Nov 5, 2009 - Despite the Lakers' close, overtime victory last night in what our Sean Keeley hilariously dubbed "Ariza Bowl I," the victory did not come without casualties. And you know, I knew something was missing from this NBA season. I just knew it.

The Clippers are terrible, Vince Carter's already got a gimpy ankle, Steve Nash is still the weirdly hot older chick, dominating younger blondes like Dwyane Wade... But something just didn't feel right. From the L.A. Times:

Andrew Bynum was injured toward the end of the Lakers' 103-102 overtime victory Wednesday over the Houston Rockets.

Bynum was fouled hard across his right arm while going up for a shot and sustained a sprained elbow with 24.7 seconds left in overtime. He will be re-evaluated today in Los Angeles.

"I can't even lift my arm right now," Bynum said. "They just took a shot at me. That's that, I guess. It's not that bad. It just takes a little while to heal up."

Ah, yes. Our annual "Andrew Bynum is injured...But this was supposed to be his breakout year!" story. For now, they're calling it a sprained elbow and Bynum is day-to-day, but given the history, here, you never know how this might turn out. The injury comes on the heels of--sarcasm aside--another stellar outing from Bynum (17 points, 17 rebounds), the promising Lakers big man that's been too banged up to fully blossom so far in his career. More from the Times:

Bynum definitely looked hurt after getting fouled by Chuck Hayes while going up for a layup attempt with 24.7 seconds left in overtime. He immediately frowned and grabbed his arm but stayed on the court to shoot two free throws, making one before leaving the game.

Afterward, he could use only his left arm to pull a shirt and sweater over his head as he dressed in the locker room.

We'll have more on this as it develops. In the interim, though, with Pau Gasol injured too, let's all make room for Lamar Odom, your 2009 Lakers' starting center! (Either that, or they'll go with DJ Mbenga, which is equally hilarious, because it's fun to stand and scream "MBENGA!")

----

Good news for Lakers fans is that it's above the waist, but still.... this guy seems to be prone to being hurt a lot.

1. Bynum's gotta man up and play through the pain if it's just a sprain.
2. mBenga will get starting center duties if neither Bynum or Pau or available.

Lakers will continue to be among the top teams in the NBA even with mBenga as a starting Center and Bynum/Pau out.

We had "Bad luck" last year and Bynum ended up making Howard tap out prematurely.

If Bynum wants to join the ranks of the NBA elite, he's gotta man up and play through pain. My guess is that he'll do it.

I was suprise he even hit a FT, Hayes wanted to break his elbow, Oden should take a lesson from this, Bynum made a Clutch FT, with bad arm

Well, I stepped in after Dallas beat down, but, it was total mayhem. You know, you guys acted like complete bozonuts. I never saw anything like it in my life. I was actually appalled. So, I went and watched an LMN Movie and mellowed out.

It'll be interesting to see Bynum and Blair fight for a rebound when the Lakers/Spurs play...another "short" forward getting tangled up with the long limbed Bynum...

Menga will match up well with Marc Gasol (Al's brother in-a-law).

Is Bynum going Oden on us now?

That was a good hard NBA foul, making sure he didn't make the shot. I'm sure he'll be fine.

And so many of you called Manu fragile. If Manu is fragile, the Bynum's alter ego is this guy:

Chuck Hayes is as strong as hell. His lower strength is insane; even heavy hitters like Oden and Garnett can't even move him. His hands are also incredibly good; he can catch and pass. He can poke and strip balls like no other.

He'll fuck you up defensively. [Sadly, Hayes can't create worth shit for himself, I face palmed when he tried to create his shot last night, this happened once]

I agree with other posters, Bynum is realising his potential but he really needs to grow some balls and man the fuck up.

Bynum's ankles are going to collapse by simply walking. I mean that dude is fragile and about the Kareem comparison, you can't be serious about that

The comparison was not about stats or numbers. We heard for over a decade how soft Kareem was as we won title after title. Not everyone is a bruiser and Kareem proved you can play a soft finesse game and excel in the league.

Simple as that...
