebody had to do something.

2) In the immediate aftermath of what PETA calls "the bludgeoning," Ginobili seemed generally concerned about the bat's well-being. He didn't mean to kill it (and now it appears he didn't).

3) Judging by the needle marks in Ginobili's body today, with more to come, it would appear the bat got the last laugh.

I am a big animal rights supporter, and was a little sad that the bat died. (If indeed it did, we're getting conflicting reports now.)

But no matter your stance on the issue, Peta needs to pick its battles better. The Manu incident and the Obama fly incident just make them look unreasonable and extremist. I do want someone looking out for animals, and wish to support groups like this, and they undermine themselves when they are petty. This was hardly clubbing baby seals...

Oh PETA... they continuously try to compare human lives to those of animals. I'm all against cruelty to animals; but let's put this in perspective. Bats are disease carrying mammals and this one was trapped in an arena. Several methods were used to get said bat out of the arena (none worked). So if a flying rat that may have rabies is flying towards your baby do you...

a) Try and reason with it
b) Sing a "happy" song to it hoping it will calm down
c) Let him bite your baby because we are all God's creatures
d) Check him for rabies before he bites and then buy him lunch

Times like these, show how out of touch PETA is with normal human logic. Can't have much respect for an organization that puts half naked people on street corners to try and get attention. Go home PETA and eat some tofu turkey... Now I'm leaving to enjoy my stay at the top of the food chain with some Rudy's BBQ and that does NOT make me a bad person.

With that being said, I didn't find the Manu incident funny, especially not as funny as so many people found it..I didn't see the big deal though..the bat could have had rabies, it could have potentially hurt some people in the arena, and the people involved tried different ways to capture it..
